Please write out the list of the 8 fold path factors and set to memory in the correct order. Extra credit is to identify the sublist defining each factor.
Apply the factors of the eight fold path to one particular action in order to cultivate a positive change in that factor. For instance, when working with false speech, consider your initial view and intention in relation to false speech. Notice how speech is affected by effort, concentration and mindfulness. Notice how right speech is supported by right livelihood and right action.
Observe the interrelationships of the 8 factors - they are practiced together.
Each day this month take note of events that mark birth, age, sickness, painful consequences of action, and death. Upon witnessing each event, consciously reflect that you too are subject to these things. You might say out loud the sentence: “This body to is subject to aging/illness/death etc. I can not escape aging/illness/death.”
Or work with the reflective phrase when you meet beings: “You are my friend who shares birth, aging, sickness, and death.”
Memorize this verse. We will recite it together in class.
Notice during this month when you ‘revive the past’, become lost in plans for the future, or are removed from a mindful connection with presently arisen states. What is the frequency and quality of present moment awareness in your daily life?
This is a profound discourse, but I am not sure what to suggest for homework - so simply enjoy it!
