SUMMARY:Tuesday Online: Ayya Anandabodhi & Matty Weingast: Poems Inspired by the Early Buddhist Nuns
DESCRIPTION:Ayya Anandabodhi and Matty Weingast will be reading from The First Free Women: Poems of the Early Buddhist Nuns. The evening will begin with a brief reading and guided meditation. Then there will be a period of open discussion interspersed with more readings and Q&A. We invite you to come and hear these poems\, inspired by the voices of the awakened nuns. Everyone is welcome\, whether you have a deep familiarity with the Therigatha or want nothing at all to do with poetry. \n  \nTakes place on Zoom! \nJoin the Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/88266320362?pwd=QWZpb2svQk9xZCtvWTZraXF5WTFKZz09 \nMeeting ID: 882 6632 0362\nPassword: metta4all \nOne tap mobile\n+16699006833\,\,88266320362# US (San Jose)\n+12532158782\,\,88266320362# US (Tacoma) \nDial by your location\n+1 669 900 6833 US (San Jose)\n+1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma)\n+1 346 248 7799 US (Houston)\n+1 929 205 6099 US (New York)\n+1 301 715 8592 US (Germantown)\n+1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago)\nMeeting ID: 882 6632 0362\nFind your local number: https://us02web.zoom.us/u/kcSiCSJ1bl \nMore about the book\nThe Therigatha (“Verses of the Elder Nuns”) is the oldest collection of known writings from Buddhist women and the earliest collections of women’s literature. Composed around the time of the Buddha\, the collection contains verses by the first Buddhist nuns detailing everything from their disenchantment with their prescribed roles in society to their struggles on the path to enlightenment to their spiritual realizations. Among the nuns\, a range of voices are represented\, including former wives\, women who lost children\, women who gave up their wealth\, and a former prostitute. \nIn this poetic re-envisioning of each poem\, Weingast infuses each verse with vivid language that is not found in other translations. Simple yet profound\, the nuance of language highlights the beauty in each poem and resonates with modern readers exploring the struggles\, grief\, failures\, doubts\, and ultimately\, moments of profound insight of each woman. Weingast breathes fresh life into this ancient collection of poetry\, offering readers a rare glimpse of Buddhism inspired by the spiritual literature and poetry of the first female disciples of the Buddha. \n“A must-read for all women and those who love them. This inspiringly poetic translation of timeless wisdom reminds us of our freedom and how we can live free together.” —Ruth King \n“Honest. Courageous. Inspiring. These reflections can’t help but touch the hearts of all who read them.” —Sharon Salzberg \n“These are fresh\, powerful\, poetic translations that bring our ancient wise women to life. Let their beautiful songs of freedom inspire your own heart.” —Jack Kornfield \n  \n\n  \nEveryone is welcome. No registration. Donations are appreciated. \nPlease visit our Teachers Page for biographies and photos of our speakers. \nInsight Meditation South Bay offers two weekly meditation programs. On Tuesdays\, we meet in Mountain View for our drop-in weekly program of meditation and teachings.  On Thursdays\, we meet in Saratoga for our Dhamma Classroom\, which offer a series of structured courses with registration\, and periodic drop-in practice events. \nOur Tuesday evening program usually includes a sitting meditation and Dhamma talk. The principal teacher is Shaila Catherine and guest speakers are featured regularly. Thematic series are periodically presented\, but whether or not a topic has been advertised in advance\, Shaila or a guest teacher will lead the sitting and offer teachings. See also weekly sitting. \nNewcomers are always welcome. To help newcomers get acquainted with mindfulness meditation and IMSB\, a senior member or teacher offers a beginner’s orientation beginning at 6:30 on the first Tuesday of each month. \nIMSB relies upon the generosity of participants to support our teachers and cover organizational expenses. Dana is a word in the ancient Pali language that describes donations\, offerings and generosity. Two bowls will be available at an event to practice dana for the teacher and IMSB. We encourage you to give joyfully and generously\, according to your resources and means. IMSB is a 501(c) (3) organization. All donations are tax deductible as permitted by law.

SUMMARY:ONLINE COURSE: Intro to Sutta Study & Famous Similes
DESCRIPTION:Due to the coronavirus concerns\, we have converted our Thursday evening course into an online format starting May 21. Register Now! Scroll for tickets below.  \nLearning Through Examples: Images\, Illustrations\, and Similes in the Discourses of the Buddha\nAn ONLINE 6-week Introduction to Sutta Study with Shaila Catherine and Sharon Allen \nThursdays\, May 21 – June 25\, 2020\n5:30 pm to 7:30 pm (Pacific Time) \nThe Buddha’s teachings are peppered with images of mountains\, rivers\, oceans\, sun and moon\, lions\, jackals\, turtles\, quail\, fire\, archery\, craftsmanship\, gates\, bubbles\, mirages\, magic tricks\, ripening fruit\, purifying gold\, incubating eggs\, blind men\, sumptuous meals\, stumps\, creeping vines\, etched lines\, childhood games\, and more. What makes these images so effective? What can we learn from them today? \nThe Buddha’s teaching skill shines through the wide range of illustrations he used to convey subtle points of instruction. Ordinary people could comprehend deep topics because his examples related to ordinary aspects of daily living. Farmers would relate to the images of sowing seeds and yoking oxen to the plough; warriors would understand his stories of training horses and driving chariots. Today\, these striking similes continue to give us a vivid sense of the profound path taught by the Buddha. \nThis course will serve as an introduction to sutta study by presenting and discussing several traditional similes that illustrate important aspects of Buddhist practice.\n\nMay 21. Similes on Hindrances (AN 5:193 and MN 39.12)\nMay 28. Similes on Balanced Effort (AN 6:55 and MN 19)\nJune 4. Similes on Decision Making and Feeling (MN 46.18 and MN 45.4)\nJune 11. Similes on Views and Speculation (MN 63.5 and Udana 6.4-5)\nJune 18. Similes for Spiritual Urgency and Death Reflections (AN 6:60 and AN 7:74)\nJune 25. Similes for Calming and Concentrating the Mind (AN 3:101 and AN 3:102)\n\nWHO SHOULD JOIN: This course is open to anyone\, however\, since emphasis will be on the discourses of the Buddha rather than meditation\, participants should already have some mindfulness meditation experience. \nCOURSE LEVELS: It is designed as a level 2 course. Click this link for a key to course level designations. \nVIDEO CONFERENCES: We will use the Zoom video conference platform. Zoom is easy to access via computer or phone. More information will be provided in the confirmation materials after registering. \n\nVisit our Teacher Page for teacher biographies and photographs. \nREGISTRATION: Registration is required for this course. Registration fees are non-refundable. To register\, select an option under the Tickets heading at the bottom of this page. (If you are viewing this page more than two months in advance of the course\, the Tickets heading might not yet appear\, so please check again later.) To register for a course\, you purchase one ticket\, which registers you for the entire class series. You only need to register once; you do not need to register separately for each class session. \nCourse Fee: The sliding scale fee range is from $390 to $130 and will be shared between IMSB and the teacher(s). The lower end of the sliding scale is intended for those with limited financial means. The low rate of $130 is estimated to cover the most basic costs for the specific class period. This base rate does not factor in compensation for teachers or ongoing administrative expenses for IMSB. If you pay at the mid to high range of the sliding scale\, your generosity supports those with limited income in attending our programs and also supports IMSB and the teachers\, enabling the dhamma to thrive in the South Bay area. We encourage you to choose the highest level that is appropriate for your economic situation. \nScholarship Assistance: A scholarship rate of $75 is offered for those with very limited financial means. If you need additional assistance\, or if you would like to volunteer to help out\, please inquire with the registrar by contacting ThursdayClass. \nTax Deductions: The basic registration fee is not tax deductible. Donations above the base rate will be considered voluntary contributions and are deductible for any amount that is over the base rate. Each January\, the IMSB treasurer sends donors letters that acknowledge the amount given for the previous year that is above the basic rate; this serves as documentation for tax deduction purposes. \nCancellation Policy: All fees and payments are non-refundable. If it becomes necessary to cancel participation in a course\, and the registrar is notified prior to the start of the first class meeting\, your registration fee will be converted into a voucher creditable towards the fee for a future IMSB Thursday class. Vouchers must be used within one year of the initial course start date\, and may be transferred to only one future course. Cancellations that occur after the start of the first class are not eligible for the voucher credit.
