SUMMARY:ONLINE SUTTA STUDY RETREAT: Living Without Enemies
DESCRIPTION:Living Without Enemies\nA Weekend ONLINE AT-HOME Sutta Study Retreat\nwith Shaila Catherine \nJune 28 – 30\, 2024 \nThe Buddha said\, “The world may quarrel with me\, but I do not quarrel with the world.” How can we live our lives without hate—without making anyone into an enemy? \nThis program will use both sutta study and meditation practice to explore the Buddha’s teachings on anger. We will examine how untrained minds meet unpleasant experiences with irritation\, blame\, prejudice\, and hatred; and how trained minds abide at ease in the face of difficulties. The Discourses of the Buddha offer us empowering stories\, similies\, instructions\, and teachings that can help us understand and overcome our own aversive tendencies. Through meditative development we learn to meet pain\, disagreement\, and even abuse\, with a balanced\, kind\, and wise attention; we free the mind from the underlying tendency to hate. \nPlease join us as we deepen our practice together through a program of live video conferences with Shaila Catherine. The online meetings will include guided meditations\, Dharma talks\, and question and answer sessions. \nRegistration is required. Scroll down to choose a ticket level. Registration may close a few days prior to the retreat\, so don’t wait to the last minute! \nMore information and a link to join the zoom video conferences will be emailed to registrants a few days prior to the retreat. \nThis retreat is appropriate for all levels of meditators—beginning\, intermediate\, and experienced practitioners. \n\nRETREAT SCHEDULE (Times are given in Pacific Time\, San Francisco) \n\n\nFriday\n4:30 – 6:00 PM– Opening Session – Guided Meditation and Dhamma Talk \n\n\nSaturday\n8:00 – 8:45 AM – Morning Meditation\n11:00 – 1:00 AM – Session One\n3:00 – 5:00 PM – Session Two \n\n\nSunday\n8:00 – 8:45 AM – Morning Meditation\n11:00 – 1:00 AM – Session One\n3:00 – 5:00 PM – Session Two \n\n\nRETREAT SCHEDULE (Times are given in Eastern Time\, Boston) \n\n\nFriday\n7:30 – 9:00 PM – Opening Session – Guided Meditation and Dhamma Talk \n\n\nSaturday\n11:00 – 11:45 AM – Morning Meditation\n2:00 – 4:00 PM – Session One\n6:00 – 8:00 PM – Session Two \n\n\nSunday\n11:00 – 11:45 AM – Morning Meditation\n2:00 – 4:00 PM – Session One\n6:00 – 8:00 PM – Session Two \n\nVisit our Founding Teacher page for biography and photograph of the teacher. \nQuestions?: For more information contact sit \nCo-sponsored by Bodhi-Retreats and Insight Meditation South Bay \n\nRegistration: Registration is required for this course. SUMMARY:Transformative Teachings | Online Sutta Study Course | Shaila Catherine & Kim Allen
DESCRIPTION:Registration has closed.\nTransformative Teachings\nAn Online IMSB Dhamma Study Course with Shaila Catherine and Kim Allen\nSix Monday Evenings from February 27 – July 24\, 2023 | 5:30 – 7:00 PM Pacific Time\n\nFeb 27\nMarch 20\nApril 24\nMay 29\nJune 26\nJuly 24\n\nBuddhist teachings contain many inspiring stories of ordinary people whose lives were transformed when they encountered the Dharma. For people who met the Buddha more than two millennia ago as well as for contemporary meditators\, Dharma teachings can spark life-altering reflections\, open the mind to new possibilities\, ignite creative insights\, affirm profound understandings\, and expand one’s potential in life. \nThis 6-session online course explores a variety of transformative teachings through the extraordinary stories of select disciples of the Buddha. As we learn about the historic impact that dharma teachings have had on the lives of the early disciples\, we will explore how these teachings guide our practice today. We will observe the vital role that mindfulness and concentration play on a liberating path; recognize the courage needed to overcome obstacles; reflect on the inevitability of death; contemplate impermanence in all perceptions; cultivate wise attention to the body; practice letting go; clarify what matters most; and nourish compassion\, generosity\, and community connections. \nThe course will loosely follow the book Daughters of the Buddha by Bhikkhu Anālayo. We will explore various themes referred to in the book and follow tangents for discussion with additional readings and practices drawn from the suttas. The course will include teachings\, group discussions\, meditation\, and suggested practices. \nPlease purchase the book\, Daughters of the Buddha\, and read pages 1–33 prior to the first session. \nRegister now by selecting a ticket below to join us in delving into the teachings that may transform your life!\nCo-sponsored by Insight Meditation South Bay & Bodhi Retreats \n\nVISIT our Teacher Page for teacher biographies and photographs. \nWHO SHOULD JOIN: This course is open to anyone\, however\, since emphasis will be on the discourses of the Buddha rather than meditation\, participants should already have some mindfulness meditation experience. \nCOURSE LEVELS: It is designed as a level 2–3 course. Click this link for a key to course level designations. \nVIDEO CONFERENCES: We will use the Zoom video conference platform. Zoom is easy to access via computer or phone. More information and the zoom link will be provided in the confirmation materials after registering. This is a discussion oriented course\, and we not guarantee that there will be recordings for all the sessions. Please register only if you expect to be able to attend at least half the program. \n\nREGISTRATION:
Registration is required for this course. Registration fees are non-refundable. To register select an option under the Tickets heading at the bottom of this page. \nThe sliding scale fee range is from $590 to $190 and will be shared between IMSB and the teacher(s). The lower end of the sliding scale is intended for those with limited means. The base rate of $190 is estimated to cover basic administrative costs. The base rate does not factor in compensation for teachers or ongoing administrative expenses for IMSB. By choosing to give at the mid to high range of the sliding scale your generosity supports those with limited income to attend our programs\, and it supports IMSB and the teachers. We encourage you to choose the highest level that is appropriate for your economic situation. If you need additional scholarship assistance to attend\, we offer a 30% or 50% discount for those with financial need. To use the scholarship rates\, use one of these coupon codes during the registration process: less30%\, or halftherate. \nTICKETING TIP: You may purchase series tickets on any day of the series. When you purchase a ticket you are registering for the entire class series. So you only need to register once. \nTAX DEDUCTIBILITY:
The base registration fee is not tax deductible and non-refundable. Donations above the base rate will be considered voluntary tax deductible contributions. Each January the IMSB treasurer sends donors letters that acknowledge the accumulated deductible donations from the previous year. This annual letter will acknowledge the amount given that is above the base rate and serve as documentation for tax deduction purposes. \nCANCELLATION POLICY:
All fees and payments are non-refundable. If it becomes necessary to cancel participation in a course\, and the registrar is notified prior to the start of the first class meeting\, your registration fee will be converted into a voucher creditable towards the fee for a future IMSB course or event.
Vouchers must be used within one year of the initial course start date\, and may be transferred to only one future course. Cancellations that occur after the start of the first class are not eligible for the voucher credit.

SUMMARY:ONLINE COURSE: Intro to Sutta Study & Famous Similes
DESCRIPTION:Due to the coronavirus concerns\, we have converted our Thursday evening course into an online format starting May 21. Register Now! Scroll for tickets below.  \nLearning Through Examples: Images\, Illustrations\, and Similes in the Discourses of the Buddha\nAn ONLINE 6-week Introduction to Sutta Study with Shaila Catherine and Sharon Allen \nThursdays\, May 21 – June 25\, 2020\n5:30 pm to 7:30 pm (Pacific Time) \nThe Buddha’s teachings are peppered with images of mountains\, rivers\, oceans\, sun and moon\, lions\, jackals\, turtles\, quail\, fire\, archery\, craftsmanship\, gates\, bubbles\, mirages\, magic tricks\, ripening fruit\, purifying gold\, incubating eggs\, blind men\, sumptuous meals\, stumps\, creeping vines\, etched lines\, childhood games\, and more. What makes these images so effective? What can we learn from them today? \nThe Buddha’s teaching skill shines through the wide range of illustrations he used to convey subtle points of instruction. Ordinary people could comprehend deep topics because his examples related to ordinary aspects of daily living. Farmers would relate to the images of sowing seeds and yoking oxen to the plough; warriors would understand his stories of training horses and driving chariots. Today\, these striking similes continue to give us a vivid sense of the profound path taught by the Buddha. \nThis course will serve as an introduction to sutta study by presenting and discussing several traditional similes that illustrate important aspects of Buddhist practice.\n\nMay 21. Similes on Hindrances (AN 5:193 and MN 39.12)\nMay 28. Similes on Balanced Effort (AN 6:55 and MN 19)\nJune 4. Similes on Decision Making and Feeling (MN 46.18 and MN 45.4)\nJune 11. Similes on Views and Speculation (MN 63.5 and Udana 6.4-5)\nJune 18. Similes for Spiritual Urgency and Death Reflections (AN 6:60 and AN 7:74)\nJune 25. Similes for Calming and Concentrating the Mind (AN 3:101 and AN 3:102)\n\nWHO SHOULD JOIN: This course is open to anyone\, however\, since emphasis will be on the discourses of the Buddha rather than meditation\, participants should already have some mindfulness meditation experience. \nCOURSE LEVELS: It is designed as a level 2 course. Click this link for a key to course level designations. \nVIDEO CONFERENCES: We will use the Zoom video conference platform. Zoom is easy to access via computer or phone. More information will be provided in the confirmation materials after registering. \n\nVisit our Teacher Page for teacher biographies and photographs. \nREGISTRATION: Registration is required for this course. Registration fees are non-refundable. To register\, select an option under the Tickets heading at the bottom of this page. (If you are viewing this page more than two months in advance of the course\, the Tickets heading might not yet appear\, so please check again later.) To register for a course\, you purchase one ticket\, which registers you for the entire class series. You only need to register once; you do not need to register separately for each class session. \nCourse Fee: The sliding scale fee range is from $390 to $130 and will be shared between IMSB and the teacher(s). The lower end of the sliding scale is intended for those with limited financial means. The low rate of $130 is estimated to cover the most basic costs for the specific class period. This base rate does not factor in compensation for teachers or ongoing administrative expenses for IMSB. If you pay at the mid to high range of the sliding scale\, your generosity supports those with limited income in attending our programs and also supports IMSB and the teachers\, enabling the dhamma to thrive in the South Bay area. We encourage you to choose the highest level that is appropriate for your economic situation. \nScholarship Assistance: A scholarship rate of $75 is offered for those with very limited financial means. If you need additional assistance\, or if you would like to volunteer to help out\, please inquire with the registrar by contacting ThursdayClass. \nTax Deductions: The basic registration fee is not tax deductible. Donations above the base rate will be considered voluntary contributions and are deductible for any amount that is over the base rate. Each January\, the IMSB treasurer sends donors letters that acknowledge the amount given for the previous year that is above the basic rate; this serves as documentation for tax deduction purposes. \nCancellation Policy: All fees and payments are non-refundable. If it becomes necessary to cancel participation in a course\, and the registrar is notified prior to the start of the first class meeting\, your registration fee will be converted into a voucher creditable towards the fee for a future IMSB Thursday class. Vouchers must be used within one year of the initial course start date\, and may be transferred to only one future course. Cancellations that occur after the start of the first class are not eligible for the voucher credit.

To register for a course\, you purchase one ticket\, which registers you for the entire class series.
