SUMMARY:Overcoming Obstacles to Meditation
DESCRIPTION:A practical approach to working with five classic hindrances.\nA Six-week course led by Shaila Catherine and Sharon Allen \nOctober 25 – December 13\, 2018\n7:15 pm to 9:00 pm\nSilence begins at 7:00.\nArrive early (around 7:00) to enjoy the optional pre-class meditation period. \nMEDITATION PRACTICE cultivates inner peace\, clarity\, concentration\nand joy. However\, to experience these beautiful qualities we must overcome\nobstacles such as agitation\, dullness\, distraction\, obsessive thinking\, painful\nemotions\, and reactivity. Mastering these hindrances helps us work skillfully\nwith pain\, illness\, fear\, and a wide range of obstructive patterns.\nThis six-week course will include introductory mindfulness meditation\ninstruction and focus on practical strategies for identifying and working with\ncommon hindrances in meditation practice. We will nurture the skills that\nwill enable us to work with the hindrances and thereby transform negative\npatterns into positive states. \n\nOctober 25—Working with Obstacles as the Path with Sharon Allen\nNovember 1—Unseduced by the Desire for Pleasure with Shaila\nCatherine\nNovember 8—Overcoming Aversion\, Judgment and Anger with\nShaila Catherine\nNovember 15—Staying Awake in the Face of Dullness and Boredom\nwith Shaila Catherine\nNovember 22—No class tonight. Enjoy the Thanksgiving Holiday\nNovember 29—Calming the Restless and Distracted Mind with\nSharon Allen\nDecember 6 —Freedom from Doubt with Shaila Catherine\nDecember 13—Experiencing Mindfulness and Tranquility: A drop-in\nevening for meditation practice with Shaila Catherine\n\nWHO SHOULD JOIN: This course is open to all practitioners. \nCOURSE LEVELS: This is designed as a level 1-2 course. Click this link\nfor a key to course level designations . \nVisit our Teacher Page for teacher biographies and photographs. \nREGISTRATION: Registration is required for this course. Registration fees are non-refundable. To register\, select an option under the Tickets heading at the bottom of this page. (If you are viewing this page more than two months in advance of the course\, the Tickets heading might not yet appear\, so please check again later.) To register for a course\, you purchase one ticket\, which registers you for the entire class series. You only need to register once; you do not need to register separately for each class session. \nCourse Fee: The sliding scale fee range is from $360 to $90 and will be shared between IMSB and the teacher(s). The lower end of the sliding scale is intended for those with limited financial means. The low rate of $90 is estimated to cover the most basic costs such as rent and insurance for the specific class period. This base rate does not factor in compensation for teachers or ongoing administrative expenses for IMSB. If you pay at the mid to high range of the sliding scale\, your generosity supports those with limited income in attending our programs and also supports IMSB and the teachers\, enabling the dhamma to thrive in the South Bay area. We encourage you to choose the highest level that is appropriate for your economic situation. \nScholarship Assistance: A scholarship rate of $45 is offered for those with very limited financial means. If you need additional assistance and can volunteer to help\, please inquire with the registrar about service scholarships by contacting ThursdayClass. \nTax Deductions: The basic registration fee is not tax deductible. Donations above the base rate will be considered voluntary contributions and are deductible for any amount that is over the base rate. Each January\, the IMSB treasurer sends donors letters that acknowledge the amount given for the previous year that is above the basic rate; this serves as documentation for tax deduction purposes. \nCancellation Policy: All fees and payments are non-refundable. If it becomes necessary to cancel participation in a course\, and the registrar is notified prior to the start of the first class meeting\, your registration fee will be converted into a voucher creditable towards the fee for a future IMSB Thursday class. Vouchers must be used within one year of the initial course start date\, and may be transferred to only one future course. Cancellations that occur after the start of the first class are not eligible for the voucher credit.

SUMMARY:Weekly Meditation and Teachings: Panel Discussion on Joy of Giving
DESCRIPTION:Tonight’s topic for discussion will be Joy of Giving.\nIMSB invited members to explore the practice of generosity by using $50 to support a charitable project of their choosing. They will report back to IMSB through tonight’s panel discussion and share their reflections and experiences from participating in the Joy of Giving Program. \n\nInsight Meditation South Bay offers two weekly meditation groups—Tuesdays evenings we offer an open drop-in sitting group in Mountain View\, and Thursdays we offer structured courses in Saratoga. \nThe Tuesday sitting group meets every Tuesday evening for a meditation and Dhamma talk in Mountain View. The principal teacher is Shaila Catherine and guest speakers are featured regularly. Thematic series are periodically presented\, but whether or not a topic has been advertised in advance\, Shaila or a guest teacher will lead the sitting and offer teachings. See also weekly sitting. \nNewcomers are always welcome. To help newcomers get acquainted with mindfulness meditation and IMSB\, a senior member or teacher offers a beginner’s orientation beginning at 6:30 on the first Tuesday of each month. \nIMSB relies upon the generosity of participants to support our teachers and cover organizational expenses. Dana is a word in the ancient Pali language that describes donations\, offerings and generosity. Two bowls will be available at an event to practice dana for the teacher and IMSB; we encourage you to give joyfully and generously\, according to your resources and means. IMSB is a 501(c) (3) organization. All donations are tax deductible as permitted by law.

SUMMARY:Monthly Day of Meditation with Shaila Catherine
DESCRIPTION:A day of meditation with Shaila Catherine. \nIMSB offers a day of meditation one Saturday each month. These monthly day long programs offer a consistent and easy opportunity for meditators to maintain a steady commitment to meditation\, deepen their practice\, explore various dhamma themes\, and cultivate relationships with the community—and still be home in time for dinner! \nThe day long programs are usually structured with alternating sitting and walking meditations\, augmented by meditation instructions\, reflections\, and teachings. Shaila Catherine leads most of the day longs\, complimented by periodic guest teachers or community events. At most day long events\, Shaila is available for individual consultations. \nShaila offers teachings at each event\, usually aimed at developing meditative skills. Whether or not a theme is announced in advance\, teachings will be offered to deepen understanding of the Buddhist path of practice. \nThere will be a pot-luck community meal around 12:30; please bring a food dish to share. \nEveryone is welcome. There is no registration. Folding chairs are provided. Bring a mat and cushion if you prefer to sit on the floor. Beginner’s to meditation are encouraged to come on time since both sitting and walking meditation instruction are usually offered in the mornings. \nThese monthly events may take place at any of the churches where we meet—in Los Altos\, Saratoga\, or Mountain View. Be sure to double check the website event listing to determine the correct location. \nIMSB relies upon the generosity of participants to support our teachers and cover organizational expenses. Dana is a word in the ancient Pali language that describes donations\, offerings and generosity. The lower end of the sliding scale is intended for those with limited means. The basic rate of $1100 is estimated to cover the most basic costs such as rent and insurance for the specific class period. The base rate does not factor in compensation for teachers or ongoing administrative expenses for IMSB. The scholarship rate of $55 offers an even lower rate for those with very limited financial means. \nBy choosing to give at the mid to high range of the sliding scale your generosity supports those with limited income to attend our programs\, and it supports IMSB and the teachers\, enabling the dhamma to thrive in the South Bay Area. We encourage you to choose the highest level that is appropriate for your economic situation. If you need additional scholarship assistance and can volunteer to help\, please inquire with the registrar about service scholarships by contacting ThursdayClass. \nTicketing Tip: You may purchase series tickets on any day of the series. When you purchase a ticket you are registering for the entire class series. So you only need to register once. \nTAX DEDUCTIBILITY:\nThe basic registration fee is not tax deductible and non-refundable. Donations above the base rate will be considered voluntary tax deductible contributions. Each January the IMSB treasurer sends donors letters that acknowledge the accumulated deductible donations from the previous year. This annual letter will acknowledge the amount given that is above the basic rate and serve as documentation for tax deduction purposes. \nCANCELLATION POLICY:\nAll fees and payments are non-refundable.

SUMMARY:Weekly Meditation and Teaching – Generosity and The Joy of Giving
DESCRIPTION:Tonight’s topic for discussion will be Generosity and the Joy of Giving.\nFacilitated by Sharon Allen. \nIMSB invited members to explore the practice of generosity by using $50 to support a charitable project of their choosing. Some will report back to IMSB through tonight’s panel discussion and share their reflections and experiences from participating in the Joy of Giving Program.

SUMMARY:Liberating the Mind and Heart - A Retreat Developing Compassion and Joy - near Pescadero\, CA - with Shaila Catherine
DESCRIPTION:Liberating Mind and Heart: A weeklong retreat on Cultivating Loving-Kindness\, Compassion\, Joy\, and Equanimity\nwith Shaila Catherine \nMonday\, September 17\, 2018 – Sunday September 23\, 2018.\nPartial attendance can be arranged for the first 3 or 4 nights. \nDON’T WAIT! Registration closes August 31. \nLOVING KINDNESS is a profound quality of friendliness toward all of life. Compassion is a deep commitment to non-harming. Joy highlights the blessings. Equanimity sees the truth with a balanced mind. This ancient practice called Brahma Vihara practice cultivates a heartful wish that all beings be well. It uproots tendencies toward ill will\, harming\, competitive discontent\, and craving. It is a practice of happiness that heals the heart\, meets the pains of life with sensitivity\, and strengthens the inner serenity that is essential for concentration. The Brahma Viharas can lead to the absorption states of jhana\, and to what the ancient Buddhist texts describe as a vast\, exhaulted\, and “immeasurable liberation of the mind.” \nThis retreat will include instruction\, guided meditations\, and teachings on cultivating these qualities of friendliness\, compassion\, joy\, and equanimity. There will be alternating periods of sitting and walking meditation\, dhamma teachings\, question and answer sessions\, self-scheduled practice periods\, and teacher consultations. \nThis retreat will be held at Redwood Glen\, a lovely retreat center nestled in a redwood forest between La Honda and Pescadero. It’s about a 15-minutes drive from Pescadero State Beach\, and about a 1-hour drive from either the San Francisco Airport or the San Jose airport. \nThe retreat begins with registration at 2:00 pm on September 17; it ends at 11:30 am on September 23. Participants who are traveling from afar might need to check flight times carefully\, and if necessary arrange to stay in a hotel the night before the retreat. Early-arrival accommodations are not available at the retreat center. \nRegister early! Space is limited.\nTO REGISTER: Download and complete the RG-Metta-2018 registration and waiver forms\, enclose a non-refundable deposit of $250 (payable to Bodhi-Retreats)\, and return via email and/or postal mail to: \nKatrina Bergbauer\n225 Second Avenue\nDecatur\, GA 30030 \nretreats \n\nStandard Print Reg Form-RG-Metta-2018-final\nWaiver of Liability-RG-Metta-2018\n\nThe retreat facility is somewhat handicapped accessible. Accommodations include comfortable hotel-style rooms with attached baths\, and a few dorm-style cabins. See the application form for accommodation details. \nCOST: 6 nights including accommodation and meals \n\nDouble occupancy sliding scale: $1400 – $800\nSingle occupancy sliding scale: $2000 – $1500\n\nSelecting an amount above the middle of each sliding scale range will support the retreat and enable those who need to select a lower rate to attend the retreat. Selecting an amount below the middle of the sliding scale offers participants the possibility of self-selecting a supported scholarship rate. \nInquire with the registrar if you need additional scholarship support to attend. \nPARTIAL ATTENDANCE: Partial retreat attendance can be arranged for a stay of  3 or 4 nights\, but must begin on the first day of the retreat\, September 17. See registration form for rates and contact the registrar for details. Either single or double accommodations are available for partial attendees. \nDANA: Compensation for the teacher is not included in the registration price. There will be an opportunity to offer donations to the teachers at the end of the retreat. \nCo-Sponsored by Bodhi-Retreats and Insight Meditation South Bay

SUMMARY:Meditation and Teachings in Mountain View
DESCRIPTION:Due to the coronavirus concerns\, we have converted our Tuesday evening meeting to an online format. Insight Meditation South Bay offers two weekly meditation groups—Tuesdays evenings we offer an open drop-in sitting group in Mountain View\, and Thursdays we offer structured courses in Saratoga. The Tuesday sitting group meets every Tuesday evening for a meditation and Dhamma talk in Mountain View. The principal teacher is Shaila Catherine and guest speakers are featured regularly. Thematic series are periodically presented\, but whether or not a topic has been advertised in advance\, Shaila or a guest teacher will lead the sitting and offer teachings. See also weekly sitting. Newcomers are always welcome. To help newcomers get acquainted with mindfulness meditation and IMSB\, a senior member or teacher offers a beginner’s orientation beginning at 6:30 on the first Tuesday of each month. IMSB relies upon the generosity of participants to support our teachers and cover organizational expenses. \n
