Forgiveness is not about condoning or ignoring unskillful actions or speech but re-awakening our capacity as communities and individuals to reside in understanding and love. We will explore the obstacles to unburdening our hearts of defensiveness, blame and judgement and the path of return to metta (friendship).

This day will include guided meditations, movement, and dharma talk and dialogue.

Arinna Weisman has studied insight meditation since 1979 and has been teaching since 1989. Her root teacher is Ruth Denison who was empowered by the great teacher U Bha Khin. She has also studied with Thich Nhat Hanh in the Zen tradition and Punjaji in the Advaita tradition. She is the founding teacher of Dhamma Dena Meditation Center (now Insight Meditation Center of the Pioneer Valley/Dhamma Dena) and is co-author of the book, A Beginner's Guide to Insight Meditation. She has spent the last two years living in different monasteries exploring ordination.

Aspiration, determination and resolve are essential qualities that bring unshakeablility on the path of awakening and complete resolve upon the development of wholesome qualities. These qualities include non-deception in speech, non-vacilliation in the face of obstructions, and unwavering dedication to one's word and committements. As our aspiriations for awakening, full awareness, love and compassion develop, the perfection of determined resolve strengthens our progress of realization.

In this Saturday program we will explore the supportive role of determined resolve and aspiration. There will be sitting and walking meditations throughout the day, an optional QiGong session at 10:30, optional individual consultations/interviews with Shaila, and a dharma talk on determination/resolve as a liberating practice in the afternoon.

Kim Allen studies and practices qi gong with teachers in the Bay Area and Seattle. Qi gong has a 3,000-year history in China, and is the root practice of both Chinese medicine and most martial arts. Kim explores how qi gong can provide foundational support for vipassana meditation by deepening awareness of the body, and for daily-life practice by encouraging relaxation and calmness during movement.

Wisdom has the characteristic of penetrating the real specific nature of phenomena; its function is to illuminate the objective field, like a lamp so that we see the causes of suffering clearly and free ourselves from the tangle of ignorance. Wisdom is likened to a guide in a forest, who knows the way, and unconfused leads us to safety. Wisdom is the chief cause for the practice of the other perfections. Without wisdom we forget to practice generosity and virtue, develop concentration, and manifest compassion. Through wisdom we understand the suffering of others; through compassion we strive to alleviate their suffering.

In this Saturday program we will explore the supportive role of wisdom in our meditation practice. There will be sitting and walking meditations throughout the day, an optional Yin Yoga session at 10:30, optional individual consultations/interviews with Shaila, and a dharma talk on wisdom as a liberating practice in the afternoon.

Renate Kempf has been a bodyworker for seven years and is certified at the 1000 hour level with a focus on Structural Integration. Renate has practiced yoga for over twenty years and completed yin yoga certification with Paul Grilley and Sarah Powers. See www.azureheart.com for more information about Renate's work.

The Shorter Discourse on Emptiness (MN 121) describes an approach to vipassana that mindfully integrates calmness and seeing clearly. Through gradual descents into emptiness, the practitioner begins to intuit the ultimate emptiness: everything is empty of lasting selfhood and inherent existence. The more this is realized, the more we let go of "me" and "mine." We will consider the implications of this overlooked practice, along with other emptiness teachings. Guided meditation exercises will foster an experiential approach to these powerful, original teachings.  Participants should read the discourse before attending.

Santikaro is the founder of Liberation Park, a modern American expression of Buddhist practice, study, and social responsibility located in rural southwestern Wisconsin. He lives there with his wife Jo Marie, various flora and fauna, and visiting friends, and continues to teach, explore nature, and translate the work of his teacher. Previously, he lived and trained as a monk at Suan Mokkh (Garden of Liberation) with Buddhadasa Bhikkhu, a leading Thai teacher and reformer of Theravada Buddhism. Ajahn Buddhadasa contributed enormously to fresh understandings of the liberating teachings of the Buddha that included intimacy with nature, the development of engaged buddhism, and a return to the original teachings of the Pali Canon with profound emphasis on the teachings of conditionality, emptiness, and mindfulness with breathing. These movements within Buddhism, initiated and nurtured by Ajahn Buddhadasa were unconventional in their time, and through the translations of Santikaro among others, came to influence our Western understanding of Buddhism. Santikaro returned to the Midwest in 2001 and retired from monastic life in 2004. Web sites: www.liberationpark.org and www.suanmokkh.org
