SUMMARY:Dynamic Awareness: A Day of Mindful Movement & Meditation with Shaila Catherine and Lisa Tromovitch
DESCRIPTION:A day of meditation and movement with Shaila Catherine and Lisa Tromovitch. \nIMSB offers a day of meditation one Saturday each month. These monthly day long programs offer a consistent and easy opportunity for meditators to maintain a steady commitment to meditation\, deepen their practice\, explore various dhamma themes\, and cultivate relationships with the community—and still be home in time for dinner! \nToday’s program is designed to enhance mindfulness through a combination of sitting meditation and mindful movement. The practices will encourage wakeful presence\, clarity of emotion\, and balance in body and mind. It is appropriate for beginners and seasoned practitioners. \nLisa Tromovitch will guide us in Laban Movement Analysis\, a non-biased language for describing movement that encourages a full exploration of our expressive range. By directing the mind inside and practicing detached observation\, one can become present with what is and develop a sense of community around a shared humanity. Shaila Catherine will lead the meditations. \n  \nThere will be a pot-luck community meal around 12:30; please bring a food dish to share. \nEveryone is welcome. There is no registration. Folding chairs are provided. Bring a mat and cushion if you prefer to sit on the floor. Beginner’s to meditation are encouraged to come on time since both sitting and walking meditation instruction are usually offered in the mornings. \nThese monthly events may take place at any of the churches where we meet—in Los Altos\, Saratoga\, or Mountain View. Be sure to double check the website event listing to determine the correct location. \nIMSB relies upon the generosity of participants to support our teachers and cover organizational expenses. Dana is a word in the ancient Pali language that describes donations\, offerings and generosity. Two bowls will be available at an event to practice dana for the teacher and IMSB; we encourage you to give joyfully and generously\, according to your resources and means. IMSB is a 501(c) (3) organization. All donations are tax deductible as permitted by law. \n

SUMMARY:Course: Mindful Speech
DESCRIPTION:Mindful Speech\nBringing clarity and peace to communication. \nA 6-week course led by Shaila Catherine\, Sharon Allen\, and Chris Clifford. \n\nMarch 15 — Defining Right And Wrong Speech\, with Sharon Allen\nMarch 22 — Difficult Communications; Responding to Anger\, with Shaila Catherine\nMarch 29 — No meeting this week. Church needs the room for their Easter events.\nApril 5 — What Is Worth Discussing\, with Chris Clifford\nApril 12 — Promoting Community Harmony\, with Sharon Allen\nApril 19 — Timely and Useful Speech\, with Shaila Catherine\nApril 26 — Where does the talk lead? with Shaila Catherine\n\nVisit our Teacher Page for teacher biographies and photographs. \nCourse Description: \nWords serve as the bridge between our inner thoughts and the world of interaction – once spoken\, words produce consequences for the speaker\, listener\, and community. Cultivating right speech as part of our mindfulness practice serves a dual purpose: it nurtures clarity\, understanding\, and harmony in relationships\, and it helps us investigate subtle intentions and mental patterns. \nThe Buddha placed a great deal of emphasis on speech—he incorporated Right Speech into the eight-fold path and addressed it in dozens of individual discourses. This six-week course will look at the teachings on speech that are preserved in the Discourses Of The Buddha. Weekly readings and home exercises will explore the role of speech on a spiritual path and help participants bring mindfulness and wisdom to daily conversations. \nWHO SHOULD JOIN: Some previous meditation experience would be helpful\, but not required. No background in sutta study is expected. \nCOURSE LEVELS:\nThis course is open to all practitioners. It is designed as a level 2 course. Click this link for a key to course level designations. \nREGISTRATION:\nRegistration is required for this course. Registration will open two-three months prior to the start date of each course. Registration fees are non-refundable. To register select an option under the Tickets heading at the bottom of this page. If you are viewing this page more than two months in advance of the course\, the ticket feature may not have yet appeared\, so please check back later to register. \nThe sliding scale fee range is from $360 to $90 and will be shared between IMSB and the teacher(s). The lower end of the sliding scale is intended for those with limited means. The basic rate of $90 is estimated to cover the most basic costs such as rent and insurance for the specific class period. The base rate does not factor in compensation for teachers or ongoing administrative expenses for IMSB. The scholarship rate of $45 offers an even lower rate for those with very limited financial means. \nBy choosing to give at the mid to high range of the sliding scale your generosity supports those with limited income to attend our programs\, and it supports IMSB and the teachers\, enabling the dhamma to thrive in the South Bay Area. We encourage you to choose the highest level that is appropriate for your economic situation. If you need additional scholarship assistance and can volunteer to help\, please inquire with the registrar about service scholarships by contacting ThursdayClass. \nTicketing Tip: You may purchase series tickets on any day of the series. When you purchase a ticket you are registering for the entire class series. So you only need to register once. \nTAX DEDUCTIBILITY:\nThe basic registration fee is not tax deductible and non-refundable. Donations above the base rate will be considered voluntary tax deductible contributions. Each January the IMSB treasurer sends donors letters that acknowledge the accumulated deductible donations from the previous year. This annual letter will acknowledge the amount given that is above the basic rate and serve as documentation for tax deduction purposes. \nCANCELLATION POLICY:\nAll fees and payments are non-refundable. If it becomes necessary to cancel participation in a course\, and the registrar is notified prior to the start of the first class meeting\, your registration fee will be converted into a voucher creditable towards the fee for a future IMSB Thursday Class. Vouchers must be used within one year of the initial course start date\, and may be transferred to only one future course. Cancellations that occur after the start of the first class are not eligible for the voucher credit.

SUMMARY:Study and Meditation Program on Distraction in Massachusetts
DESCRIPTION:Distraction: Strategies for Overcoming Distracting Thoughts\nMental restlessness is an insidious and pervasive hindrance that most practitioners struggle to overcome. We can refine our skills for working with the modes of thinking that distract us from being mindful and disrupt concentration: critical thoughts\, planning\, worrying\, lustful thoughts\, judging\, memories\, internal commentaries\, to name a few. This program will explore a sequence of strategies for dealing with obstructive mental patterns derived from two discourses taught by the Buddha (MN 19 and 20). The program will include sutta study\, discussion\, and meditation practice to gain experiential insight and meditative strategies for overcoming distractions. This retreat is suitable for both new and experienced practitioners. \nFor information and registration details\, visit https://www.bcbsdharma.org.

SUMMARY:Mindfulness in the World - A practice-based course
DESCRIPTION:Mindfulness In The World\nA Practice-Based Course led by Sharon Allen\, Jill Shepherd\, Jennifer Dungan\, and Bill Kostura. \nJanuary 25 – March 1\, 2018 \nLife in the world can be stressful – but you can do something about it. This six-week course will emphasize teachings and practices from Buddhism that can make the difference between increased stress and increased well-being in your interactions with the world. You’ll learn about bringing mindful awareness to daily life experiences – for example\, with family\, in the workplace\, and in broader social and cultural circles. Understanding the dynamic interplay between our inner awareness and our responses to experience is an important first step in life decisions. \nIf you value greater mental and physical balance\, clarity\, and ease of being\, this course is for you! \nSome previous meditation experience is useful but not required. This is a Level 2 course. \nClass content and practice skills will include: \n\nJanuary 25 – Mindful View: finding peace with impermanence and change – with Sharon Allen\nFebruary 1 – Mindful Intention: letting go of harmful states – with Sharon Allen and Bill Kostura\nFebruary 8 –Mindful Action: acting in ways that support peace of mind and avoiding harmful actions – with Sharon Allen\nFebruary 15 – Mindful Livelihood: working from a moral and ethical foundation – with Jennifer Dungan\nFebruary 22 – Mindful Compassion: caring for all\, because we all matter – with Jill Shepherd\nMarch 1 – Living in Balance – integrating mindfulness into your life for wisdom\, clarity\, and ease – with Sharon Allen\n\nClass format will include: \n\nMeditation instruction relevant to these themes\, with both guided and unguided practices\nTeachings on these themes\nWritten and experiential exercises and homework\nGroup discussion and interaction\, Q&A\n\nResources will include: \n\nGuidance and teachings from experienced mindfulness teachers\nWeekly written guidelines\nSutta references and practice links\n\nCOURSE LEVELS:\nThis course is open to all practitioners.

SUMMARY:Stepping Back: A Day of Meditation with Sharon Allen
DESCRIPTION:A day of Mindfulness Meditation with Sharon Allen. \nStepping back – so often when we are on the edge of impulsively saying or doing something that we later regret\, taking a step back\, pausing or remembering what that action leads to can make the difference between perpetuating distress or increasing well-being. This is a discipline that can be learned through practice. \nThis mindfulness meditation day long will provide an environment\, teachings\, and support to strengthen our wisdom of the benefit of pausing and stepping back from the precipice of reactive habits\, and\, therefore\, from guilt\, shame and remorse. \nThere are three primary ways we can step back. \n\nPause and breathe before giving into reactive habit patterns\nUse reflection and investigation as a tool for insight into how our actions either bring more distress or greater ease\nGive the mind more spaciousness by letting go\n\nThis day long is open to everyone\, but it is an ideal to reinforce the practices learned in the Mindfulness in the World six-week series that has been running on Thursday evenings this month. \nThere will be a pot-luck community meal around 12:30; please bring a food dish to share. \nFind teacher biographies and photos on our Teachers Page. \n\nIMSB offers a day of meditation one Saturday each month. These monthly day long programs offer a consistent and easy opportunity for meditators to maintain a steady commitment to meditation\, deepen their practice\, explore various dhamma themes\, and cultivate relationships with the community—and still be home in time for dinner! \nThe day long programs are usually structured with alternating sitting and walking meditations\, augmented by meditation instructions\, reflections\, and teachings. Shaila Catherine leads most of the day longs\, complimented by periodic guest teachers or community events.
