Emptiness & Suffering -A Study of the Cycle of Dependent Arising
A weekend of meditation and dhamma study with Shaila Catherine

Saturday, February 19 - Monday, February 21, 2011
9:30 am - 5:00 pm

THIS WEEKEND PROGRAM is an in-depth exploration of the causal formations that construct identity and perpetuate suffering. We will study the traditional twelve-fold model of dependent arising through intellectual, reflective, and experiential processes. This brilliant model, fundamental to the Buddha’s teachings, highlights how patterns of ignorance, craving, and basic psycho-physical processes condition our lives. The program will include contemporary readings, sutta study, dhamma talks, and discussion blended with experiential reflections and guided-meditations to expose the causal relationships that produce suffering and enhance the power of liberating knowledge.

COST: $100 fee covers basic operational expenses. Voluntary donations/dana offerings to support the teacher are encouraged.

DANA: In an effort to embrace these teachings in the spirit of generosity, no specific charge for the teacher is included in the basic course fees. A basket will be available for practicing generosity by offering voluntary donations (dana) to support the teacher and her ongoing efforts of serving the dhamma.

TO REGISTER: Send $100 payable to Bodhi-Retreats. Include your name, e-mail, phone, and postal address.

Buddhist Lists, a 6-week Speaker Series
with Shaila Catherine and Guest Speakers

Tuesday, September 14, 2010
7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

The Buddha's teachings are contained in the Pali Canon which consists of three sections: the Suttas (the Discourses), the Vinaya (the rules of the monks and nuns), and the Abhidhamma (the philosophy and psychology of the teachings). The Pali Canon comprises about 20,000 pages of text. Eliminating the stories, biographies and histories, one is left with a large number of lists, over 600 of them, and explanations about the lists. Knowledge of the most important lists and their use in personal practice can assist us in reaching full Awakening. This Speaker series is offered as a tool to attaining that end.

Shaila Catherine will guide the series, with special guest teachers.
August 10 Noa Ronkin Buddhist Lists, Memorization, and Mindfulness
August 17 Margaret Gainer 7 Factors of Enlightenment
August 24 James Kempf 4 Noble Truths
August 31 Shaila Catherine 5 Hindrances
September 7 Shaila Catherine Right Efforts
September 14 Shaila Catherine 5 Precepts

Noa Ronkin received her Ph.D. in Buddhist Studies in 2003 from the University of Oxford and her B.A. and M.A. in Philosophy from Tel Aviv University. Her research interests include a range of issues associated with Theravada Buddhist philosophy and psychology, and comparative Western and Indian philosophy. She is the author of Early Buddhist Metaphysics: The Making of a Philosophical Tradition (Routledge-Curzon, 2005) and several articles on the Abhidhamma tradition. Since 2003, Noa has been affiliated with Stanford University in a number of research, teaching, and administrative positions. She is currently a Research Fellow at the Ho Center for Buddhist Studies at Stanford.

Margaret Gainer began Buddhist meditation practice in 1995. She practices with San Jose Insight Meditation and teaches at several Bay area meditation groups. Margaret completed Sati Center Buddhist Chaplaincy Training. Since 2005 she has taught a weekly meditation class for women inmates at Elmwood Correctional Facility in Milpitas. Margaret is a member of First Congregational Church of San Jose and brings Buddhist teachings and understanding into the life of the church.

James Kempf began his study and practice of Buddhism with a meditation course in 1972 at Wesleyan University. He ordained as a Zen priest (tokudo) with Yvonne Rand, a Zen teacher in the Suzuki Roshi lineage and cofounder of Zen Center in San Francisco. James' study combined Zen forms with basic mindfulness meditation and included a six week retreat at Insight Meditation Society in Barre in the fall of 1996. In 2002, James relinquished his tokudo vows, continuing his practice primarily with vipassana meditation. In recent years he sat three month-long retreats at Spirit Rock, dedicated a half year to daily metta practice, and has begun the study of concentration practice with Shaila Catherine.

Shaila Catherine has been practicing meditation since 1980, with seven years of accumulated silent retreat experience. Shaila studied at the Sharpham College for Buddhist Studies in England and dedicated several years (1990-1996) to studying with masters in India, Nepal and Thailand.  She has trained with such luminaries as H. W. L. Poonja, Buddhadasa Bhikkhu, Nyoshul Khen Rinpoche, Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche, and PaAuk Sayadaw. Shaila's current focus is the development of concentration and the deep states of absorption called jhana. She completed a one-year intensive meditation retreat focused on jhana as the basis for insight (2003-2004) at Insight Meditation Society in Massachusetts. Shaila founded Insight Meditation South Bay in California in 2006 to bring a continuity of Dhamma teachings to the south and west bay region. She is the author of the book Focused and Fearless: A Meditator’s Guide to States of Deep Joy, Calm, and Clarity from Wisdom Publications.

LOVING-KINDNESS (Metta) is a profound quality of friendliness toward all of life. In this course we will cultivate Loving-kindness through the use of guided meditations, structured reflections, and work directly with anything that seems to obstruct the natural flow of our good will. This ancient systematic practice called metta meditation cultivates a heartful wish that all beings be happy, beginning with ourselves and gradually expanding the field of loving-kindness to embrace those we love, and those who are difficult to love, until this caring radiates to all beings without exception. Loving-kindness is a wonderful practice that heals the heart, meets the pains of life with sensitivity, and strengthens inner serenity that is essential for concentration. This course is offered as a six week series, with progressive lessons and sequential instruction.

Shaila Catherine will guide the series, with special guest teachers, DREW OMAN and SHARON ALLEN on September 30, and ANGIE BOISSEVAIN on October 14.

Shaila Catherine has been practicing meditation since 1980, with seven years of accumulated silent retreat experience. She has taught since 1996 in the USA, India, Israel, England, and New Zealand. Shaila has dedicated several years to studying with masters in India, Nepal and Thailand, completed a one year intensive meditation retreat with the focus on concentration and jhana, and authored Focused and Fearless: A Meditator’s Guide to States of Deep Joy, Calm and Clarity, (Wisdom Publications,2008). She has extensive experience with the practice of metta, including 7 months exploring metta as the meditation subject in retreats. Shaila Catherine is the founder of Insight Meditation South Bay, The Buddhist Meditation Center Of Silicon Valley.

Sharon Allen is a long time practitioner and teacher of mindfulness meditation and movement. Sharon has a degree in Human Development, is Certified in Transpersonal Studies from the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology, and trained with Jon Kabat-Zinn in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, which she taught at Kaiser for fourteen years. Sharon leads several meditation groups that explore spiritual growth through meditation and inquiry. Sharon encourages the practical applications of mindfulness in dealing with life's ever-changing events. Sharon's web site is BeMindfulNow.com

Drew Oman began his involvement with Buddhism in the early 70s when he took a course in Buddhist Scriptures from Walpola Rahula (What the Buddha Taught) at Northwestern University, where Drew obtained a BA in psychology. His spiritual journey led him through years of rich study and practice with the Quakers, Self-Realization Fellowship, and while following Eknath Easwaran here in the Bay Area, an immersion in the Christian mystics. Drew returned to Buddhism, specifically to Vipassana practice, in the early 90s, and has established a consistent meditation practice, is an active member of IMSB, studies Buddhist scripture, and engages in retreat practice. Drew teaches English as a Second Language at De Anza College in Cupertino.

Angie Boissevain is a transmitted disciple of Zen master, Kobun Chino Otogawa, and completed transmission with Vanja Palmers. She has been teaching in the San Francisco Bay Area for 30 years. She was one of the founders, with Kobun roshi, of Jikoji, a Zen temple and retreat center in the Santa Cruz mountains, and now is teacher for Floating Zendo, which meets in San Jose, California. Since the passing of Maylie Scott, roshi, she has led retreats with the AZG sangha several times a year. Her travel schedule also takes her to retreats in Taos, Boulder, Austria and Switzerland. She has 3 sons and is a published poet.

No registration required, however the intention to attend the entire series is strongly encouraged as the instructions are cumulative and offered sequentially.

Book Signing Event with Toni Bernhard
How to Be Sick: A Buddhist-Inspired Guide for the Chronically Ill and their Caregivers

Tuesday, November 16, 2010
7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Book Signing Event

How to Be Sick: A Buddhist-Inspired Guide for the Chronically Ill and their Caregivers by Toni Bernhard

Toni Bernhard fell ill on a trip to Paris in 2001 with what doctors initially diagnosed as an acute viral infection. She has not recovered. In 1982, she’d received a J.D. from the School of Law at the University of California, Davis, and immediately joined the faculty where she stayed until chronic illness forced her to retire. During her 22 years on the faculty, she served for six years as Dean of Students. In 1992, she began to study and practice Buddhism. Before becoming ill, she attended many meditation retreats and led a meditation group in Davis with her husband.

Book Description: Drawing from the wisdom of the Buddha and from the author’s personal experience, How To Be Sick offers easy-to-learn tools and practices for living skillfully, maintaining equanimity, and finding joy in the midst of chronic illness or any life-disrupting circumstance. The book is intended for sufferers and for their caregivers (the latter includes people involved in hospice, chaplaincy, and elder care); for those interested in chronic illnesses and conditions (health professionals, family and friends); and for people interested in Buddhism (illness can function as a metaphor for suffering which, along with the cessation of suffering, is at the heart of the Buddha’s teaching). A recurring theme in the book is that, although one’s body may be sick, one’s mind can be at peace. Website: www.howtobesick.com

Toni Bernhard's inspiring work, How To Be Sick, illuminates a pathway through the travails of life-altering illness. Inspired by her Buddhist practice, she chronicles her own discoveries of the path that leads to the end of suffering even in the midst of chronic disease. This book is a heavenly messenger, reminding us of our own vulnerabilities and the transformation of heart and mind made possible through them.
- Joseph Goldstein, author of A Heart Full of Peace and One Dharma: The Emerging Western Buddhism
