SUMMARY:Course: Mindful Self Esteem with Janetti Marotta
DESCRIPTION:Mindful Self-Esteem: Cultivating Self-Acceptance and Self-Compassion\nLed by Janetti Marotta\, Ph.D. \nA 6-week course based on the book 50 Mindful Steps to Self-Esteem: Everyday Practices for Cultivating Self-Acceptance & Self-Compassion \nLow self-esteem is such a common issue because we’re conditioned to look for comfort and security in outside factors that are constantly changing. We struggle to lock in a permanent stamp of approval that is unachievable. This “problem of self-esteem” is both a part of the human dilemma in general and at the center of Western culture in particular.  \nMindfulness shifts your perspective from outside-in to inside-out: self-worth arises by cultivating qualities that make it possible to embrace all parts of yourself\, just as you are. This cultivation invites your inherent worth or Buddha nature to come to the surface. From an open\, undefended position\, you’re able to be truly present for yourself\, others\, and the experience of life. \nAs you learn to accept that everything changes\, you recognize that success and failure wax and wane. When you begin to experience life as an unfolding process\, you loosen the confines created by defining yourself as “this or that.” As described in 50 Mindful Steps: “From a Buddhist perspective\, self-esteem can be defined as self without definition.” \nThis course will be taught through three sets of sequentially-based teachings\, exercises\, and practices: \n\nPractices to still the mind and calm the body (mindfulness of breath and body);\nPractices to cultivate self-acceptance (mindfulness of thoughts);\nPractices to cultivate self-compassion (mindfulness of emotions).\n\nFor biographies and photos of our teachers\, visit the Teacher’s Page. \nCOURSE LEVELS:\nThis course is open to all practitioners. It is designed as a level 2 course. Click this link for a key to course level designations. \nREGISTRATION:\nRegistration is required for this course. Registration will open two-three months prior to the start date of each course. Registration fees are non-refundable. To register select an option under the Tickets heading at the bottom of this page. If you are viewing this page more than two months in advance of the course\, the ticket feature may not have yet appeared\, so please check back later to register. \nThe sliding scale fee range is from $360 to $90 and will be shared between IMSB and the teacher(s). The lower end of the sliding scale is intended for those with limited means. The basic rate of $90 is estimated to cover the most basic costs such as rent and insurance for the specific class period. The base rate does not factor in compensation for teachers or ongoing administrative expenses for IMSB. The scholarship rate of $45 offers an even lower rate for those with very limited financial means. \nBy choosing to give at the mid to high range of the sliding scale your generosity supports those with limited income to attend our programs\, and it supports IMSB and the teachers\, enabling the dhamma to thrive in the South Bay Area. We encourage you to choose the highest level that is appropriate for your economic situation. If you need additional scholarship assistance and can volunteer to help\, please inquire with the registrar about service scholarships by contacting ThursdayClass. \nTicketing Tip: You may purchase series tickets on any day of the series. When you purchase a ticket you are registering for the entire class series. So you only need to register once. \nTAX DEDUCTIBILITY:\nThe basic registration fee is not tax deductible and non-refundable. Donations above the base rate will be considered voluntary tax deductible contributions. Each January the IMSB treasurer sends donors letters that acknowledge the accumulated deductible donations from the previous year. This annual letter will acknowledge the amount given that is above the basic rate and serve as documentation for tax deduction purposes. \nCANCELLATION POLICY:\nAll fees and payments are non-refundable. If it becomes necessary to cancel participation in a course\, and the registrar is notified prior to the start of the first class meeting\, your registration fee will be converted into a voucher creditable towards the fee for a future IMSB Thursday Class. Vouchers must be used within one year of the initial course start date\, and may be transferred to only one future course. Cancellations that occur after the start of the first class are not eligible for the voucher credit.

SUMMARY:A Day of Meditation in Germany with Shaila Catherine
DESCRIPTION:Resolution and Relaxation: Exploring the role of effort in meditation\nwith Shaila Catherine \nat Buddha’s Weg Retreat Center near Frankfurt\, Germany. \nThis day long program will explore the vital role that effort plays on the liberating path. We will see how a balanced\, wise and persistant effort can strengthen mindfulness. When our effort is balanced and clear — determined yet not forceful\, relaxed but not lax — then distracting thoughts will fade away and concentration and insight will deepen. \nThis day long program is appropriate for both beginners and advanced meditation students. \nFor more information and registration details please visit the Buddha’s Web website at: https://www.buddhasweg.eu/programm/aktuelle-programmuebersicht/juni-2018/1-day-long-retreat.html

SUMMARY:Author Event with James Coleman: The Buddha’s Dream of Liberation
DESCRIPTION:The Buddha’s Dream of Liberation: Freedom\, Emptiness\, and Awakened Nature\nAn evening author event with James William Coleman \nJames William Coleman’s new book\, The Buddha’s Dream of Liberation: Freedom\, Emptiness\, and Awakened Nature\, guides us through the profound wisdom of the classic sutras that lay the foundations for all of the different Buddhist traditions. In clear simple language\, it explores the three great “Turnings of the Wheel of Dharma.” In first turning of the wheel\, we gain insight into the nature of suffering—and the way out of it—from the four noble truths and the eightfold path. In the second turning\, we encounter the revolutionary teaching on emptiness that rocked the Buddhist world. The third turning resolves the apparent contradiction between the first and the second turnings\, and teaches us about the awakened buddha nature that is beyond all suffering and liberation. The book concludes with chapters from two great mediation teachers\, Reb Anderson Roshi and Lama Palden Drolma\, that show us how to bring those teachings into our practice and our daily lives. \nIn this evening program James Coleman will share teachings from his new book and guided meditations. The books will be available for purchase and you may ask the author to sign your copy before of after the program. \nPlease visit our Teachers Page for biographies and photos of our speakers. \n\nInsight Meditation South Bay offers two weekly meditation programs. Tuesdays we meet in Mountain View for our drop-in weekly program of meditation and teachings. Thursdays we meet in Saratoga for our Dhamma Classroom\, which offer a series of structured courses with registration\, and periodic drop-in practice events. \nToday’s group meets every Tuesday evening for a sitting and Dhamma talk in Mountain View. The principal teacher is Shaila Catherine and guest speakers are featured regularly. Thematic series are periodically presented\, but whether or not a topic has been advertised in advance\, Shaila or a guest teacher will lead the sitting and offer teachings. Two bowls will be available at an event to practice dana for the teacher and IMSB; we encourage you to give joyfully and generously\, according to your resources and means. DESCRIPTION:Retreats with Shaila at Buddha’s Weg near Frankfurt in Germany \n\nJune 3-8\, 2018 Shaila Catherine will lead a 5-night residential retreat \,\nJune 9\, 2018 Shaila will lead a day long that is open to the public along and the retreat participants \n\nFor details and registration information please follow these links to the Buddha’s Weg website. \nhttps://www.buddhasweg.eu/programm/aktuelle-programmuebersicht/juni-2018/intensive-meditation-retreat-with-shaila-catherine-from-usa.html \nhttps://www.buddhasweg.eu/programm/aktuelle-programmuebersicht/juni-2018/1-day-long-retreat.html \nResidential Retreat Theme: Strategies for Overcoming Distracting Thoughts\n\nMental restlessness is an insidious and pervasive hindrance that all practitioners struggle to overcome. We can refine our skills for working with the modes of thinking that distract us from being mindful: critical thoughts\, planning\, worrying\, lustful thoughts\, judging\, memories\, internal commentaries\, to name a few. The teachings on this retreat will present a sequence of strategies for dealing with obstructive mental patterns; these progressive instructions are found in two discourses in the Middle Length Discourses\, (suttas 19 and 20). Practitioners will be encouraged to develop a mindfulness-based meditation practice\, while exploring these strategies for overcoming distractions. \n\n Teachings will be given in English with translation into German as needed.\n\nPrerequisite: Participants should have some previous meditation experience. This requirement may be satisfied either by having attended at least one previous meditation retreat\, or by having an established daily meditation practice for at least six months.\n\nPreparation: Please read the following two discourses prior to the retreat. You may wish to bring a print out to the retreat for your personal reference. \n\nhttps://suttacentral.net/en/mn19\nhttps://suttacentral.net/en/mn20\n\n\nFor more information: \nhttps://www.buddhasweg.eu/programm/aktuelle-programmuebersicht/juni-2018/intensive-meditation-retreat-with-shaila-catherine-from-usa.html

SUMMARY:Speaker Series: Goals in Meditation
DESCRIPTION:We invited several local teachers to share both the personal aims that guide their practice and their understanding of the goals of the Buddhist Path. We asked them the following questions: \n\nWhat is the goal of Buddhist practice?\nWhat do you personally hope to achieve through your practice?\nWhat is a reasonable way to assess our progress – how can we tell if we are on track?\nHow can we work skillfully with goals in the context of mindfulness-based practices that emphasize present moment awareness?\n\nThis series will explore both the ultimate and relative goals of Buddhist practice. It will address the benefits and limitations of having goals\, and explore some related practice issues: comparing\, expectations\, craving for attainments\, inspiration\, and the potential for discouragement. \nJoin us for an illuminating look into some aspects of your practice you may never have considered! \nApril 24 – Shaila Catherine – Commitment to Awakening and the Heartwood Simile \nMay 1 – Kim Allen – Nurturing the Process \nMay 8 – Andrea Fella – Cooling the Fire \nMay 15 – Tony Bernhard – Not Making Things Worse \nMay 22 – Dawn Neal –Milestones or Millstones on the Eightfold Path to Freedom? Assessing Practice Skillfully \nMay 29 – Community Wesak Celebration will include reflections on goals. See also weekly sitting. \nNewcomers are always welcome. To help newcomers get acquainted with mindfulness meditation and IMSB\, a senior member or teacher offers a beginner’s orientation beginning at 6:30 on the first Tuesday of each month. \nIMSB relies upon the generosity of participants to support our teachers and cover organizational expenses. Dana is a word in the ancient Pali language that describes donations\, offerings and generosity. Two bowls will be available at an event to practice dana for the teacher and IMSB; we encourage you to give joyfully and generously\, according to your resources and means. IMSB is a 501(c) (3) organization. All donations are tax deductible as permitted by law.

SUMMARY:Aging\, Dying and Awakening: A Day of Meditation with Anna Douglas
DESCRIPTION:A day of meditation with special guest teacher Anna Douglas. \n“Aging\, illness and death are treasures for those who understand them. They are Noble Truths\, Noble Treasures. If they were people\, I’d bow down to their feet every day.”\n— Ajahn Lee\, Thai Forest Master \nThis sentiment is not our culture’s usual attitude\, so this statement may sound jarring\, or even distasteful. But as we ourselves grow old\, it may begin to make sense. In fact much of the Buddha’s teaching becomes much more relevant as we age. Impermanence\, emptiness of self\, the suffering of wanting things to be different — all reveal themselves more clearly as the truth of aging takes hold in our very own body. And it is not all bad news: in the midst of these intimations of our mortality\, something else emerges — we may resonate with the words of Martin Luther King: “You can’t choose when you will die or how you will die\, but you can choose what you give your life to.” Dr. King lived this truth. He knew very clearly what his mission was\, what mattered to him more than life itself. What do we choose to give our lives to? Paradoxically\, we may discover that remembering our mortality is indeed vital to putting us in touch with our best and truest self. \nJoin a group of practitioners who are interested in seeing aging as a process which offers opportunity for loosening our fears and deepening in wisdom and compassion. The day will include silent sitting as well as Dharma teachings\, interactive exercises\, and discussion. \nThere will be a pot-luck community meal around 12:30; please bring a food dish to share. \nFind teacher biographies and photos on our Teachers Page. \n\nIMSB offers a day of meditation one Saturday each month. These monthly day long programs offer a consistent and easy opportunity for meditators to maintain a steady commitment to meditation\, deepen their practice\, explore various dhamma themes\, and cultivate relationships with the community—and still be home in time for dinner! \nThe day long programs are usually structured with alternating sitting and walking meditations\, augmented by meditation instructions\, reflections\, and teachings. Shaila Catherine leads most of the day longs\, complimented by periodic guest teachers or community events. \nThere will be a pot-luck community meal around 12:30; please bring a food dish to share. \nEveryone is welcome. There is no registration. Folding chairs are provided. Bring a mat and cushion if you prefer to sit on the floor. Beginner’s to meditation are encouraged to come on time since both sitting and walking meditation instruction are usually offered in the mornings. \nThese monthly events may take place at any of the churches where we meet—in Los Altos\, Saratoga\, or Mountain View. Be sure to double check the website event listing to determine the correct location. \nIMSB relies upon the generosity of participants to support our teachers and cover organizational expenses. Dana is a word in the ancient Pali language that describes donations\, offerings and generosity.

SUMMARY:Insight Meditation Retreat in Israel with Shaila Catherine - May 16-22
DESCRIPTION:Shaila Catherine will lead an Insight Meditation retreat in Israel May 16-22\, 2018. \n\nTheme: Strategies for Overcoming Distracting Thoughts\n\n\nMental restlessness is an insidious and pervasive hindrance that all practitioners struggle to overcome. This retreat is suitable for both new and experienced practitioners.\n\nPreparation: Please read the following two discourses prior to the retreat. You may wish to bring a print out to the retreat for your personal reference. \n\nhttps://suttacentral.net/en/mn19\nhttps://suttacentral.net/en/mn20\n\n\n\nFor more information visit the Tovana website at: https://tovana.org.il

SUMMARY:Meditation and Teachings in Mountain View
DESCRIPTION:Due to the coronavirus concerns\, we have converted our Tuesday evening meeting to an online format. Insight Meditation South Bay offers two weekly meditation groups—Tuesdays evenings we offer an open drop-in sitting group in Mountain View\, and Thursdays we offer structured courses in Saratoga. The Tuesday sitting group meets every Tuesday evening for a meditation and Dhamma talk in Mountain View. The principal teacher is Shaila Catherine and guest speakers are featured regularly. Thematic series are periodically presented\, but whether or not a topic has been advertised in advance\, Shaila or a guest teacher will lead the sitting and offer teachings. See also weekly sitting. Newcomers are always welcome. To help newcomers get acquainted with mindfulness meditation and IMSB\, a senior member or teacher offers a beginner’s orientation beginning at 6:30 on the first Tuesday of each month. IMSB relies upon the generosity of participants to support our teachers and cover organizational expenses. \n

SUMMARY:Insight Retreat in the Netherlands with Shaila Catherine - May 4-14
DESCRIPTION:Insight Meditation Retreat\nTheme: Strategies for Overcoming Distracting Thoughts\nMental restlessness is an insidious and pervasive hindrance that all practitioners struggle to overcome. \nPrerequisite: Participants must have some previous insight meditation experience. This requirement may be satisfied either by having attended at least one insight meditation retreat of five days or longer\, or by having an established daily meditation practice of mindfulness or insight meditation for more than one year. \nAttendance Requirement: Participants are asked to arrive at the start of the retreat\, and depart at the end of the retreat. Please do not register for this retreat if you expect to arrive late or depart early. Fees are based on the full retreat; if a situation arises that requires an early departure\, fees will not be reduced or refunded. \nPreparation: Please read the following two discourses prior to the retreat. You may wish to bring a print out to the retreat for your personal reference. \n\nhttps://suttacentral.net/en/mn19\nhttps://suttacentral.net/en/mn20\n\nLocation: This retreat will take place in Loenen\, which is in central part of Netherlands. See the Sangha-Metta website for details about retreat\, location\, registration\, and fees. \nhttps://www.sanghametta.nl/index.php/programma-en-activiteiten/english-retreats/380-shaila-catherine-2018-english
