SUMMARY:Four Noble Truths
DESCRIPTION:Ways to realize the end of suffering.\nNo one wants to suffer\, and yet we do. The first sermon that the Buddha gave after his awakening addressed the issue of suffering. He articulated four basic tenants that have been remembered as the four noble truths. They include the full understanding of suffering\, the abandoning of the causes of suffering\, the realization of the end of suffering\, and the cultivation of the path leading to the end of suffering. It is through a wise relationship to suffering\, that freedom will be known. \n\nSeptember 29 – First Noble Truth with Sharon Allen\nOctober 6 – Second Noble Truth with Shaila Catherine\nOctober 13 – Third Noble Truth with Laura Lin\nOctober 20 – Fourth Noble Truth with Shaila Catherine\nOctober 27 – Deepening practice with Shaila Catherine\n\nRead teacher biographies on our Teacher Page. \nEveryone is welcome. Chairs are provided. Bring a cushion and mat if you prefer to sit on the wood floor. \nIMSB relies upon the generosity of participants to support our teachers and cover organizational expenses. Dana is a word in the ancient Pali language that describes donations\, offerings and generosity. SUMMARY:Guest: Jennifer Dungan - Right Action In The Face of Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:Right Action In The Face Of Climate Change: Can we practice non-harming?\nBefore he went forth\, Siddartha Gautama had a palace for the cold season\, one for the hot season\, and one for the four months of the rainy season. He lived over two and a half millennia ago during the Holocene epoch. We now live in what has been called the Anthropocene epoch\, in which global warming is occurring and disrupting the seasonal patterns that had been relatively stable since Gautama’s time. This disruption\, and the extreme weather events that go along with it\, pose threats to all living beings. Tonight’s talk will explore the concept of non-harming\, right action\, and the three marks of existence in the context of a world in which activities that involve fossil fuel perpetuate or worsen climate disruption. \nJENNIFER DUNGAN began her meditation practice in 2003 with a mindfulness-based stress reduction course (MBSR) and has been practicing the dhamma since joining IMSB in 2006. For nearly thirty years\, she has worked as a scientist at NASA Ames Research Center\, studying satellite imagery of Earth with a specialty in mapping vegetation patterns and how they are affected by human activity and climate change. This talk will bring together her experience in both arenas to explore the implications of climate change on a spiritual path. \n\n  \nInsight Meditation South Bay offers two weekly meditation groups—Tuesdays in Mountain View\, and Thursdays in Saratoga. \nThis group meets every Tuesday evening for a sitting and Dhamma talk in Mountain View. The principal teacher is Shaila Catherine and guest speakers are featured regularly. Thematic series are periodically presented\, but whether or not a topic has been advertised in advance\, Shaila or a guest teacher will lead the sitting and offer teachings. See also weekly sitting. \nNewcomers are always welcome. To help newcomers get acquainted with mindfulness meditation and IMSB\, a senior member or teacher offers a beginner’s orientation beginning at 6:30 on the first Tuesday of each month. \nIMSB relies upon the generosity of participants to support our teachers and cover organizational expenses. Dana is a word in the ancient Pali language that describes donations\, offerings and generosity. Two bowls will be available at an event to practice dana for the teacher and IMSB; we encourage you to give joyfully and generously\, according to your resources and means. IMSB is a 501(c) (3) organization. All donations are tax deductible as permitted by law.

SUMMARY:Service Project: School Supplies Drive for Local Foster Kids
DESCRIPTION:IMSB is helping to provide local foster kids with needed school supplies.\nOne IMSB member (Farzaneh) has already purchased 28 backpacks. We now invite you to volunteer to fill one or more of these backpacks. \nFarzaneh writes: \nDear IMSB sangha members: \nThe practice of generosity is a basic way to experience happiness and freedom. Happiness\, inner calm and gratitude grow when they are fed by a compassionate and generous heart. \nGenerosity is not just about helping those less fortunate than us\, it is about giving freely\, without condition\, without judgment\, without need of explanation or glorification. Generosity is the act of selflessness\, and it is practice of renunciation. \nI would like to invite you to join me to send some of the foster children in our community to school in this coming school year with a brand new backpack and school supplies\, and perhaps plant a seed of kindness in the hearts of these youngsters. \nYou may down load the list of items needed for 2nd-5th graders\, and bring your donations to our IMSB weekly sitting group any Tuesday in July. \nOn behalf of the “HELP ONE CHILD “organization I will be more than happy to provide a tax deductible receipt. \nMay your giving hands and compassionate heart\, bring joy and happiness to your life and the life of others. \nFarzaneh Azadan\n IMSB member \nDownload this checklist of suggested items. You may purchase the specified items\, and any additional items you wish to add\, and bring the them to any IMSB Tuesday night meeting in July. \nPlease email Farzaneh at karuna to inform her of your intention to participate\, and specify how many backpacks you intend to fill. \nThank you!

SUMMARY:Ethics\, Action\, and the Five Precepts
DESCRIPTION:For a life of harmony and clarity. \nThis series will explore virtue as the indispensable foundation of Buddhist practice. The series will emphasize the five training precepts\, and may explore action\, ethics\, kamma\, and cause-effect dynamics. The precepts are not rules to be obediently followed; they serve as guidelines for the intentional development of compassion\, mindfulness\, and wisdom. These five precepts offer us a joyful method to cultivate the heart\, nurture harmony in our relationships\, and free the mind from inner forces of greed and anger that if unrestrained may cause suffering for ourselves and others. \n\nJuly 7 – Refraining from Intoxication with Angie Boissevain\nJuly 14 – Refraining from Stealing with Shaila Catherine\nJuly 21 – Refraining from Sexual Misconduct with Drew Oman\nJuly 28 – Refraining from False Speech with Shaila Catherine\nAugust 4 – Refraining from Killing with Ayya Santussika\nAugust 11 – Deepening Practice with Sharon Allen\n\nRead teacher biographies on our Teacher Page. SUMMARY:Speaker Series: Lesser Known Teachings
DESCRIPTION:Thus Have I Heard: Teachings Inspired by Lesser Known Discourses of the Buddha\nThe Pali Canon includes over 5\,000 discourses that document conversations and encounters that occurred during forty years of the Buddha’s ministry. Over the centuries\, certain teachings have risen to the surface with popularity and come to characterize our impression of what the Buddha taught. However\, the vast collection of source material reaches beyond these well known teachings. \nFor this speaker series\, IMSB has invited guest teachers to focus on teachings that have been largely neglected by contemporary Buddhist groups. Each talk will share a lesser-known teaching\, event\, or instruction that will enrich our comprehension of what the Buddha taught. We will discover whether broadening our source material reinforces the dominant view of Buddhist practice or paints a different picture of meditation and the path of liberation. \n\nApril 12 — with Sean Feit — Two Bright Qualities: Shame and Dread (hiri and ottappa) — Teachings from AN 7:65\nApril 19 — with Diana Clark — Sustaining Relationships — Teachings from AN 4:32\, AN 4:256  and AN 9:5\nApril 26 — with Tony Bernhard — Lessons from the Quarrel at Kosambi — Teachings from MN 48 and MN 128\nMay 3 — with Kim Allen — From Scared-in-the-Woods to Liberated — Teachings from MN 4\, on Fear and Dread\nMay 10 — with Andrea Fella — Becoming Freedom — Teachings from the Atthakavagga in the Sutta Nipata\nMay 17 — with Nona Olivia — Discerning a Trustworthy Teacher — Guidance from the Therigatha and Canki Sutta\nMay 24 – with Shaila Catherine — The Buddha’s Practical Advice for Maintaining Material Gains and Wealth\n\nAN = Anguttara Nikaya\, The Numerical Discourses of the Buddha\nMN = Majjhima Nikaya\, The Middle Length Discourses of the Buddha\n— Sutta reference numbers are based upon Bhikkhu Bodhi’s translation\, published by Wisdom Publications. \nRead speaker biographies on our Teacher’s Page. \nEveryone is welcome. SUMMARY:Special Guest Speaker – Jenny Wilks – Mindfulness
DESCRIPTION:Mindfulness\, Insight\, and Compassion\n‘Mindfulness’ is becoming such a commonly used term that its depth and liberating potential may be underestimated or misunderstood. The Buddha’s teaching on establishing mindfulness (the Satipatthana Sutta) invites us to cultivate mindfulness both ‘internally’ – a deep awareness of our inner experience\, in order to cultivate liberating insight – and ‘externally’ – an open-hearted awareness of others\, in order to cultivate an ethical and compassionate response. We will explore how together these can support our mindfulness practice so that it becomes\, as the Buddha described it\, a ‘direct path to awakening’. \n\nMarch 29 – Mindfulness Internally: Insight and Freedom\nApril 5 – Mindfulness Externally: Compassion in Action\n\nIMSB is privileged to host special guest speaker Jenny Wilks for a brief residency during which time she’ll be offering teachings on both Tuesday’s in Mountain View and Thursdays in Saratoga. She lives and teaches in England. You’ll find her biography on our Teacher’s Page. \n\nInsight Meditation South Bay offers two weekly meditation groups—Tuesdays in Mountain View\, and Thursdays in Saratoga.

SUMMARY:Paths of Skillful Action – special guest Jenny Wilks in Saratoga/San Jose
DESCRIPTION:Living an ethical life in the modern world.\nA three week series with special guest teacher Jenny Wilks. \nWhen we think of ethical practice in Buddhism\, we often focus on the traditional five precepts. However a longer list of ten paths of skillful action (kusala-kamma-patha) occurs more frequently in the early texts. They overlap with the five precepts\, and can help to reveal further what it means to live an ethically skillful life and how this encompasses and transforms the activities of body\, speech\, and mind. We will explore how these paths are described in the Pali texts and how we can understand and practice them in the modern world. \n\nMarch 17 – Skillful paths of bodily action\nMarch 24 – No meeting today. The church needs the space for their Maundy Thursday ceremony.\nMarch 31 – Skillful paths of speech\nApril 7 – Skillful paths of mind\n\nRead teacher biographies on our Teacher Page. Two bowls will be available at an event to practice dana for the teacher and IMSB; we encourage you to give joyfully and generously\, according to your resources and means.
