SUMMARY:Day of meditation with Shaila - in Hanover\, NH
DESCRIPTION:Shaila Catherine will offer a day-long retreat in Hanover\, NH. \nTheme: The Art of Not-Clinging \nThis daylong program will highlight the subtle dynamics of clinging and not-clinging as we practice the art of letting go. The Buddha described four kinds of clinging: 1) clinging to sensual pleasures\, 2) to views and opinions\, 3) to rituals and observances\, and 4) to the concept of self. Meditators may use these four categories to focus their investigation of attachment. Practices of generosity\, contentment\, relaxation\, mindfulness\, and concentration support the experience and expression of not-clinging. The day will include sitting and walking meditation and teachings. It is appropriate for both new and experienced practitioners. \nVisit the Valley Insight Meditation Society website for details: https://valleyinsight.org

SUMMARY:Meditation and Teachings in Mountain View
DESCRIPTION:Due to the coronavirus concerns\, we have converted our Tuesday evening meeting to an online format. Insight Meditation South Bay offers two weekly meditation groups—Tuesdays evenings we offer an open drop-in sitting group in Mountain View\, and Thursdays we offer structured courses in Saratoga. The Tuesday sitting group meets every Tuesday evening for a meditation and Dhamma talk in Mountain View. The principal teacher is Shaila Catherine and guest speakers are featured regularly. Thematic series are periodically presented\, but whether or not a topic has been advertised in advance\, Shaila or a guest teacher will lead the sitting and offer teachings. See also weekly sitting. Newcomers are always welcome. To help newcomers get acquainted with mindfulness meditation and IMSB\, a senior member or teacher offers a beginner’s orientation beginning at 6:30 on the first Tuesday of each month. IMSB relies upon the generosity of participants to support our teachers and cover organizational expenses. Dana is a word in the ancient Pali language that describes donations\, offerings and generosity. Two bowls will be available at an event to practice dana for the teacher and IMSB; we encourage you to give joyfully and generously\, according to your resources and means. IMSB is a 501(c) (3) organization. All donations are tax deductible as permitted by law. \n

Each evening includes silent or guided meditation\, a break\, and teachings. \n\nPlease visit our Teachers Page for biographies and photos of our speakers. \nInsight Meditation South Bay offers two weekly meditation programs. On Tuesdays\, we meet in Mountain View for our drop-in weekly program of meditation and teachings.  On Thursdays\, we meet in Saratoga for our Dhamma Classroom\, which offer a series of structured courses with registration\, and periodic drop-in practice events. \nOur Tuesday evening program usually includes a sitting meditation and Dhamma talk. The principal teacher is Shaila Catherine and guest speakers are featured regularly. Thematic series are periodically presented\, but whether or not a topic has been advertised in advance\, Shaila or a guest teacher will lead the sitting and offer teachings. See also weekly sitting. \nNewcomers are always welcome. To help newcomers get acquainted with mindfulness meditation and IMSB\, a senior member or teacher offers a beginner’s orientation beginning at 6:30 on the first Tuesday of each month. \nIMSB relies upon the generosity of participants to support our teachers and cover organizational expenses. Dana is a word in the ancient Pali language that describes donations\, offerings and generosity. Two bowls will be available at an event to practice dana for the teacher and IMSB. We encourage you to give joyfully and generously\, according to your resources and means. SUMMARY:Monthly Day of Meditation led by Shaila Catherine
DESCRIPTION:A day of meditation with Shaila Catherine.\nIMSB offers a day of meditation one Saturday each month. These monthly day long programs offer a consistent and easy opportunity for meditators to maintain a steady commitment to meditation\, deepen their practice\, explore various dhamma themes\, and cultivate relationships with the community—and still be home in time for dinner! \nThe day long programs are usually structured with alternating sitting and walking meditations\, augmented by meditation instructions\, reflections\, and teachings. Shaila Catherine leads most of the day longs\, complimented by periodic guest teachers or community events. At most day long events\, Shaila is available for individual consultations. \nShaila offers teachings at each event\, usually aimed at developing meditative skills. Whether or not a theme is announced in advance\, teachings will be offered to deepen understanding of the Buddhist path of practice. \nThere will be a pot-luck community meal around 12:30; please bring a food dish to share. \nEveryone is welcome. There is no registration. Folding chairs are provided. Bring a mat and cushion if you prefer to sit on the floor. Beginner’s to meditation are encouraged to come on time since both sitting and walking meditation instruction are usually offered in the mornings. \nThese monthly events may take place at any of the churches where we meet—in Los Altos\, Saratoga\, or Mountain View. Be sure to double check the website event listing to determine the correct location. \nIMSB relies upon the generosity of participants to support our teachers and cover organizational expenses. Dana is a word in the ancient Pali language that describes donations\, offerings and generosity. Two bowls will be available at an event to practice dana for the teacher and IMSB; we encourage you to give joyfully and generously\, according to your resources and means. SUMMARY:Concentration and Jhana Factors - California Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Cultivating Concentration and the Jhana Factors\nA 10-day retreat with Shaila Catherine\nTuesday\, February 18 – Friday February 28\, 2020.\nPartial attendance can be arranged but must start on the first day of the retreat. \nDon’t wait! Scroll down to register now!\nRegistration closes February 1. \nThis ten-day residential retreat will utilize mindfulness of breathing (anapanasati) and loving-kindness (metta) to cultivate concentration. The instructions will emphasize developing five factors that intensify focused attention and characterize the blissful states of meditative absorption known as jhana. The five factors are applied attention\, sustained attention\, joy\, happiness\, and one-pointedness of mind. Although these are called the Five Jhana Factors\, they are not exclusive to jhana states. The teachings on this retreat will provide practical instructions for developing and balancing these factors; distinguishing between the jhana factors and the states of jhana absorption; and examining the powerful role that concentration plays on the path of awakening. \nDaily group instructions will explore mindfulness with breathing (anapanasati) and loving-kindness (metta). Group and one-to-one guidance will tailor the practices to meet the needs and interests of individual students. \nThis silent retreat is structured with alternating periods of sitting and walking meditation\, dhamma teachings\, and teacher consultations. It will provide an ideal occasion for nurturing serenity and calmness\, and introducing the basics of jhana practice. No previous jhana experience is required\, however\, this retreat is intended for meditators who already have an established mindfulness based practice\, and have previously attended at least one multi-day silent residential retreat. \nPrior to the retreat\, please read the first 11 chapters of Focused and Fearless by Shaila Catherine. \nSITE BENEFITS: This retreat will be held at Redwood Glen\, a lovely retreat center nestled in a redwood forest between La Honda and Pescadero. It’s about a 15-minute drive from Pescadero State Beach\, and about a 1-hour drive from either the San Francisco Airport or the San Jose Airport. This retreat center is convenient to reach\, and yet offers a secluded and intimate environment for deep meditation practice. You will enjoy the benefits of natural beauty\, a spacious meditation hall\, comfortable accommodations\, delicious meals\, and access to walking trails. The center is nestled in a majestic redwood forest\, adjacent to county parks and open space preserves. Just a few minutes’ walk from the meditation hall you will find yourself strolling along creek side paths\, surrounded by the powerful serenity of the redwood forest. \nRegister now! Space is limited. \nWe keep this retreat small (under 36 participants) to enable in-depth guidance from Shaila. \nThe retreat begins with registration at 2:00 pm on Tuesday\, February 18; it ends with noon lunch on Friday\, February 28. Participants who are traveling from afar might need to check flight times carefully\, and if necessary arrange to stay in a hotel the night before the retreat. Early-arrival accommodations are not available at this retreat center\, and we must depart shortly after lunch on the closing day. \nTO REGISTER: Download and complete the RG2020 registration and waiver forms\, enclose a non-refundable deposit of $250 (payable to Bodhi Retreats)\, and return the registration and waiver forms via email and/or postal mail to the address below. We are not currently accepting credit card transactions\, so please send your registration deposit and fees via check or money order made payable to Bodhi Retreats. If this is not possible for some of our international guests\, please contact the registrar for alternative payment arrangements. \nRobin Boudette\n26 Zion Road\nHopewell NJ 08525\nUnited States \nretreatregistration \n\nRG2020_Registration_Fillable_Form\nRG2020_Registration_Standard-Printable_Form\nRG2020_Waiver-of-Liability\n\nThe retreat facility is somewhat handicapped accessible. Accommodations include comfortable hotel-style rooms with attached baths\, and a few dorm-style cabins. See the application form for accommodation details. \nCOST: 10 nights including accommodation and meals. \n\nDouble occupancy sliding scale: $1800 – $1250 (estimated actual cost is $1600)\nSingle occupancy sliding scale: $2800 – $1850 (estimated actual cost is $2300)\n\nSelecting an amount above the middle of each sliding scale range will support the retreat and enable those who need to select a lower rate to attend the retreat. Selecting an amount below the middle of the sliding scale self-selects a supported scholarship rate. The mid-point of each sliding scale represents the amount that we would have charged to cover costs for accommodations\, food\, and basic administrative expenses if we had used a fixed rate instead of a sliding scale. Our estimated actual costs for double accommodations is $1600\, and for single accommodations it is $2300. \nInquire with the registrar if you need additional scholarship support to attend. \nPARTIAL ATTENDANCE: Partial attendance may be arranged for a stay of 3-6 nights. Priority will be given to full retreat registration. Partial attendees will likely be housed in double occupancy rooms. Singles accommodations will not be reserved in advance for partial attendees. \n\n3 nights (Tuesday–Friday) is $900 – $550 sliding scale\n4 nights (Tuesday–Saturday) is $1\,100 – $675 sliding scale\n5 nights (Tuesday–Sunday) is $1\,300 – $800 sliding scale\n6 nights (Tuesday–Monday) is $1\,500-$950 sliding scale\n\nContact the registrar for details about partial attendance. \nDANA: Compensation for the teacher is not included in the registration price. There will be an opportunity to offer donations to the teacher at the end of the retreat. \nCo-Sponsored by Bodhi Retreats and Insight Meditation South Bay

To register for a course\, you purchase one ticket\, which registers you for the entire class series. You only need to register once; you do not need to register separately for each class session. \nCourse Fee: The sliding scale fee range is from $360 to $90 and will be shared between IMSB and the teacher(s). The lower end of the sliding scale is intended for those with limited financial means. The low rate of $90 is estimated to cover the most basic costs such as rent and insurance for the specific class period. This base rate does not factor in compensation for teachers or ongoing administrative expenses for IMSB. If you pay at the mid to high range of the sliding scale\, your generosity supports those with limited income in attending our programs and also supports IMSB and the teachers\, enabling the dhamma to thrive in the South Bay area. We encourage you to choose the highest level that is appropriate for your economic situation. \nScholarship Assistance: A scholarship rate of $45 is offered for those with very limited financial means. Donations above the base rate will be considered voluntary contributions and are deductible for any amount that is over the base rate. Each January\, the IMSB treasurer sends donors letters that acknowledge the amount given for the previous year that is above the basic rate; this serves as documentation for tax deduction purposes. \nCancellation Policy: All fees and payments are non-refundable. If it becomes necessary to cancel participation in a course\, and the registrar is notified prior to the start of the first class meeting\, your registration fee will be converted into a voucher creditable towards the fee for a future IMSB Thursday class. Vouchers must be used within one year of the initial course start date\, and may be transferred to only one future course. Cancellations that occur after the start of the first class are not eligible for the voucher credit.

SUMMARY:Online Course: Satipatthana. Mindfulness for Experienced Meditators
DESCRIPTION:Due to the coronavirus concerns\, we have converted our Thursday evening Satipatthana Course into an online format starting March 19. \nREGISTRATION HAS CLOSED.  \nSatipatthana:\nMindfulness for Experienced Meditators\nAn ONLINE 8-week course led by Shaila Catherine and Sharon Allen \nA practical training leading to the final goal. \nThursdays\, March 5 – April 30\, 2020\n5:30 pm to 7:30 pm (PDT) \nTHE FOUR ESTABLISHMENTS OF MINDFULNESS (Satipatthana) offer practical methods for developing mindfulness of body\, feelings\, and mind. This 8-week course will explore each of the primary Satipatthana practices that are emphasized in early Buddhist sources. Our explorations will follow Bhikkhu Analayo’s book\, Satipatthana Meditation: A Practice Guide. Supported by recorded guided meditations by Bhikkhu Analayo\, and online discussions led by Shaila Catherine and Sharon Allen\, this class will help participants embody and explore this traditional path to liberation. \nSHAILA CATHERINE brings a unique perspective to Satipatthana practice. She has explored Satipatthana for decades\, and has co-taught four retreats with Bhikkhu Analayo since 2014. Her deep love of meditation\, extensive experience with mindfulness practices\, and familiarity with Analayo’s teachings will create a rare opportunity for experienced meditators to expand and deepen their mindfulness meditation practices. \n\nMarch 5: Chapters 1-2 Mindfulness and Satipatthana\, with Shaila Catherine\nMarch 12: Chapter 3 Meditations on Anatomy\, with Shaila Catherine\n\nDue to the coronavirus we have moved our course online beginning March 19. We will use a conference call platform called Uberconference. Uberconference provides reliable and easy audio conferencing that you can access via computer or phone. There is no need to download software or create accounts. More information will be provided in the confirmation materials after registering.  \n\nMarch 19: Chapter 4 Meditations on Elements\, with Shaila Catherine\nMarch 26: Chapter 5 Meditations on Death\, with Shaila Catherine\nApril 2: Catch Up Discussion for those who joined the online course. The discussion will include an introduction to Satipatthana and all three exercises related to Mindfulness of Body (Anatomy\, Elements\, and Death).\nApril 9: Chapter 6 Meditations on Feeling\, with Sharon Allen\nApril 16: Chapter 7 Meditations on Mind\, with Shaila Catherine\nApril 23: Chapter 8 Meditations on Hindrances\, with Shaila Catherine\nApril 30: Chapter 9 Meditations on Factors of Awakening\, with Shaila Catherine\n\nWHO SHOULD JOIN: This course is intended for experienced mindfulness meditation practitioners. \nCOURSE LEVELS: It is designed as a level 2-3 course. Click this link for a key to course level designations. \nREQUIRED BOOK: Satipatthana Meditation: A Practice Guide\, By Bhikkhu Analayo\, published by Windhorse Publications. ISBN 978-1-911407-10-2 \n\nVisit our Teacher Page for teacher biographies and photographs. \nREGISTRATION: Registration is required for this course. Registration fees are non-refundable. To register\, select an option under the Tickets heading at the bottom of this page. (If you are viewing this page more than two months in advance of the course\, the Tickets heading might not yet appear\, so please check again later.) To register for a course\, you purchase one ticket\, which registers you for the entire class series. You only need to register once; you do not need to register separately for each class session. \nCourse Fee: The sliding scale fee range is from $440 to $150 and will be shared between IMSB and the teacher(s). The lower end of the sliding scale is intended for those with limited financial means. The low rate of $150 is estimated to cover the most basic costs such as rent and insurance for the specific class period. \nScholarship Assistance: A scholarship rate of $65 is offered for those with very limited financial means. If you need additional assistance\, or if you would like to volunteer to help out\, please inquire with the registrar by contacting ThursdayClass. \nTax Deductions: The basic registration fee is not tax deductible.
