SUMMARY:Retreat in Georgia | Concentration\, Metta\, and the Jhana Factors
DESCRIPTION:Cultivating Concentration\, Mettā\, and the Jhana Factors\nA 10-day meditation retreat with Shaila Catherine\nOctober 8 – 18\, 2025\nat Calvin Center\, 13550 Woolsey Road\, Hampton\, GA 30228\n(near Atlanta\, GA)\n \nThe retreat begins with registration from 2:30 – 4:00 pm on Oct 8. The retreat ends around noon\, before lunch on Oct 18. \nPartial attendance may be possible\, but it must begin on the first day of the retreat and priority will be given to those registering for the full retreat. \nThis ten-day residential retreat will provide instructions in loving-kindness (metta) to cultivate concentration. The instructions will emphasize developing five factors that intensify focused attention and characterize the blissful states of meditative absorption known as jhana. \nThe five factors are applied attention\, sustained attention\, joy\, happiness\, and one-pointedness of mind. Although these are called the Five Jhana Factors\, they are not exclusive to jhana states. The teachings on this retreat will provide practical instructions for developing and balancing these factors while cultivating loving kindness; distinguishing between the jhana factors and the states of jhana absorption; and examining the powerful role that concentration plays on the path of awakening. \nDaily group instructions will emphasize loving-kindness (metta)\, however\, some students may practice mindfulness with breathing or satipatthana practices if they prefer and have recently attended a retreat with Shaila on those techniques. Group and one-to-one guidance will tailor the practices to meet the needs and interests of individual students. \nThis silent retreat is structured with alternating periods of sitting and walking meditation\, dhamma teachings\, and teacher consultations. It will provide an ideal occasion for nurturing serenity and calmness\, and introducing the basic conditions that support jhana practice. No previous jhana experience is required\, however\, this retreat is intended for meditators who already have an established mindfulness based practice\, and have previously attended at least one multi-day silent residential retreat. \nSITE FEATURES: This retreat will be held at the Calvin Center in Georgia. It is a lovely and quiet retreat center in the country side that boasts a small lake and opportunities for canoeing when weather permits. It is conveniently situated about 45-minutes from Atlanta’s airport. You will enjoy the benefits of natural beauty\, a spacious meditation hall\, comfortable accommodations\, delicious meals\, access to walking trails\, and the chance for mindful canoeing. \nCOVID PRECAUTIONS: Participants are asked to help us prevent illness from entering the retreat or spreading if symptoms occur during the retreat. Please read our guidelines here\, and do not attend this retreat if you anticipate resisting our efforts to mitigate the risks of spreading illness. In a nutshell\, at this retreat participants are asked to not attend the retreat if they are ill\, bring self-test kits and masks to use in case symptoms arise\, communicate honestly with the teacher about health conditions\, and follow the instructions of the teacher or retreat staff.   \nRegister now! Space is limited. \nParticipants who are traveling from afar might need to check flight times carefully\, and if necessary arrange to stay in a hotel the night before the retreat. Early-arrival accommodations are not available at this retreat center\, and we must depart shortly after noon on the closing day. \nTO REGISTER: Please use the online form at the link below to submit your registration and waiver forms. \n\nRegistration Form: https://www.imsb.org/form-calvin2025/\n\nThis form will take approximately 20 minutes to fill out. Upon completion of the form you will receive an email with details for completing your payment. You have the option of paying the non-refundable deposit of $250 or the full retreat payment either by mailing a check to the registrar or by making a Zelle bank transfer. The address and account information for making this payment will be included in the registration confirmation email. \n\nDetails of our cancellation policy are on the registration form. \n\nThe retreat facility is somewhat handicapped accessible. Accommodations include comfortable hotel-style rooms with ensuite baths\, and dorm-style cabins and lodges. See the application form for accommodation details. \nCOST: 10 nights (includes accommodation and meals)\, plus a donation to the teachers at the end of retreat. \n\nFull retreat for single occupancy: 10 nights is $3\,200 – $2\,550 sliding scale (estimated actual cost for single is $2750)\nDouble occupancy sliding scale: $2700 – $2300 (estimated actual cost for double occupancy is $2500)\n\nFee covers only accommodations\, food\, and basic administrative expenses. There will be an opportunity at the end of the retreat to make a donation to the teacher. \nThe estimated actual per-person cost if we had used a fixed rate is $2750 for a single room\, and  $2500 for a shared room. By selecting an amount above the estimated actual cost\, your generosity supports those who need to select a lower rate to attend the retreat. Selecting an amount below the estimated actual cost is equivalent to receiving a partial scholarship. \nThe sliding scale will allow most scholarship needs to be self-managed. If you need additional scholarship support to attend\, consider applying for a scholarship through https://opendharmafoundation.org\, or contact our registrar for assistance through IMSB/Bodhi-Retreats. \nPARTIAL ATTENDANCE may be arranged for a stay of at least 3 nights\, but must begin on the first day of retreat\, and priority is given to full retreat participants. We strongly encourage attendance at the full retreat. Applicants for partial attendance will be placed on a wait list which will be reviewed approximately 2 months prior to the retreat. We cannot guarantee single rooms for partial attendees. You may contact the registrar to determine if single rooms for partial attendance are available approximately two months prior to the retreat. \nThe rates for partial attendance below are listed as single occupancy. The mid-point on each sliding scale is our estimated actual cost. Take 15% off any point on the sliding scale for double accommodations. \n\n3 nights (Tuesday–Friday) is $1275\n4 nights (Tuesday–Saturday) is $1\,600\n5 nights (Tuesday–Sunday) is $1925\n6 nights (Tuesday–Monday) is $2250\n7-9 nights is same as full retreat: single $3200 – $2550 sliding scale\n\nDANA: Compensation for the teacher is not included in the registration price. There will be an opportunity to offer donations to the teacher at the end of the retreat. \nRESEARCH ON MEDITATION: Shaila Catherine is working with a research team connected with McGill University (Jonas Mago\, Joshua Brahinsky\, Michael Lifshitz) to study how intensive meditation shapes the mind and body. Data was gathered at a 10-day retreat in Georgia in 2022\, and the findings from that study are in the final stages of analysis and write-up. We are now preparing a new study that will explore how a 10-day meditation retreat influences the neurophysiology\, experience\, and cognition of meditators. We are inviting all attendees of this retreat in October 2025  to participate—we need the participation of both novice and experienced practitioners to move forward with this research. Shaila and the research team are designing the data collection methods to protect your silence and minimize potential interference in the development of your meditation. More information and the option of opting in or opting out of the research study will be provided to registered retreat participants. \nQUESTIONS?: meditation1bodhicourses \nCo-Sponsored by Bodhi Retreats and Insight Meditation South Bay

SUMMARY:Retreat in California | Concentration & the Jhanas
DESCRIPTION:Cultivating Concentration\, Jhana Factors\, and Jhana States\na 10-night Meditation Retreat in California\nled by Shaila Catherine\nTuesday\, May 6\, 2025 – Friday\, May 16\, 2025 \nThis retreat will follow the approach to deepening concentration and attaining the absorption states of jhāna as described in Shaila Catherine’s first book\, Focused and Fearless\, recently republished under the new title\, The Jhanas. Instructions will use the breath as the primary meditation object and will encourage the development of meditative skills that lead to deep concentration (samādhi) and clear insight (vipassanā). Daily group instructions will guide participants to efficiently overcome hindrances\, cultivate the jhāna factors\, develop skill in the meditation object\, apply balanced effort\, and learn how to enter\, emerge\, and master the jhāna attainments. \nMeetings with the teacher in small groups and one-on-one dialogs will tailor the practices to meet the needs and interests of individual students. Participants who have previously attained the four jhānas on retreat with Shaila may further develop their samādhi with jhāna practices based on the body\, the kasinas\, and formless perceptions. \nThis retreat offers a special opportunity to train in concentration and jhāna practices with personal guidance from Shaila Catherine. It is one of the very few retreats each year in which Shaila systematically guides students to establish the four jhānas. See our Concentration and Jhana FAQ page for more information about developing concentration and the absorption states of jhana. \nThis silent retreat is structured with alternating periods of sitting and walking meditation\, dhamma teachings\, and teacher consultations. It is intended for meditators who are already familiar with mindfulness based practice\, and have previously attended at least one week long silent residential insight meditation retreat. \nPrior to the retreat\, please read the first half of The Jhanas by Shaila Catherine (previously published under the title Focused and Fearless). \nSITE FEATURES: This retreat will be held at Redwood Glen\, a lovely retreat center nestled in a redwood forest between La Honda and Pescadero. It’s about a 15-minute drive from Pescadero State Beach\, and about a 1-hour drive from either the San Francisco Airport or the San Jose Airport. This retreat center is convenient to reach\, and yet offers a secluded and intimate environment for deep meditation practice. You will enjoy the benefits of natural beauty\, a spacious meditation hall\, comfortable accommodations\, delicious meals\, and access to walking trails. The center is nestled in a majestic redwood forest\, adjacent to county parks and open space preserves. Just a few minutes’ walk from the meditation hall you will find yourself strolling along creek side paths\, surrounded by the powerful serenity of the redwood forest. \nCOVID PRECAUTIONS: Participants will be required to take a rapid-antigen test prior to arriving\, and depart if symptoms of illness arise. \nRegister now! Space is limited. \nThe retreat begins with registration at 2:30 pm on Tuesday\, May 6; it ends with an optional noon lunch on Friday\, May 16. It is intended for meditators who are already familiar with mindfulness based practice\, and have previously attended at least one week long silent residential insight meditation retreat. \nSITE FEATURES: This retreat will be held at Redwood Glen\, a lovely retreat center nestled in a redwood forest between La Honda and Pescadero. SUMMARY:ONLINE SUTTA STUDY RETREAT: Living Without Enemies
DESCRIPTION:Living Without Enemies\nA Weekend ONLINE AT-HOME Sutta Study Retreat\nwith Shaila Catherine \nJune 28 – 30\, 2024 \nThe Buddha said\, “The world may quarrel with me\, but I do not quarrel with the world.” How can we live our lives without hate—without making anyone into an enemy? \nThis program will use both sutta study and meditation practice to explore the Buddha’s teachings on anger. We will examine how untrained minds meet unpleasant experiences with irritation\, blame\, prejudice\, and hatred; and how trained minds abide at ease in the face of difficulties. The Discourses of the Buddha offer us empowering stories\, similies\, instructions\, and teachings that can help us understand and overcome our own aversive tendencies. Through meditative development we learn to meet pain\, disagreement\, and even abuse\, with a balanced\, kind\, and wise attention; we free the mind from the underlying tendency to hate. \nPlease join us as we deepen our practice together through a program of live video conferences with Shaila Catherine. The online meetings will include guided meditations\, Dharma talks\, and question and answer sessions. \nRegistration is required. Scroll down to choose a ticket level. Registration may close a few days prior to the retreat\, so don’t wait to the last minute! \nMore information and a link to join the zoom video conferences will be emailed to registrants a few days prior to the retreat. \nThis retreat is appropriate for all levels of meditators—beginning\, intermediate\, and experienced practitioners. \n\nRETREAT SCHEDULE (Times are given in Pacific Time\, San Francisco) \n\n\nFriday\n4:30 – 6:00 PM– Opening Session – Guided Meditation and Dhamma Talk \n\n\nSaturday\n8:00 – 8:45 AM – Morning Meditation\n11:00 – 1:00 AM – Session One\n3:00 – 5:00 PM – Session Two \n\n\nSunday\n8:00 – 8:45 AM – Morning Meditation\n11:00 – 1:00 AM – Session One\n3:00 – 5:00 PM – Session Two \n\n\nRETREAT SCHEDULE (Times are given in Eastern Time\, Boston) \n\n\nFriday\n7:30 – 9:00 PM – Opening Session – Guided Meditation and Dhamma Talk \n\n\nSaturday\n11:00 – 11:45 AM – Morning Meditation\n2:00 – 4:00 PM – Session One\n6:00 – 8:00 PM – Session Two \n\n\nSunday\n11:00 – 11:45 AM – Morning Meditation\n2:00 – 4:00 PM – Session One\n6:00 – 8:00 PM – Session Two \n\nVisit our Founding Teacher page for biography and photograph of the teacher. \nQuestions?: For more information contact sit \nCo-sponsored by Bodhi-Retreats and Insight Meditation South Bay \n\nRegistration: Registration is required for this course. It is one of the very few retreats each year in which Shaila systematically guides students to establish jhana by working step by step with the Anapanasati Sutta. SUMMARY:Retreat in Georgia: Concentration\, Jhana\, and the Breath
DESCRIPTION:Concentration\, Jhana\, and the Breath\nA 10-day meditation retreat with Shaila Catherine\nMonday\, October 23 – Thursday November 2\, 2023\nat Calvin Center\, 13550 Woolsey Road\, Hampton\, GA 30228\n(near Atlanta\, GA) \nThe retreat begins with registration from 2:30 – 4:00 pm on Monday\, October 23. The retreat ends with lunch on Thursday\,  November 2. \nPartial attendance may be possible\, but it must begin on the first day of the retreat and priority will be given to those registering for the full retreat. \nThis retreat will follow the approach to deepening concentration and attaining the absorption states of jhāna as described in Shaila Catherine’s first book\, Focused and Fearless. Meetings with the teacher in small groups and one-on-one dialogs will tailor the practices to meet the needs and interests of individual students. See our Concentration and Jhana FAQ page for more information about developing concentration and the absorption states of jhāna. \nThis silent retreat is structured with alternating periods of sitting and walking meditation\, dhamma teachings\, and teacher consultations. It is intended for meditators who are already familiar with mindfulness based practice\, and have previously attended at least one week long silent residential insight meditation retreat. \nPrior to the retreat\, please read the first half of Focused and Fearless by Shaila Catherine. \nSITE FEATURES: This retreat will be held at the Calvin Center in Georgia. It is a lovely and quiet retreat center in the country side that boasts a small lake and opportunities for canoeing. It is conveniently situated less than 30-minutes from Atlanta’s airport. You will enjoy the benefits of natural beauty\, a spacious meditation hall\, comfortable accommodations\, delicious meals\, access to walking trails\, and the chance for mindful canoeing. \nCOVID PRECAUTIONS: Please read our page on COVID Measures and Compliance Requirements. Space is limited. \nParticipants who are traveling from afar might need to check flight times carefully\, and if necessary arrange to stay in a hotel the night before the retreat. SUMMARY:Retreat in Michigan: Loving Kindness\, Concentration\, & Jhana Factors
DESCRIPTION:Registration is now closed for this retreat.\nCultivating Loving Kindness\, Concentration\, and the Jhana Factors\nwith Shaila Catherine\nTuesday\, August 22\, 2023 – Thursday\, August 31\, 2023\nPartial attendance can be arranged for the first 3 nights. \nLOVING KINDNESS (mettā) is a profound quality of friendliness toward all of life. Mettā meditation cultivates a heartful wish that all beings be happy\, beginning with ourselves and gradually expanding the field of loving kindness to embrace those who we love\, and those who are difficult to love\, until this caring radiates to all beings without exception. Loving kindness meditation is a practice of happiness that heals the heart\, meets the pains of life with sensitivity\, and strengthens the inner serenity that is essential for concentration. Through the practice of mettā we cultivate deep joy\, develop the five jhāna factors that support meditative absorption and a beautiful mind\, and incline toward what Buddhist texts describe as a vast\, exaulted\, and “immeasurable liberation of the mind through loving kindness.” \nThis retreat will offer instructions for a variety of approaches to mettā practice including the use of specific beings\, groups of beings\, all beings\, and radiating the beautiful force of mettā in specific directions\, all directions\, and all realms. Guided meditations and dhamma teachings will help develop a mind free from hostility and ill will that is supported by the jhana factors and able to attain the concentrated states of jhanā via mettā practice. There will be alternating periods of sitting and walking meditation\, dhamma teachings\, question and answer sessions\, self-scheduled practice periods\, and small group discussions with the teacher. \nSITE FEATURES: Colombiere Retreat and Conference Center is a comfortable Jesuit retreat center located in woodlands about a one hour drive north of Detroit\, Michigan. SUMMARY:Retreat in California: Body\, Impermanence\, and Death
DESCRIPTION:Liberating Meditations on the Body\, Impermanence\, and Death\nA 10-day meditation retreat with Shaila Catherine\nTuesday\, May 9 – Friday May 19\, 2023\nat Redwood Glen\, 100 Wright Drive\, Loma Mar\, CA 94021 \n“Mindfulness of death\, when developed and cultivated\, is of great fruit and benefit\, culminating in the deathless\, having the deathless as its consummation.”\n– Anguttara Nikaya 8.7 \nWestern societies seem adept at hiding death behind closed doors or in “sanitized” locations like hospitals and nursing homes. Most people rarely see corpses up close or witness the process of dying. Have we have lost access to the spiritual insights that a closer connection with death could bring? \nDeveloping mindfulness of our own death can protect the mind from complacency\, and inspire us to practice dharma with greater energy and sincerity. Formal death contemplation can prepare us for the inevitable event of dying\, help us to let go of latent fears\, stimulate profound insights into impermanence\, clarify priorities\, and abandon sensory attachments. \nMany forms of maranasati (mindfulness of death) are taught in Buddhist traditions. This retreat will begin with mindfulness of the body practices\, and then introduce specific Buddhist approaches to the contemplation of death through guided meditations that encourage the perception of impermanence\, develop ease with letting go\, and use visualizations of skeletons and decomposing corpses as a powerful means for exploring impermanence and nonattachment. Most simply\, we will practice remaining aware and balanced as we reflect on the fact that we will surely die. These contemplations can remove fear of death\, produce a sense of being at ease with the nature of things\, and support the development of mindfulness\, concentration\, and insight. \nThis silent retreat is structured with alternating periods of sitting and walking meditation\, dhamma teachings\, small group discussions\, and teacher consultations. It is intended for meditators who are already familiar with mindfulness based practice\, and have previously attended at least one multi-day silent residential retreat. \nCOVID PRECAUTIONS: Please read our page on COVID Measures and Compliance Requirements. The retreat ends after lunch at 1:00 pm on Thursday\, September 8. \nPartial attendance is possible in some cases\, but it must begin on the first day of the retreat and priority will be given to those registering for the full retreat. A limited number of commuter spaces may be available. \nMental restlessness is an insidious and pervasive hindrance that most practitioners struggle to overcome. We can refine our skills for working with the modes of thinking that distract us from being mindful: critical thoughts\, planning\, worrying\, lustful thoughts\, judging\, memories\, internal commentaries\, to name a few. The teachings on this retreat will present a sequence of strategies for dealing with obstructive mental patterns; these progressive instructions are found in two discourses in the Middle Length Discourses (suttas 19 and 20). Practitioners will be encouraged to develop a mindfulness-based meditation practice\, while exploring these strategies. The practice can free the mind from habitual distractions\, nurture calm\, concentration\, and jhana\, and incline toward a liberating understanding of emptiness.\n\nThis retreat is suitable for practitioners of any level\, providing you have attended at least one prior silent residential retreat.\n\nPreparation: Please read the following two discourses prior to the retreat. You may wish to bring a print out to the retreat for your personal reference.\n\nhttps://suttacentral.net/mn19/en/bodhi\nhttps://suttacentral.net/mn20/en/bodhi\n\nDaily group instructions will explore a multitude of ways to work with thoughts. Group and one-to-one guidance will tailor the practices to meet the needs and interests of individual students.\nThis silent retreat is structured with alternating periods of sitting and walking meditation\, dhamma teachings\, and teacher consultations. It will provide an ideal occasion for nurturing serenity and calmness\, removing distracting thoughts\, and inclining the mind toward a liberating realization of emptiness. This retreat is intended for meditators who already have an established mindfulness based practice\, and have previously attended at least one multi-day silent residential retreat. Students will be expected to practice a mindfulness-based approach to meditation practice.\n\nRegister early! Space is limited.  \nABOUT THE SITE: Situated in a quiet rural area just outside of Atlanta\, the Ingnatius House\, a Jesuit retreat center offers convenience and comfort to support deep meditative experience. \nTO REGISTER: Please use the online form at the link below to submit your registration and waiver forms. \nLink to registration form: IH 2022 Registration Form \nThis form will take approximately 20 minutes to fill out. You have the option of paying the non-refundable deposit of $250 or the full retreat payment either by mailing a check to the registrar or by making a Zelle bank transfer. The address and account information for making this payment will be included in the registration confirmation email. \nIf we must cancel the retreat for any reason (such as if we are under shelter-in-place orders at the time of the retreat)\, we will return your deposit and fees\, however\, the $250 deposit remains non-refundable if you cancel your reservation. Details of our cancellation policy are on the registration form. \nREQUIREMENTS: This 10-night retreat is designed for experienced students. Previous retreat experience in the insight meditation tradition is required\, with a minimum of at least one week-long silent residential retreat. If you have less than one week-long silent retreat experience\, your attendance requires approval from the teacher. \nACCOMMODATIONS AND MEALS: Ignatius House has been described as a hidden jewel in the Atlanta area. It is situated on 20 acres of lush secluded woodland overlooking the Chattahoochee River. The site boasts 1.5 miles of trail winding up and down through tall pines\, along the river\, over quaint bridges\, and has many places to sit and soak in the serenity of this environment as it nourishes the heart. Seclusion and quietude permeate the environment\, while it is conveniently accessible from the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International airport. \nAll accommodations are in comfortable modest single rooms; each room has a private ensuite bathroom. Three meals a day will be prepared by the center’s acclaimed chef and professional culinary team. The meals will include omnivore and vegetarian options\, plentiful salads\, and daily desserts. Snacks\, coffee\, and tea will be available throughout the day. With advanced notice\, the culinary team will be happy to work with allergies and special food needs. \nThe retreat facility is handicapped accessible. If you have mobility limitations\, please contact the registrar for details. \nPlease note that this will be a non-smoking retreat. \nCOST: 10 nights (includes accommodation and meals) is $2800 – $1900 sliding scale\, plus a donation to the teachers at the end of retreat. The estimated actual per-person cost for this retreat (if we used a fixed rate) is $2300. By selecting an amount above $2300\, your generosity supports those who need to select a lower rate to attend the retreat. This sliding scale will allow most scholarship needs to be managed by self-selecting an amount lower than $2300. \nCOMMUTER OPTIONS: \n\nCommuter option (no sleeping accommodations) for full retreat including lunch and dinner is $2300 – $1300 sliding scale.\nCommuter option (no sleeping accommodations) for full retreat including breakfast\, lunch and dinner is $2300 – $1500 sliding scale.\n\nPARTIAL RETREAT OPTIONS: Registration options for partial retreat attendance are below. Priority will be given to students who are registering for the full 10-nights course. SUMMARY:ONLINE RETREAT: Mindfulness of Death
DESCRIPTION:Mindfulness of Death\nAn Online Weekend Retreat via Zoom\nWith Shaila Catherine\nAssisted by Peter Gilmore and Neil Stegall \nMay 20 – 22\, 2022 \nRegistration is required. Scroll down to choose a ticket level. Registration will close three days prior to the retreat\, so don’t wait to the last minute! \n“Mindfulness of death\, when developed and cultivated\, is of great fruit and benefit\, culminating in the deathless\, having the deathless as its consummation.”\n– Anguttara Nikaya 8.7 \nWestern societies are adept at hiding death. It occurs behind closed doors or in “sanitized” locations like hospitals and nursing homes. Most people rarely see corpses up close or witness the process of dying. It may seem that we have lost access to the spiritual insights that a closer connection with death could bring. Most simply\, we practice remaining aware and balanced as we reflect on the fact that we will surely die. These contemplations can remove fear of death and produce a sense of being at ease with the nature of things. \nThis online weekend at-home retreat will introduce a Buddhist approach to the contemplation of death and dying through a program of live video conferences with Shaila Catherine\, Peter Gilmore\, and Neil Stegall. The online meetings will include guided meditations\, Dharma talks\, question and answer sessions and discussions. \nRegistration is required. Scroll down to choose a ticket level. Registration will close about 3 days prior to the retreat\, so don’t wait to the last minute! \nZoom links will be emailed to registrants a few days prior to the retreat. \nRETREAT SCHEDULE \nTimes are given in Pacific Time (PDT) \nFriday\n5:30 – 7:00 pm        Opening Session\, Mindfulness of Death \nSaturday\n7:00 – 7:45am         Morning Meditation with Peter and Neil\n8:00 – 8:45am         Morning Guided Meditation with Shaila\n10:00– 12:00pm     Morning Teaching with Shaila\n1:30 – 3:30pm         Afternoon Teaching with Shaila\n4:15 – 5:30pm         Reflection and Discussion Group with Peter and Neil \nSunday\n7:00 – 7:45am         Morning Meditation with Peter and Neil\n8:00 – 8:45am         Morning Guided Meditation with Shaila\n10:00– 12:00pm     Morning Teaching with Shaila\n1:30 – 3:30pm         Afternoon Teaching with Shaila\n4:15 – 5:30pm         Reflection and Discussion Group with Peter and Neil \nVisit our Founding Teacher page for a biography and photograph of the teacher\, Shaila Catherine. \nQuestions? SUMMARY:Concentration\, Jhana\, and Breath - Retreat in Northern California
DESCRIPTION:Concentration\, Jhana\, and Breath: a 9-night Meditation Retreat in Northern California\nled by Shaila Catherine\nTuesday\, May 3\, 2022 – Thursday\, May 12\, 2022.\nRegistration will end at 12:00 noon (Pacific Time) on Friday\, April 22. \nNOTE: Vaccination against COVID-19 is required to attend this retreat.  \nThe retreat begins with registration from 2:00 – 3:30 pm on Tuesday\, May 3. The retreat ends at 11:30 am on Thursday\, May 12. Early arrivals can be arranged for Monday\, May 2. \nPartial attendance is possible in some cases\, but it must begin on the first day of the retreat and priority will be given to those registering for the full retreat. \nThis retreat will utilize the breath as the primary meditation object and will encourage the development of meditative skills that lead to deep concentration (samadhi) and insight (vipassana). Daily group instructions will focus on the sixteen steps in the Anapanasati Sutta as a route to jhana and/or liberating insight. Meetings with the teacher in small groups and one-on-one dialogs will tailor the practices to meet the needs and interests of individual students. Some students may choose to emphasize concentration practice throughout the retreat; others may emphasize vipassana; and some may practice both concentration and insight inconjunction with mindfulness of breathing.  \nThis retreat offers a special opportunity to train in concentration and jhana practices with personal guidance from Shaila Catherine. It is one of the very few retreats each year in which Shaila systematically guides students to establish jhana by working step by step with the Anapanasati Sutta. See our Concentration and Jhana FAQ page for more information about developing concentration and the absorption states of jhana. \nThis silent retreat is structured with alternating periods of sitting and walking meditation\, dhamma teachings\, and teacher consultations. \nPrior to the retreat\, please read the first half of Focused and Fearless by Shaila Catherine\, and the Anapanasati Sutta. You may download the sutta at: https://suttacentral.net/mn118/en/bodhi \nRegister early! Space is limited.\nWe keep this retreat small (under 40 participants in non-pandemic years\, and considerably less when COVID restrictions are required) to enable in-depth guidance from Shaila. We have exclusive use of the retreat center for the duration of our program. Nestled in a quiet valley in Lake County of Northern California\, it offers a powerful and intimate environment for deep meditation practice. You will enjoy the benefits of natural beauty\, a spacious meditation hall\, access to walking trails\, an unheated pool and heated hot tub that may be used in silence. \nTO REGISTER: \nPlease use the online form at the link below to submit your registration and waiver forms. \n\nLink to Registration Form\n\nThis form will take approximately 20 minutes to fill out. \n\nIf we must cancel the retreat for any reason (such as if we are under shelter-in-place orders at the time of the retreat)\, we will return your deposit and fees\, however\, the $250 deposit remains non-refundable if you cancel your reservation. Details of our cancellation policy are on the registration form. \n\nREQUIREMENTS: The 9-night retreat is designed for experienced students who are fully vaccinated to protect against COVID-19. Previous retreat experience in the insight meditation tradition is required\, with a minimum of at least one week-long silent residential retreat. If you have less than one week-long silent retreat experience\, your attendance requires approval from the teacher. \nIf you wish to request an exception to the vaccination requirement\, contact the registrar. If extreme circumstances prohibit vaccination\, we will consider admitting a maximum of 2 unvaccinated participants who agree to strictly isolate for 14 days prior to the retreat\, can travel safely to the retreat\, and test negative for COVID-19 in the 3 days prior to the retreat. \nACCOMMODATIONS: The retreat facility is somewhat handicapped accessible. If you have mobility limitations\, please contact the registrar for details. \nThere are a variety of accommodations in cabins\, lodges\, and bunk rooms that include single\, double\, triple\, and quad occupancy. RV with hook up\, car camping\, tenting\, and two unheated wooden screened huts are also available. If you have a nice tent\, waterproof tarp\, and comfortable futon or sleeping pad then camping can be a delightful option at this retreat center. \nPlease note that this will be a non-smoking retreat.\nWe offer a nut-free meal plan to support those with severe nut allergies. \nCOST: Registration fees cover 9 nights and include administration\, accommodation and meals costs. There will be an opportunity to offer a donation to the teacher at the end of retreat. \nDue to precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19\, we will not be assigning double occupancy rooms\, except for occasions when friends or couples register together. To provide single rooms we must leave the majority of beds unoccupied and run a very small retreat. Therefore\, most participants will need to select the single room option and a rate along the single room sliding scale. \n\nSingle occupancy sliding scale: $2800 – $1900 (estimated actual cost is $2300)\nCamping or double occupancy sliding scale for friends or couples sharing a room: $1900 – $1400 (estimated actual cost is $1650)\n\nThe estimated actual costs represent the amounts that we would have charged to cover the cost of accommodations\, food\, and basic administrative expenses if we had used a fixed rate instead of a sliding scale. \nSelecting an amount above the estimated actual cost will support the retreat and enable those who need to select a lower rate to attend the retreat. Selecting an amount below the estimated actual cost self-selects a supported scholarship rate. This sliding scale will allow most scholarship needs to be managed by self-selecting an amount lower than the estimated actual costs. Inquire with the registrar if you need additional scholarship support to attend. \nMONASTIC SCHOLARSHIPS: A few monastic scholarships are available for this retreat. These scholarships provide either partial or full scholarships for ordained practitioners who do not have personal funds to pay retreat fees. To apply for a monastic scholarship\, please fill out the usual registration form at the above link. Include a note to the registrar requesting a monastic scholarship. Indicate whether you need a full scholarship\, or if you are able to contribute a portion of the fees. Suggest the amount that would be comfortable for you to contribute. Monastics are responsible for their own transportation costs. The scholarship grant covers room and board for the duration of the retreat. Apply early—monastic scholarship requests must be received at least 2 months prior to the start of the retreat. \nPARTIAL RETREAT OPTIONS: Registration options for partial retreat attendance are below. Priority will be given to students who are registering for the full 9-nights course. Applicants for partial attendance will be placed on a wait list which will be reviewed approximately 2 months prior to the retreat and confirmed if space is available. To apply for partial attendance\, you must submit the registration application and deposit. \nPartial Attendance Rates: \n\n3 nights (Tuesday–Friday) – Camping or doubles attending together $720; Singles $990.\n4 nights (Tuesday–Saturday) – Camping or doubles attending together $940; Single $1300.\n5 nights (Tuesday–Sunday) – Camping or doubles attending together $1150; Single $1600.\n6 nights (Tuesday–Monday) – Camping or doubles attending together $1350; Single $1890.\n7-8 nights uses the sliding scale for the full retreat: Camping or doubles attending together $1900 – $1400; Single $2800 – $1900.\n\nWORK STUDY POSITIONS: Two or three people may register for a work-study retreat. These service roles have a registration fee of $800 and involve 3-4 hours of work per day (mostly kitchen work\, grocery shopping in advance of the retreat\, managing yogi jobs). Work-study arrival should be on Monday May 2 to help set up the retreat. Inquire with the registrar for more information about service roles. \nDANA: Compensation for the teacher is not included in the registration price. There will be an opportunity to offer donations to the teacher(s) at the end of the retreat. \nQUESTIONS?: Retreat registrar\, Jennifer Johnson at meditation3bodhicourses \nCo-sponsored by Bodhi Retreats and Insight Meditation South Bay

SUMMARY:Massachusettes: Study Retreat on Anapanasati
DESCRIPTION:The Buddha’s Teachings on Mindfulness of Breathing\nwith Shaila Catherine\nNovember 12-18\, 2021 \nThis course will explore the practice and study of ānāpānasati\, the Buddha’s sixteen step-by-step instructions on Mindfulness with Breathing. Mindfulness with breathing is considered to be one of the most important meditation subjects in the Nikāyas — it is a profound and versatile practice that frees the mind from hindrances\, cultivates clarity\, joy\, and concentration\, produces insight into impermanence\, and leads directly to the realization of nibbana.\nOur study will focus on the Ānāpānasati Sutta (MN 118). We will read it along with several additional discourses found in the Ānāpānasati Saṃyutta (SN 54) and the Middle Length Discourses to expand our understanding of the purposes for undertaking mindfulness with breathing\, and the contexts in which the Buddha taught this comprehensive meditative training.\nWe will apply the sixteen steps as a systematic meditative training\, and also discuss ways that several modern meditation teachers have interpreted this practice. \nFor information and registration details visit the website for the Barre Center for Buddhist Studies: https://www.buddhistinquiry.org/course/the-buddhas-teachings-on-mindfulness-of-breathing/ \n

SUMMARY:Concentration\, Jhana\, and Breath - Two 10-night Retreats in Southern California
DESCRIPTION:In-depth meditation with sixteen steps of anapanasati samadhi\nled by Shaila Catherine\nTHIS RETREAT IS NOW CLOSED (updated Aug 17).\nFull Retreat: August 10-31\, 2021\nPart One: August 10-20\, 2021\nPart Two: August 21-31\, 2021 \nLocation: Big Bear Retreat Center\, Southern California \nNOTE: Vaccination against COVID-19 is required to attend this retreat.  \nThese two back to back 10-day retreats will provide the opportunity to sit for 3 weeks. Some students may choose to emphasize concentration practice throughout the retreat; others may practice both concentration and insight inconjunction with mindfulness of breathing. Teachings on Part One will emphasize the development of concentration; teachings on Part Two will emphasize liberating insight. \nThis retreat offers a special opportunity to train in concentration\, jhana\, and insight practices with personal guidance from Shaila Catherine. It is one of the very few retreats each year in which Shaila systematically guides students to establish jhana by working step-by-step with the Anapanasati Sutta. \nThis silent retreat is structured with alternating periods of sitting and walking meditation\, dhamma teachings\, and teacher consultations. See our Concentration and Jhana FAQ page for more information about developing concentration and the absorption states of jhana. \nPrior to the retreat\, please read Focused and Fearless by Shaila Catherine\, and the Anapanasati Sutta. You may download the sutta at: https://suttacentral.net/mn118/en/bodhi \nWe keep this retreat small to enable in-depth guidance from Shaila (under 40 participants in a normal year\, and much smaller (about 25) until the pandemic subsides). \nABOUT THE SITE: Big Bear Retreat Center is located in the serenity of the forest outside Los Angeles\, CA at a 7000′ elevation. It is a 90-minute drive from the nearest airport—Ontario Airport in Riverside\, CA. \nTO REGISTER:  Please use the online form at the link below to submit your registration and waiver forms. \nThis form will take approximately 20 minutes to fill out. \n\nLink to registration form: BB2021 Registration Form \nParticipants must be vaccinated and agree to abide by our guidelines to prevent the spread of COVID-19. A question in the registration form asks if you agree to comply: Covid-Guidelines \nREQUIREMENTS: This retreat is designed for experienced students who are fully vaccinated to protect against COVID-19. Previous retreat experience in the insight meditation tradition is required\, with a minimum of at least one week-long silent residential retreat. If you have less than one week-long silent retreat experience\, your attendance requires approval from the teacher. \nACCOMMODATIONS AND MEALS: Accommodations are in 3-4 room cabins. Some rooms have ensuite and others have shared bathrooms. Individual cabin rooms are either double or single occupancy. A camping option is not currently offered because separate bathroom facilities are not available for campers. Three meals a day will be offered with omnivore and vegetarian options. If you have mobility limitations\, please contact the registrar for details. \nPlease note that this will be a non-smoking retreat. \nCOSTS: Registration fees cover accommodations\, meals\, and basic administrative expenses. There will be an opportunity to offer donations to the teacher at the end of the retreat. \nIf you are registering after July 1\, please send the full payment rather than just the deposit with your application.. \nUpdated Aug 1: Due to precautions regarding the spread of COVID-19\, the double occupancy rate is only available to couples or friends who are arriving together and agree to share the room. We cannot arrange double accommodations.\nMost participants will need to select the single room option and a rate along the single room sliding scale. Contact the registrar if you need financial assistance to attend the retreat.  \nCOST for 10-nights: \n\nSingle occupancy sliding scale: $2800 – $1950 (estimated actual cost is $2300)\nDouble occupancy only available for couples or friends who arrange to stay together: $1900 – $1400 (estimated actual cost is $1650)\n\nThe estimated actual costs represent the amount that we would have charged to cover costs for accommodations\, food\, and administrative expenses if we had used a fixed rate instead of a sliding scale—$1650 for double accommodations\, and $2300 for single accommodations per each 10-night retreat. \nSelecting an amount above the estimated actual cost will support the retreat and enable those who need to select a lower rate to attend the retreat. Selecting an amount below the estimated actual cost self-selects a supported scholarship rate. This sliding scale will allow most scholarship needs to be managed by self-selecting an amount lower than the estimated actual cost. Inquire with the registrar if you need additional scholarship support or a payment plan to attend. \nWORK STUDY POSITIONS: 8/4/21 Two work-study positions have just become available. If you are interested in attending in a service role\, fill out the registration form and email the registrar right away! Two or three people may register for a work-study retreat. These service roles have a registration fee of $1100 per 10-night retreat\, and involve approximately 4 hours of work per day (mostly kitchen work\, and housekeeping). Work-study arrival is on August 9 or August 20 to help set up the retreat. Inquire with the registrar for more information about these service roles. \nMONASTIC SCHOLARSHIPS: Several monastic scholarships are available for this retreat. These scholarships provide either partial or full scholarships for ordained practitioners. Full scholarships are intended for monastics who do not earn money\, and do not have money to spend on fees. To apply for a monastic scholarship\, please fill out this registration form. \nDANA: Compensation for the teacher is not included in the registration price. There will be an opportunity to offer donations to the teachers at the end of the retreat. \nQuestions?: awake \nCo-sponsored by Bodhi Retreats and Insight Meditation South Bay

The five factors are applied attention\, sustained attention\, joy\, happiness\, and one-pointedness of mind. Although these are called the Five Jhana Factors\, they are not exclusive to jhana states. The teachings on this retreat will provide practical instructions for developing and balancing these factors; distinguishing between the jhana factors and the states of jhana absorption; and examining the powerful role that concentration plays on the path of awakening. \nDaily group instructions will emphasize loving-kindness (metta)\, however\, students are welcome to practice mindfulness with breathing or satipatthana practices if they prefer. Group and one-to-one guidance will tailor the practices to meet the needs and interests of individual students. \nThis silent retreat is structured with alternating periods of sitting and walking meditation\, dhamma teachings\, and teacher consultations. SUMMARY:Beyond Distraction - Retreat in California
DESCRIPTION:Due to the current shelter-in-place orders\, we have moved the retreat that was previously scheduled for January\, to new dates: May 4-14\, 2021.  \nThis retreat is open for registration! \nThis will be a very special retreat—a rare opportunity to practice with seclusion and intimacy. We will  limit attendance\, wear masks indoors\, increase ventilation\, practice social distancing\, have daily temperature checks and self-scheduled practice periods. We believe the site of Redwood Glen offers a responsible place for a small group retreat. There are private rooms with ensuite private baths\, an enormous dining hall and also outdoor seating in a beautiful Redwood forest. Even with our precautions\, any gathering will involve some degree of risk\, so we leave it to your good judgement to determine if this opportunity is appropriate for you.\nPlease review the preventative measures taken by the center\, our new guidelines for reducing the spread of the coronavirus\, and comments from students who attended our recent retreat in Georgia in September 2020.\n\nCOVID_Information-And-Guidelines_RedwoodGlen2021\nCOVID_Participant Quotes\n\nBeyond Distraction: Overcoming Distracting Thoughts\nA 10-day meditation retreat with Shaila Catherine\nTuesday\, May 4 – Friday May 14\, 2021.\nPartial attendance can be arranged but must start on the first day of the retreat. The practice can free the mind from habitual distractions\, nurture calm\, concentration\, and jhana\, and incline toward a liberating understanding of emptiness. \nThis retreat is suitable for practitioners of any level\, providing you have attended at least one prior silent residential retreat. \nPreparation: Please read the following two discourses prior to the retreat. You may wish to bring a print out to the retreat for your personal reference. \n\nhttps://suttacentral.net/mn19/en/bodhi\nhttps://suttacentral.net/mn20/en/bodhi\n\nDaily group instructions will explore a multitude of ways to work with thoughts. Group and one-to-one guidance will tailor the practices to meet the needs and interests of individual students. \nThis silent retreat is structured with alternating periods of sitting and walking meditation\, dhamma teachings\, and teacher consultations. Students will be expected to practice a mindfulness-based approach to meditation practice. \nRegister now! Space is limited. \nWe usually keep this retreat small (under 36 participants) to enable in-depth guidance from Shaila. To increase social distancing due to the pandemic\, we are limiting attendance to 24 participants. \nThe retreat begins with registration at 2:00 pm on Tuesday\, May 4; it ends with an optional noon lunch on Friday\, May 14. Participants who are traveling from afar might need to check flight times carefully\, and if necessary arrange to stay in a hotel the night before the retreat. Early-arrival accommodations are not available at this retreat center\, and we must depart shortly after lunch on the closing day. \nTO REGISTER: Please use the online form at the link below to submit your registration and waiver forms. \n\nLink to registration form: https://www.imsb.org/RG2021/\n\nThis form will take approximately 20 minutes to fill out. \n\nThe retreat facility is somewhat handicapped accessible. Accommodations include comfortable hotel-style rooms with ensuite baths\, and a few dorm-style cabins. RV camping with hook ups are available. See the application form for accommodation details. \nCOST: 10 nights (includes accommodation and meals)\, plus a donation to the teachers at the end of retreat. \nDue to precautions regarding the spread of COVID-19\, the double occupancy rate is only available to couples or friends who are arriving together and agree to share the room. Most participants will need to select the single room option and a rate along the single room sliding scale.  \n\nDouble occupancy sliding scale: $1900 – $1250 (estimated actual cost is $1600)\nSingle occupancy sliding scale: $2800 – $1900 (estimated actual cost is $2300)\n\nOur estimated actual costs for double accommodations and camping is $1600\, and for single accommodations it is $2300. These represent the amounts that we would have charged to cover the cost of accommodations\, food\, and basic administrative expenses if we had used a fixed rate instead of a sliding scale. \nPARTIAL ATTENDANCE: Partial attendance may be arranged for a stay of 3-6 nights\, but priority is given to full retreat participants. Partial attendees will likely be housed in double occupancy rooms. Contact the registrar to determine if single accommodations for partial attendance can be arranged. Retreats of 7-9 nights are priced using the sliding scale fee range for the full retreat\, and we discourage departures in the final days of the program.
