SUMMARY:Florida: Retreat. Path of Awakening. Reg has closed.
DESCRIPTION:Registration for this retreat has closed. The retreat is full. \nFebruary 3 – 10\, 2023\nOrlando\, Florida \nThe Path Of Awakening: Cultivating Concentration and Insight\nThis silent Insight Meditation retreat will provide instructions for developing mindfulness\, concentration\, and insight. The meditation practices will be directed toward nurturing mindfulness of body and mind\, enjoying clarity of consciousness\, understanding our habitual patterns\, inclining toward peace\, and recognizing how full awareness enhances the potential for liberating insight. Daily dharma teachings and guidance from the teacher make this retreat suitable for both new and experienced practitioners. \nRequirements: Vaccination against COVID-19 is required to attend this retreat. This retreat will follow more stringent disease prevention procedures than is currently required by public health orders. For example\, participants will be required to take covid tests prior to traveling and during the retreat\, and wear a mask in common in-door areas such as the meditation hall and lounges for part or all of the retreat. The specific measures we will require will be determined shortly before the time of the retreat as we consider the ever changing situation. Only apply for this retreat if you are willing to comply with measures such as wearing a mask and testing—these are very likely to be required. \nFor more information and registration visit the Orlando Insight Meditation Group website at: https://orlandoinsightmeditation.org/2021/09/a-week-long-meditation-retreat-led-by-shaila-catherine-february-2023/

SUMMARY:Transformative Teachings | Online Sutta Study Course | Shaila Catherine & Kim Allen
DESCRIPTION:Registration has closed.\nTransformative Teachings\nAn Online IMSB Dhamma Study Course with Shaila Catherine and Kim Allen\nSix Monday Evenings from February 27 – July 24\, 2023 | 5:30 – 7:00 PM Pacific Time\n\nFeb 27\nMarch 20\nApril 24\nMay 29\nJune 26\nJuly 24\n\nBuddhist teachings contain many inspiring stories of ordinary people whose lives were transformed when they encountered the Dharma. For people who met the Buddha more than two millennia ago as well as for contemporary meditators\, Dharma teachings can spark life-altering reflections\, open the mind to new possibilities\, ignite creative insights\, affirm profound understandings\, and expand one’s potential in life. \nThis 6-session online course explores a variety of transformative teachings through the extraordinary stories of select disciples of the Buddha. As we learn about the historic impact that dharma teachings have had on the lives of the early disciples\, we will explore how these teachings guide our practice today. We will observe the vital role that mindfulness and concentration play on a liberating path; recognize the courage needed to overcome obstacles; reflect on the inevitability of death; contemplate impermanence in all perceptions; cultivate wise attention to the body; practice letting go; clarify what matters most; and nourish compassion\, generosity\, and community connections. \nThe course will loosely follow the book Daughters of the Buddha by Bhikkhu Anālayo. We will explore various themes referred to in the book and follow tangents for discussion with additional readings and practices drawn from the suttas. The course will include teachings\, group discussions\, meditation\, and suggested practices. \nPlease purchase the book\, Daughters of the Buddha\, and read pages 1–33 prior to the first session. \nRegister now by selecting a ticket below to join us in delving into the teachings that may transform your life!\nCo-sponsored by Insight Meditation South Bay & Bodhi Retreats \n\nVISIT our Teacher Page for teacher biographies and photographs. \nWHO SHOULD JOIN: This course is open to anyone\, however\, since emphasis will be on the discourses of the Buddha rather than meditation\, participants should already have some mindfulness meditation experience. \nCOURSE LEVELS: It is designed as a level 2–3 course. Click this link for a key to course level designations. \nVIDEO CONFERENCES: We will use the Zoom video conference platform. Zoom is easy to access via computer or phone. More information and the zoom link will be provided in the confirmation materials after registering. This is a discussion oriented course\, and we not guarantee that there will be recordings for all the sessions. Please register only if you expect to be able to attend at least half the program. \n\nREGISTRATION:
Registration is required for this course. Registration fees are non-refundable. To register select an option under the Tickets heading at the bottom of this page. \nThe sliding scale fee range is from $590 to $190 and will be shared between IMSB and the teacher(s). The lower end of the sliding scale is intended for those with limited means. The base rate of $190 is estimated to cover basic administrative costs. The base rate does not factor in compensation for teachers or ongoing administrative expenses for IMSB. By choosing to give at the mid to high range of the sliding scale your generosity supports those with limited income to attend our programs\, and it supports IMSB and the teachers. We encourage you to choose the highest level that is appropriate for your economic situation. If you need additional scholarship assistance to attend\, we offer a 30% or 50% discount for those with financial need. To use the scholarship rates\, use one of these coupon codes during the registration process: less30%\, or halftherate. \nTICKETING TIP: You may purchase series tickets on any day of the series. When you purchase a ticket you are registering for the entire class series. So you only need to register once. \nTAX DEDUCTIBILITY:
The base registration fee is not tax deductible and non-refundable. Donations above the base rate will be considered voluntary tax deductible contributions. Each January the IMSB treasurer sends donors letters that acknowledge the accumulated deductible donations from the previous year. This annual letter will acknowledge the amount given that is above the base rate and serve as documentation for tax deduction purposes. \nCANCELLATION POLICY:
All fees and payments are non-refundable. If it becomes necessary to cancel participation in a course\, and the registrar is notified prior to the start of the first class meeting\, your registration fee will be converted into a voucher creditable towards the fee for a future IMSB course or event. Vouchers must be used within one year of the initial course start date\, and may be transferred to only one future course. Cancellations that occur after the start of the first class are not eligible for the voucher credit.

SUMMARY:Retreat in California: Body\, Impermanence\, and Death
DESCRIPTION:Liberating Meditations on the Body\, Impermanence\, and Death\nA 10-day meditation retreat with Shaila Catherine\nTuesday\, May 9 – Friday May 19\, 2023\nat Redwood Glen\, 100 Wright Drive\, Loma Mar\, CA 94021 \n“Mindfulness of death\, when developed and cultivated\, is of great fruit and benefit\, culminating in the deathless\, having the deathless as its consummation.”\n– Anguttara Nikaya 8.7 \nWestern societies seem adept at hiding death behind closed doors or in “sanitized” locations like hospitals and nursing homes. Most people rarely see corpses up close or witness the process of dying. Have we have lost access to the spiritual insights that a closer connection with death could bring? \nDeveloping mindfulness of our own death can protect the mind from complacency\, and inspire us to practice dharma with greater energy and sincerity. Formal death contemplation can prepare us for the inevitable event of dying\, help us to let go of latent fears\, stimulate profound insights into impermanence\, clarify priorities\, and abandon sensory attachments. \nMany forms of maranasati (mindfulness of death) are taught in Buddhist traditions. This retreat will begin with mindfulness of the body practices\, and then introduce specific Buddhist approaches to the contemplation of death through guided meditations that encourage the perception of impermanence\, develop ease with letting go\, and use visualizations of skeletons and decomposing corpses as a powerful means for exploring impermanence and nonattachment. Most simply\, we will practice remaining aware and balanced as we reflect on the fact that we will surely die. These contemplations can remove fear of death\, produce a sense of being at ease with the nature of things\, and support the development of mindfulness\, concentration\, and insight. \nThis silent retreat is structured with alternating periods of sitting and walking meditation\, dhamma teachings\, small group discussions\, and teacher consultations. It is intended for meditators who are already familiar with mindfulness based practice\, and have previously attended at least one multi-day silent residential retreat. \nSITE FEATURES: This retreat will be held at Redwood Glen\, a lovely retreat center nestled in a redwood forest between La Honda and Pescadero. It’s about a 15-minute drive from Pescadero State Beach\, and about a 1-hour drive from either the San Francisco Airport or the San Jose Airport. This retreat center is convenient to reach\, and yet offers a secluded and intimate environment for deep meditation practice. You will enjoy the benefits of natural beauty\, a spacious meditation hall\, comfortable accommodations\, delicious meals\, and access to walking trails. The center is nestled in a majestic redwood forest\, adjacent to county parks and open space preserves. Just a few minutes’ walk from the meditation hall you will find yourself strolling along creek side paths\, surrounded by the powerful serenity of the redwood forest. \nCOVID PRECAUTIONS: Please read our page on COVID Measures and Compliance Requirements. This will explain  the measures we are taking to prevent the spread of illness\, and the actions that will be required of retreat participants. \nRegister now! Space is limited. \nThe retreat begins with registration at 2:30 pm on Tuesday\, May 9; it ends with an optional noon lunch on Friday\, May 19. Participants who are traveling from afar might need to check flight times carefully\, and if necessary arrange to stay in a hotel the night before the retreat. Early-arrival accommodations are not available at this retreat center\, and we must depart shortly after lunch on the closing day. \nTO REGISTER: Please use the online form at the link below to submit your registration and waiver forms. \n\nRegistration Form: https://www.imsb.org/form-rg2023/\n\nThis form will take approximately 20 minutes to fill out. Upon completion of the form you will receive an email with details for completing your payment. You have the option of paying the non-refundable deposit of $250 or the full retreat payment either by mailing a check to the registrar or by making a Zelle bank transfer. The address and account information for making this payment will be included in the registration confirmation email. \n\nDetails of our cancellation policy are on the registration form. \n\nThe retreat facility is somewhat handicapped accessible. Accommodations include comfortable hotel-style rooms with ensuite baths\, and a few dorm-style cabins. RV camping with hook ups are available. See the application form for accommodation details. \nCOST: 10 nights (includes accommodation and meals)\, plus a donation to the teachers at the end of retreat. \nDue to precautions regarding the spread of COVID-19\, most participants will need to select the single room option and a rate along the single room sliding scale.  \n\nFull retreat for single occupancy: 10 nights is $3\,000 – $2\,200 sliding scale (estimated actual cost for single is $2500)\nDouble occupancy sliding scale: $2500 – $1900 (estimated actual cost for double occupancy is $2200)\nCamping in personal tent or RV sliding scale: $2200 – $1500 (estimated actual cost for camping is $1800)\n\nFee covers only accommodations\, food\, and basic administrative expenses. There will be an opportunity at the end of the retreat to make a donation to the teacher. \nThe estimated actual per-person cost if we had used a fixed rate is $2500 for a single room\, $2200 for a shared room\, and $1800 for camping. By selecting an amount above the estimated actual cost\, your generosity supports those who need to select a lower rate to attend the retreat. Selecting an amount below the estimated actual cost is equivalent to receiving a partial scholarship. \nThe sliding scale will allow most scholarship needs to be self-managed. If you need additional scholarship support to attend\, consider applying for a scholarship through https://opendharmafoundation.org\, or contact our registrar for assistance through IMSB/Bodhi-Retreats. \nPARTIAL ATTENDANCE may be arranged for a stay of at least 3 nights\, but must begin on the first day of retreat\, and priority is given to full retreat participants. We strongly encourage attendance at the full retreat. Applicants for partial attendance will be placed on a wait list which will be reviewed approximately 2 months prior to the retreat. Partial attendees will likely be housed in double occupancy rooms unless single rooms remain available 2 months prior to the retreat. You may contact the registrar to determine if single rooms for partial attendance are available. \nThe rates for partial attendance below are listed as single occupancy. The mid-point on each sliding scale is our estimated actual cost. Take 18% off any point on the sliding scale for double accommodations\, and take 25% off for camping. \n\n3 nights (Tuesday–Friday) is $1100 – $900 sliding scale\n4 nights (Tuesday–Saturday) is $1\,300 – $1100 sliding scale\n5 nights (Tuesday–Sunday) is $1\,600 – $1300 sliding scale\n6 nights (Tuesday–Monday) is $1\,900 – $1500 sliding scale\n7-9 nights is same as full retreat: single $3000 – $2200 sliding scale\n\nDANA: Compensation for the teacher is not included in the registration price. There will be an opportunity to offer donations to the teacher at the end of the retreat. \nQUESTIONS?: meditation3bodhicourses \nCo-Sponsored by Bodhi Retreats and Insight Meditation South Bay

SUMMARY:Retreat in Michigan: Loving Kindness\, Concentration\, & Jhana Factors
DESCRIPTION:Registration is now closed for this retreat.\nCultivating Loving Kindness\, Concentration\, and the Jhana Factors\nwith Shaila Catherine\nTuesday\, August 22\, 2023 – Thursday\, August 31\, 2023\nPartial attendance can be arranged for the first 3 nights. \nLOVING KINDNESS (mettā) is a profound quality of friendliness toward all of life. Mettā meditation cultivates a heartful wish that all beings be happy\, beginning with ourselves and gradually expanding the field of loving kindness to embrace those who we love\, and those who are difficult to love\, until this caring radiates to all beings without exception. Loving kindness meditation is a practice of happiness that heals the heart\, meets the pains of life with sensitivity\, and strengthens the inner serenity that is essential for concentration. Through the practice of mettā we cultivate deep joy\, develop the five jhāna factors that support meditative absorption and a beautiful mind\, and incline toward what Buddhist texts describe as a vast\, exaulted\, and “immeasurable liberation of the mind through loving kindness.” \nThis retreat will offer instructions for a variety of approaches to mettā practice including the use of specific beings\, groups of beings\, all beings\, and radiating the beautiful force of mettā in specific directions\, all directions\, and all realms. Guided meditations and dhamma teachings will help develop a mind free from hostility and ill will that is supported by the jhana factors and able to attain the concentrated states of jhanā via mettā practice. There will be alternating periods of sitting and walking meditation\, dhamma teachings\, question and answer sessions\, self-scheduled practice periods\, and small group discussions with the teacher. \nSITE FEATURES: Colombiere Retreat and Conference Center is a comfortable Jesuit retreat center located in woodlands about a one hour drive north of Detroit\, Michigan. Colombiere offers a serene environment for meditation and contemplation. It boasts spacious grounds with gardens and pathways that invite quiet walks\, and is surrounded by walking trails through pine and oak forests. \nCOVID PRECAUTIONS: Please read our page on COVID Measures and Compliance Requirements. This will explain  the measures we are taking to prevent the spread of illness\, and the actions that will be required of retreat participants. \nRegister now! Space is limited. \nThe retreat begins with registration at 2:30 pm on the first day; it ends shortly before noon on the last day and does not include lunch. Participants who are traveling from afar might need to check flight times carefully\, and if necessary arrange to stay in a hotel the night before the retreat or arrive early to ensure an on-time arrival at the retreat. Early-arrival accommodations on Monday August 21 are available with an additional fee. \nTO REGISTER: \nRegistration is now closed for this retreat.\nPlease use the online form at the link below to submit your registration and waiver forms. \n\nRegistration Form: https://www.imsb.org/form-ccrc2023/\n\nThis form will take approximately 20 minutes to fill out. Upon completion of the form you will receive an email with details for completing your payment. To register for a course\, you purchase one ticket\, which registers you for the entire class series. You only need to register once; you do not need to register separately for each class session. \nCourse Fee: The sliding scale fee range is from $200 to $600 and will be shared between IMSB and the teacher(s). The lower end of the sliding scale is intended for those with limited financial means. The low rate of $200 is estimated to cover only the basic expense of rent for the class period. This base rate does not factor in compensation for teachers or ongoing administrative expenses. If you pay at the mid to high range of the sliding scale\, your generosity supports those with limited income in attending our programs and also supports IMSB and the teachers. We encourage you to choose the highest level that is appropriate for your economic situation. \nDana/Donations: Donation baskets will be available at each event for drop-in guests and those who wish to offer additional donations to support the teachers and IMSB. Dana gifts are tax-deductible. \nScholarship Assistance: A scholarship rate of $100 is offered for those with very limited financial means. Donations above the base rate will be considered voluntary contributions and are tax deductible. Each January\, the IMSB treasurer sends donors letters that acknowledge donations of $250 and above in the previous year. This letter will serve as documentation for tax deduction purposes. \nCancellation Policy: All fees and payments are non-refundable. If you must cancel your participation in a course\, and the registrar is notified prior to the start of the first class meeting\, your registration fee will be converted into a voucher creditable towards the fee for a future event. Vouchers must be used within two years of the initial course start date\, and may be transferred to only one future course.
