SUMMARY:Weekly Meditation Group CANCELLED for Tonight
DESCRIPTION:Tonight’s meditation group meeting is cancelled.\nThe church requires use of our usual meeting room for their events. Our regular weekly meditation program will resume next week. \n\nInsight Meditation South Bay offers two weekly meditation groups— a drop in sitting group Tuesdays in Mountain View\, and a series of classes Thursdays in Saratoga. \nThis group meets every Tuesday evening for a sitting and Dhamma talk in Mountain View. The principal teacher is Shaila Catherine and guest speakers are featured regularly. Thematic series are periodically presented\, but whether or not a topic has been advertised in advance\, Shaila or a guest teacher will lead the sitting and offer teachings. See also weekly sitting. \nNewcomers are always welcome. To help newcomers get acquainted with mindfulness meditation and IMSB\, a senior member or teacher offers a beginner’s orientation beginning at 6:30 on the first Tuesday of each month. \nIMSB relies upon the generosity of participants to support our teachers and cover organizational expenses. Dana is a word in the ancient Pali language that describes donations\, offerings and generosity. Two bowls will be available at an event to practice dana for the teacher and IMSB; we encourage you to give joyfully and generously\, according to your resources and means. IMSB is a 501(c) (3) organization. All donations are tax deductible as permitted by law.

SUMMARY:Mindfulness in the World - A practice-based course
DESCRIPTION:Mindfulness In The World\nA Practice-Based Course led by Sharon Allen\, Jill Shepherd\, Jennifer Dungan\, and Bill Kostura. \nJanuary 25 – March 1\, 2018 \nLife in the world can be stressful – but you can do something about it. This six-week course will emphasize teachings and practices from Buddhism that can make the difference between increased stress and increased well-being in your interactions with the world. You’ll learn about bringing mindful awareness to daily life experiences – for example\, with family\, in the workplace\, and in broader social and cultural circles. Understanding the dynamic interplay between our inner awareness and our responses to experience is an important first step in life decisions. \nIf you value greater mental and physical balance\, clarity\, and ease of being\, this course is for you! \nSome previous meditation experience is useful but not required. This is a Level 2 course. \nClass content and practice skills will include: \n\nJanuary 25 – Mindful View: finding peace with impermanence and change – with Sharon Allen\nFebruary 1 – Mindful Intention: letting go of harmful states – with Sharon Allen and Bill Kostura\nFebruary 8 –Mindful Action: acting in ways that support peace of mind and avoiding harmful actions – with Sharon Allen\nFebruary 15 – Mindful Livelihood: working from a moral and ethical foundation – with Jennifer Dungan\nFebruary 22 – Mindful Compassion: caring for all\, because we all matter – with Jill Shepherd\nMarch 1 – Living in Balance – integrating mindfulness into your life for wisdom\, clarity\, and ease – with Sharon Allen\n\nClass format will include: \n\nMeditation instruction relevant to these themes\, with both guided and unguided practices\nTeachings on these themes\nWritten and experiential exercises and homework\nGroup discussion and interaction\, Q&A\n\nResources will include: \n\nGuidance and teachings from experienced mindfulness teachers\nWeekly written guidelines\nSutta references and practice links\n\nCOURSE LEVELS:\nThis course is open to all practitioners. It is designed as a level 2 course. Click this link for a key to course level designations. \nREGISTRATION:\nRegistration is required for this course. Registration will open two-three months prior to the start date of each course. Registration fees are non-refundable. To register select an option under the Tickets heading at the bottom of this page. If you are viewing this page more than two months in advance of the course\, the ticket feature may not have yet appeared\, so please check back later to register. \nThe sliding scale fee range is from $360 to $90 and will be shared between IMSB and the teacher(s). The lower end of the sliding scale is intended for those with limited means. The basic rate of $90 is estimated to cover the most basic costs such as rent and insurance for the specific class period. The base rate does not factor in compensation for teachers or ongoing administrative expenses for IMSB. The scholarship rate of $45 offers an even lower rate for those with very limited financial means. \nBy choosing to give at the mid to high range of the sliding scale your generosity supports those with limited income to attend our programs\, and it supports IMSB and the teachers\, enabling the dhamma to thrive in the South Bay Area. We encourage you to choose the highest level that is appropriate for your economic situation. If you need additional scholarship assistance and can volunteer to help\, please inquire with the registrar about service scholarships by contacting ThursdayClass. \nTicketing Tip: You may purchase series tickets on any day of the series. When you purchase a ticket you are registering for the entire class series. So you only need to register once. \nTAX DEDUCTIBILITY:\nThe basic registration fee is not tax deductible and non-refundable. Donations above the base rate will be considered voluntary tax deductible contributions. Each January the IMSB treasurer sends donors letters that acknowledge the accumulated deductible donations from the previous year. This annual letter will acknowledge the amount given that is above the basic rate and serve as documentation for tax deduction purposes. \nCANCELLATION POLICY:\nAll fees and payments are non-refundable. If it becomes necessary to cancel participation in a course\, and the registrar is notified prior to the start of the first class meeting\, your registration fee will be converted into a voucher creditable towards the fee for a future IMSB Thursday Class. Vouchers must be used within one year of the initial course start date\, and may be transferred to only one future course. Cancellations that occur after the start of the first class are not eligible for the voucher credit.

SUMMARY:Meditation and Teachings in Mountain View
DESCRIPTION:Due to the coronavirus concerns\, we have converted our Tuesday evening meeting to an online format. Insight Meditation South Bay offers two weekly meditation groups—Tuesdays evenings we offer an open drop-in sitting group in Mountain View\, and Thursdays we offer structured courses in Saratoga. The Tuesday sitting group meets every Tuesday evening for a meditation and Dhamma talk in Mountain View. The principal teacher is Shaila Catherine and guest speakers are featured regularly. Thematic series are periodically presented\, but whether or not a topic has been advertised in advance\, Shaila or a guest teacher will lead the sitting and offer teachings. See also weekly sitting. Newcomers are always welcome. To help newcomers get acquainted with mindfulness meditation and IMSB\, a senior member or teacher offers a beginner’s orientation beginning at 6:30 on the first Tuesday of each month. IMSB relies upon the generosity of participants to support our teachers and cover organizational expenses. \n

SUMMARY:Monthly Day of Meditation with Shaila Catherine
DESCRIPTION:A day of meditation with Shaila Catherine. \nNote: The location of this daylong event changed. It will now be held at Edward’s Hall of St. Timothy’s Church in Mountain View. \nIMSB offers a day of meditation one Saturday each month. These monthly day long programs offer a consistent and easy opportunity for meditators to maintain a steady commitment to meditation\, deepen their practice\, explore various dhamma themes\, and cultivate relationships with the community—and still be home in time for dinner! \nThe day long programs are usually structured with alternating sitting and walking meditations\, augmented by meditation instructions\, reflections\, and teachings. Shaila Catherine leads most of the day longs\, complimented by periodic guest teachers or community events. At most day long events\, Shaila is available for individual consultations. \nShaila offers teachings at each event\, usually aimed at developing meditative skills. Whether or not a theme is announced in advance\, teachings will be offered to deepen understanding of the Buddhist path of practice. \nThere will be a pot-luck community meal around 12:30; please bring a food dish to share. \nEveryone is welcome. There is no registration. Folding chairs are provided. Bring a mat and cushion if you prefer to sit on the floor. Beginner’s to meditation are encouraged to come on time since both sitting and walking meditation instruction are usually offered in the mornings. \nThese monthly events may take place at any of the churches where we meet—in Los Altos\, Saratoga\, or Mountain View. Be sure to double check the website event listing to determine the correct location. \nIMSB relies upon the generosity of participants to support our teachers and cover organizational expenses. Dana is a word in the ancient Pali language that describes donations\, offerings and generosity. SUMMARY:Annual New Year's Retreat in Texas with Shaila Catherine Dec 27 - Jan 1
DESCRIPTION:December 27\, 2017 – January 1\, 2018 \nRetreat Theme: Strategies for Overcoming Distracting Thoughts \nMental restlessness is an insidious and pervasive hindrance that all practitioners struggle to overcome. We can refine our skills for working with the modes of thinking that distract us from being mindful: critical thoughts\, planning\, worrying\, lustful thoughts\, judging\, memories\, internal commentaries\, to name a few. The teachings on this retreat will present a sequence of strategies for dealing with obstructive mental patterns; these instructions will follow two discourses taught by the Buddha and recorded in the Middle Length Discourses\, (suttas 19 and 20). Practitioners will be encouraged to develop a mindfulness-based meditation practice\, while exploring these strategies for overcoming distractions.\nThis retreat is suitable for both new and experienced practitioners. \nIt will be an insight meditation residential retreat at the Margaret Austin Center in Texas. It is mid-way between Austin and Houston. \nRegistration will open approximately 6 weeks prior to the start of the retreat. \nFor details visit the Mariposa Sangha website at:  https://mariposasangha.org/strategies-overcoming-distracting-thoughts-insight-meditation-retreat-shaila-catherine/

SUMMARY:De-Stress in December!
DESCRIPTION:De-Stress in December!\nA 5-week course on mindfulness meditation practices\n— to create peace in the holiday season and beyond. \nAs the year comes to an end\, night falls sooner\, and the holidays approach\, people sometimes feel increasingly stressed. Mindfulness practice helps us release the inner tensions that keep us entangled in unhealthy or unhappy physical and mental reactions. By letting go of stress and becoming more balanced\, contented\, and present with life\, we can relax through the holiday season and more fully enjoy its spirit of goodwill\, generosity\, and joy. \nNo previous meditation experience is necessary. \n\nDecember 07 — Mindfulness of breathing.\nFinding a place of rest in the here and now.\nDecember 14 — Mindfulness of sensations.\nBeing at ease with experiences as they occur.\nDecember 21 — Mindfulness of emotions.\nResponding with balance to all of life’s events.\nJanuary 04 — Mindfulness of thoughts.\nDisentangling your inner stories by becoming fully alive to the reality of this moment.\nNote: We will not meet December 28.\nJanuary 11 — Establishing Mindfulness\nIntegrating mindfulness in the reality of daily activities.\n\nLed by Shaila Catherine and Sharon Allen\nVisit our Teacher Page for teacher biographies and photographs. \nRegistration is now open. \nCOURSE LEVELS:\nThis course is designed as a level 1 course\, but it is open to all practitioners. Click this link for a key to course level designations. \nREGISTRATION:\nRegistration has opened and is required for this course. Registration fees are non-refundable. To register\, select an option under the Tickets heading at the bottom of this page. If you are viewing this page more than two months in advance of the course\, the ticket feature may not have yet appeared\, so please check back later to register. \nThe sliding scale fee range is from $310 to $85 and will be shared between IMSB and the teacher(s). The lower end of the sliding scale is intended for those with limited means. The basic rate of $85 is estimated to cover the most basic costs such as rent and insurance for the specific class period. It does not factor in compensation for teachers or ongoing administrative expenses for IMSB. The scholarship rate of $50 offers an even lower rate for those with very limited financial means. Vouchers must be used within one year of the initial course start date. Cancellations that occur after the start of the first class are not eligible for the voucher credit. \nTo redeem a voucher\, send an email to the registrar for the appropriate course and request to use your voucher credit as payment of the registration fees. If the voucher does not cover the base rate for the new class\, the balance will be due to complete the registration process. Credits vouchers can be transferred to only one future course.
