SUMMARY:Online Course - Developing Clarity; Discovering Mindfulness
DESCRIPTION:Developing Clarity; Discovering Mindfulness\nA training for living freely and wisely\nA 6-session ONLINE course with Shaila Catherine and Kim Allen\nThursdays\, March 18 – May 27\, 2021 \nThis course will introduce mindfulness meditation in the context of three primary trainings of the Buddhist path: ethical conduct\, mental development\, and discerning wisdom.  \nInstructions and guided meditations will teach how to cultivate mindfulness of breath\, sensations\, emotions\, thoughts and actions. Mindfulness refines our ability to focus attention\, balance energy\, remove distraction\, and develop clarity regarding all aspects of life. This series will include exercises that enhance mindfulness\, support the establishment of a daily meditation practice\, and highlight clarity in work\, relationships\, and daily activities.  \nThe course is designed with beginning and intermediate level practitioners in mind\, but would be appropriate for anyone seeking to refine fundamental meditation techniques and strengthen their daily practice. The course will meet every other week\, providing time for each participant to establish a strong daily at-home meditation practice.  \nClasses will include meditation\, teachings\, Q&A\, and discussion. Recordings of guided meditations will provide support between sessions. \n\nMarch 18 – Why Meditate? The benefits of mindfulness for a liberating path and happy life (Kim)\nApril 1 – Developing Concentration: The power of mindfulness with breathing (Shaila)\nApril 15 – Cultivating Presence: Mindfulness of the body\, on and off the cushion (Kim)\nApril 29 – Emotional Awareness: Mindfulness of mental states (Shaila)\nMay 13 – Calming the Restless Mind: Mindfulness of thoughts (Kim)\nMay 27 – Clearing the Path: Mindfulness of hindrances and intentions\, and making practice one’s own (Shaila)\n\nVIDEO CONFERENCES: We will use the Zoom video conference platform. Zoom is easy to access via computer or phone. More information will be provided in the confirmation materials after registering. \n\nVisit our Teacher Page for teacher biographies and photographs. \nREGISTRATION: Registration is required for this course. Registration fees are non-refundable. To register\, select an option under the Tickets heading at the bottom of this page. To register for a course\, you purchase one ticket\, which registers you for the entire class series. You only need to register once; you do not need to register separately for each class session.  \nCOURSE FEE: The sliding scale fee range is from $600 to $150 and includes registration fees and teacher dana. The lower end of the sliding scale is intended for those with limited financial means. The low rate of $150 is a basic administrative fee and does not include teacher dana. We encourage you to choose the highest level that is appropriate for your economic situation. By choosing to pay at the mid to high range of the sliding scale\, your generosity helps those with limited income to attend our programs\, and provides support for our teachers. \nSCHOLARSHIP ASSISTANCE: A limited number of scholarships at the rate of $75 are available for those with very limited financial means. To request this 50% discounted scholarship rate\, please inquire with the registrar prior to selecting a ticket by contacting ThursdayClass. The registrar will send recipients of scholarships a coupon code that will lower the base rate by half during the registration process. \nTAX DEDUCTIONS: The basic registration fee is not tax deductible. Donations above the base rate will be considered voluntary contributions and are deductible for any amount that is over the base rate. Each January\, the IMSB treasurer sends donors letters that acknowledge the amount given for the previous year that is above the basic rate; this serves as documentation for tax deduction purposes. \nCANCELLATION POLICY: All fees and payments are non-refundable. If it becomes necessary to cancel participation in a course\, and the registrar is notified prior to the start of the first class meeting\, your registration fee will be converted into a voucher creditable towards the fee for a future IMSB Thursday class. Vouchers must be used within one year of the initial course start date\, and may be transferred to only one future course. Cancellations that occur after the start of the first class are not eligible for the voucher credit.

Click this link for a key to course level designations. \n\nVisit our Teacher Page for teacher biographies and photographs. \nREGISTRATION: Registration is required for this course. Registration fees are non-refundable. To register\, select an option under the Tickets heading at the bottom of this page. (If you are viewing this page more than two months in advance of the course\, the Tickets heading might not yet appear\, so please check again later.) To register for a course\, you purchase one ticket\, which registers you for the entire class series. You only need to register once; you do not need to register separately for each class session. \nCourse Fee: The sliding scale fee range is from $360 to $120 and will be shared between IMSB and the teacher(s). The lower end of the sliding scale is intended for those with limited financial means. The low rate of $120 is estimated to cover the most basic costs such as rent and insurance for the specific class period. This base rate does not factor in compensation for teachers or ongoing administrative expenses for IMSB. If you pay at the mid to high range of the sliding scale\, your generosity supports those with limited income in attending our programs and also supports IMSB and the teachers\, enabling the dhamma to thrive in the South Bay area. We encourage you to choose the highest level that is appropriate for your economic situation. \nScholarship Assistance: A scholarship rate of $50 is offered for those with very limited financial means. If you need additional assistance\, or if you would like to volunteer to help out\, please inquire with the registrar by contacting ThursdayClass.

SUMMARY:Course: From Intelligence to Intuition with Kim Allen
DESCRIPTION:If you are interested in registering for this class\, please contact the registrar (ThursdayClass) to express your interest. It has not yet been determined if this class will be offered online\, cancelled\, or meet as an in-person course in the church garden due to Covid-19 precautions.  \nA six-week course led by Kim Allen and Shaila Catherine\nCultivation of Dhamma wisdom that benefits all beings. \nThursdays\, September 10 – October 15\nPlus bonus drop-in session October 22\n7:15-9:00pm\nSilence begins at 7:00. Arrive early (around 7:00) to enjoy the optional pre-class meditation period. \nModern life in the West encourages reliance on our “analytical” mind – that which does planning\, deciding\, evaluating\, analyzing\, and debating. This aspect of mind\, when untrained\, is prone to agitation\, aversion\, anxiety\, and other undesirable qualities. It can also be used in healthy ways\, such as discerning what is wholesome\, and learning and contemplating teachings. \nThrough various meditation practices and the additional nourishment of heart qualities\, the mind learns to reduce its reliance on “reason” as a more intuitive capacity strengthens. Eventually\, our mind can manifest the intuitive wisdom\, clarity\, and responsiveness that are truly beneficial for ourselves and the world. \nThis 6-week course explores practices that can help to mature the analytical mind. Each week\, we will focus on one practice. Together\, they form a mandala of skillful means. We will also learn how these practices fit into a path to liberation in Buddhist teachings. \nClasses will include meditation\, sutta study\, teachings\, and Q&A. \n\nSept 10: Arriving in the Present Moment\, with Kim Allen\nSept 17: Working with Discursive Thinking\, with Shaila Catherine\nSept 24: Skillful Use of Reflection\, with Shaila Catherine\nOct 1: Nourishment for the Path: Opening the Heart\, with Kim Allen\nOct 8: Clear Comprehension and Dhamma Investigation\, with Kim Allen\nOct 15: Intuitive Wisdom\, with Kim Allen\nOct 22: Bonus Drop-In Session – Sitting\, Walking\, and Reflection\, with Kim Allen\n\nWHO SHOULD JOIN: This course intended for people who already have a basic introduction to mindfulness. \nCOURSE LEVELS: It is designed as a level 1-3 course.

We encourage you to choose the highest level that is appropriate for your economic situation. SCHOLARSHIP ASSISTANCE: A limited number of scholarships at the rate of $62.50 are available for those with very limited financial means. To request this scholarship rate\, please inquire with the registrar prior to selecting a ticket by contacting ThursdayClass. The registrar will send recipients of scholarships a coupon code that will lower the base rate by half during the registration process. TAX DEDUCTIONS: The basic registration fee is not tax deductible. Donations above the base rate will be considered voluntary contributions and are deductible for any amount that is over the base rate. Each January\, the IMSB treasurer sends donors letters that acknowledge the amount given for the previous year that is above the basic rate; this serves as documentation for tax deduction purposes. CANCELLATION POLICY: All fees and payments are non-refundable. \n\n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:ONLINE COURSE: Intro to Sutta Study & Famous Similes
DESCRIPTION:Due to the coronavirus concerns\, we have converted our Thursday evening course into an online format starting May 21. Register Now! Scroll for tickets below.  \nLearning Through Examples: Images\, Illustrations\, and Similes in the Discourses of the Buddha\nAn ONLINE 6-week Introduction to Sutta Study with Shaila Catherine and Sharon Allen \nThursdays\, May 21 – June 25\, 2020\n5:30 pm to 7:30 pm (Pacific Time) \nThe Buddha’s teachings are peppered with images of mountains\, rivers\, oceans\, sun and moon\, lions\, jackals\, turtles\, quail\, fire\, archery\, craftsmanship\, gates\, bubbles\, mirages\, magic tricks\, ripening fruit\, purifying gold\, incubating eggs\, blind men\, sumptuous meals\, stumps\, creeping vines\, etched lines\, childhood games\, and more. What makes these images so effective? What can we learn from them today? \nThe Buddha’s teaching skill shines through the wide range of illustrations he used to convey subtle points of instruction. Ordinary people could comprehend deep topics because his examples related to ordinary aspects of daily living. Farmers would relate to the images of sowing seeds and yoking oxen to the plough; warriors would understand his stories of training horses and driving chariots. Today\, these striking similes continue to give us a vivid sense of the profound path taught by the Buddha. \nThis course will serve as an introduction to sutta study by presenting and discussing several traditional similes that illustrate important aspects of Buddhist practice.\n\nMay 21. Similes on Hindrances (AN 5:193 and MN 39.12)\nMay 28. Similes on Balanced Effort (AN 6:55 and MN 19)\nJune 4. Similes on Decision Making and Feeling (MN 46.18 and MN 45.4)\nJune 11. Similes on Views and Speculation (MN 63.5 and Udana 6.4-5)\nJune 18. Similes for Spiritual Urgency and Death Reflections (AN 6:60 and AN 7:74)\nJune 25. Similes for Calming and Concentrating the Mind (AN 3:101 and AN 3:102)\n\nWHO SHOULD JOIN: This course is open to anyone\, however\, since emphasis will be on the discourses of the Buddha rather than meditation\, participants should already have some mindfulness meditation experience. \nCOURSE LEVELS: It is designed as a level 2 course. Click this link for a key to course level designations. \nVIDEO CONFERENCES: We will use the Zoom video conference platform. (If you are viewing this page more than two months in advance of the course\, the Tickets heading might not yet appear\, so please check again later.) To register for a course\, you purchase one ticket\, which registers you for the entire class series. You only need to register once; you do not need to register separately for each class session. \nCourse Fee: The sliding scale fee range is from $390 to $130 and will be shared between IMSB and the teacher(s). The lower end of the sliding scale is intended for those with limited financial means. The low rate of $130 is estimated to cover the most basic costs for the specific class period. \nScholarship Assistance: A scholarship rate of $75 is offered for those with very limited financial means. If you need additional assistance\, or if you would like to volunteer to help out\, please inquire with the registrar by contacting ThursdayClass.
