SUMMARY:Focused and Fearless: A Concentration Course
DESCRIPTION:Cultivating the conditions for deep concentration in the midst of daily life \nA six-week course led by Shaila Catherine and Sharon Allen \nAugust 22 – September 26\, 2019\n7:15 pm to 9:00 pm\nSilence begins at 7:00.\nArrive early (around 7:00) to enjoy the optional pre-class meditation period. \nThis six-week course is designed to strengthen the conditions that make the mind conducive to concentration. We will refine our concentration using practical techniques to help us reduce distraction\, anxiety and stress. We will also clarify the experiences and qualities that arise with the deep meditation states known as jhāna and samādhi. \nThis course will include sitting meditation\, readings\, and discussion\, and will follow the early chapters of Focused and Fearless\, our primary course text. \nRequired Reading: Focused and Fearless: A Meditator’s Guide To States of Deep Joy\, Calm\, and Clarity\, by Shaila Catherine \nAugust 22 – Creating Conducive Conditions led by Sharon Allen\nAugust 29 – Joy of Seclusion led by Dawn Neal\nSeptember 5 – Pleasure and Happiness led by Sharon Allen\nSeptember 12 – Equanimity and Balance led by Dawn Neal\nSeptember 19 – Intensifying Factors led by Ying Chen\nSeptember 26 – Transformation of the Object\, Access and Absorption led by Shaila Catherine\nOctober 3 – Bonus Class—Mindfulness Meditation: A drop-in evening for meditation practice led by Janetti Marotta \nSamadhi is the beautiful state of an undistracted mind\, described in the Pali texts as “internally steadied\, composed\, unified\, and concentrated.” \n— Shaila Catherine\, Focused and Fearless\, page 3 \nWHO SHOULD JOIN: This course is open to all practitioners. \nCOURSE LEVELS: This is designed as a level 1-2 course. Click this link for a key to course level designations. \n\nVisit our Teacher Page for teacher biographies and photographs. \nREGISTRATION: Registration is required for this course. Registration fees are non-refundable. To register\, select an option under the Tickets heading at the bottom of this page. (If you are viewing this page more than two months in advance of the course\, the Tickets heading might not yet appear\, so please check again later.) To register for a course\, you purchase one ticket\, which registers you for the entire class series. You only need to register once; you do not need to register separately for each class session. \nCourse Fee: The sliding scale fee range is from $360 to $90 and will be shared between IMSB and the teacher(s). The lower end of the sliding scale is intended for those with limited financial means. The low rate of $90 is estimated to cover the most basic costs such as rent and insurance for the specific class period. This base rate does not factor in compensation for teachers or ongoing administrative expenses for IMSB. If you pay at the mid to high range of the sliding scale\, your generosity supports those with limited income in attending our programs and also supports IMSB and the teachers\, enabling the dhamma to thrive in the South Bay area. We encourage you to choose the highest level that is appropriate for your economic situation. \nScholarship Assistance: A scholarship rate of $45 is offered for those with very limited financial means. If you need additional assistance\, or if you would like to volunteer to help out\, please inquire with the registrar by contacting ThursdayClass. \nTax Deductions: The basic registration fee is not tax deductible. Donations above the base rate will be considered voluntary contributions and are deductible for any amount that is over the base rate. Each January\, the IMSB treasurer sends donors letters that acknowledge the amount given for the previous year that is above the basic rate; this serves as documentation for tax deduction purposes. \nCancellation Policy: All fees and payments are non-refundable. If it becomes necessary to cancel participation in a course\, and the registrar is notified prior to the start of the first class meeting\, your registration fee will be converted into a voucher creditable towards the fee for a future IMSB Thursday class. Vouchers must be used within one year of the initial course start date\, and may be transferred to only one future course. Cancellations that occur after the start of the first class are not eligible for the voucher credit.

SUMMARY:Concentration\, Jhana\, and Breath: 9-night Retreat in North Carolina
DESCRIPTION:THIS RETREAT IS FULL. REGISRATION HAS CLOSED. \nConcentration\, Jhana\, and Breath:\na 9-night Meditation Retreat in North Carolina\nled by Shaila Catherine\nFriday\, October 4\, 2019 – Sunday\, October 13\, 2019 \nThe retreat begins with registration from 2:00 – 3:30 pm on Friday\, October 4. The retreat ends at 11:00 am on Sunday\, October 13. To accommodate travel needs\, participants may arrange to arrive Thursday\, October 3 or stay until October 14. \nPartial attendance can be arranged\, but it must begin on the first day of the retreat\, and priority will be given to those registering for the full retreat. \nThis retreat will utilize the breath as the primary meditation object and will encourage the development of meditative skills that lead to deep concentration (samadhi) and insight (vipassana). Daily group instructions will focus on the sixteen steps in the Anapanasati Sutta as a route to jhana and/or liberating insight. One-to-one guidance will tailor the practices to meet the needs and interests of individual students. Some students may choose to emphasize concentration practice throughout the retreat; others may emphasize vipassana; and some may practice both concentration and insight in-conjunction with mindfulness of breathing. \nThis retreat offers a special opportunity to train in concentration and jhana practices with personal guidance from Shaila Catherine. It is one of the very few retreats each year in which Shaila systematically guides students to establish jhana by working step-by-step with the Anapanasati Sutta. Students who wish to embark on this training in concentration and jhana should read her book Focused and Fearless prior to the retreat. See our Concentration and Jhana FAQ page for more information about developing concentration and the absorption states of jhana. \nThis silent retreat is structured with alternating periods of sitting and walking meditation\, dhamma teachings\, and teacher consultations. \nPrior to the retreat\, please read Focused and Fearless by Shaila Catherine\, and the Ananpanasati Sutta. You may download the sutta at: https://suttacentral.net/mn118/en/bodhi \nRegister early! Space is limited.\nWe keep this retreat small (not more than about 40 participants) to enable in-depth guidance from Shaila. We have exclusive use of the retreat center for the duration of our program to support a silent and deep experience of meditation. \nTO REGISTER: Complete the HW2019 registration and waiver forms. Send them along with a non-refundable deposit of $250 (payable to Bodhi-Retreats) to the registrar (address below). The waiver and check must be sent by mail. You may send the registration form by mail or email. We are not currently accepting credit card transactions\, so please send your registration deposit and fees via check or money order made payable to Bodhi Retreats. If this is not possible for some of our international guests\, please contact the registrar for alternative payment arrangements. \nKatrina Bergbauer\n225 Second Avenue\nDecatur\, GA 30030 \nretreats \nPlease complete either the Standard-Printable or Form-Fillable form\, and also the Waiver of Liability.\nImportant: If you use the form-fillable version\, download the form to your computer first. Then fill out the form. After completing the form\, select to print it\, and in the print options select to save the form as a PDF file. Then mail or email the PDF to the registrar. \n\nHW2019_Registration_Form_StandardPrintable\nHW2019_Registration_Form_Fillable\nHW2019_Waiver-of-Liability\n\nRequirements: The retreat is designed for experienced students. Previous retreat experience in the insight meditation tradition is required\, with a minimum of at least two week-long silent residential retreats. If you have attended less than two week-long silent retreats\, your attendance requires approval from the teacher. \nACCOMMODATIONS: Heartwood Retreat is tucked away in a quiet lake community in the beautiful Blue Ridge mountains of western North Carolina. \nThe retreat facility is handicapped accessible\, but if you have mobility limitations\, please contact our retreat registrar for details. \nPlease note that this will be a non-smoking retreat. \nHeartwood Refuge has modest\, hotel-style rooms. All rooms are designed as doubles with ensuite bathrooms. We can negotiate with the center to utilize some rooms as singles\, but that will require leaving beds unoccupied; therefore\, if you request single accommodations without a medical need\, and if you are financially able\, please choose a registration fee amount that is on the upper end of the sliding scale ($2250 – $1700). If you request a single room\, please explain why you need it\, citing your medical needs\, sleep disorders\, or preferences in the space provided on the registration form. \nCOST: 9 nights (includes accommodation and meals) is $2250 – $1150 sliding scale\, plus a donation to the teachers at the end of retreat. The estimated actual per-person cost for this retreat (if we used a fixed rate) is $1700. By selecting an amount above $1700\, your generosity supports those who need to select a lower rate to attend the retreat. This sliding scale will allow most scholarship needs to be managed by self-selecting an amount lower than $1700. \nAdditional nights for early arrival or late departure: $100 per extra night. \nPartial retreat option registration fees are below. Priority will be given to students who are registering for the full 9-nights course. \n\n2 nights (Friday–Sunday) is $700 – $400 sliding scale\n3 nights (Friday–Monday) is $900 – $550 sliding scale\n4 nights (Friday–Tueday) is $1100 – $675 sliding scale\n5 nights (Friday–Wednesday) is $1300 – $800 sliding scale\n6 nights (Friday–Thursday) is $1500 – $950 sliding scale\n\nDANA: Compensation for the teacher is not included in the registration price. There will be an opportunity to offer donations to the teacher at the end of the retreat. \nCo-sponsored by Bodhi-Retreats and Insight Meditation South Bay

SUMMARY:Meditation and Teachings in Mountain View
DESCRIPTION:Due to the coronavirus concerns\, we have converted our Tuesday evening meeting to an online format. Insight Meditation South Bay offers two weekly meditation groups—Tuesdays evenings we offer an open drop-in sitting group in Mountain View\, and Thursdays we offer structured courses in Saratoga. The Tuesday sitting group meets every Tuesday evening for a meditation and Dhamma talk in Mountain View. The principal teacher is Shaila Catherine and guest speakers are featured regularly. Thematic series are periodically presented\, but whether or not a topic has been advertised in advance\, Shaila or a guest teacher will lead the sitting and offer teachings. See also weekly sitting. Newcomers are always welcome. To help newcomers get acquainted with mindfulness meditation and IMSB\, a senior member or teacher offers a beginner’s orientation beginning at 6:30 on the first Tuesday of each month. IMSB relies upon the generosity of participants to support our teachers and cover organizational expenses. Dana is a word in the ancient Pali language that describes donations\, offerings and generosity. Two bowls will be available at an event to practice dana for the teacher and IMSB; we encourage you to give joyfully and generously\, according to your resources and means. SUMMARY:Monthly Day of Meditation led by Shaila Catherine
DESCRIPTION:A day of meditation with Shaila Catherine.\nIMSB offers a day of meditation one Saturday each month. These monthly day long programs offer a consistent and easy opportunity for meditators to maintain a steady commitment to meditation\, deepen their practice\, explore various dhamma themes\, and cultivate relationships with the community—and still be home in time for dinner! \nThe day long programs are usually structured with alternating sitting and walking meditations\, augmented by meditation instructions\, reflections\, and teachings. Shaila Catherine leads most of the day longs\, complimented by periodic guest teachers or community events. At most day long events\, Shaila is available for individual consultations. \nShaila offers teachings at each event\, usually aimed at developing meditative skills. Whether or not a theme is announced in advance\, teachings will be offered to deepen understanding of the Buddhist path of practice. \nThere will be a pot-luck community meal around 12:30; please bring a food dish to share. \nEveryone is welcome. There is no registration. Folding chairs are provided. Bring a mat and cushion if you prefer to sit on the floor. Beginner’s to meditation are encouraged to come on time since both sitting and walking meditation instruction are usually offered in the mornings. \nThese monthly events may take place at any of the churches where we meet—in Los Altos\, Saratoga\, or Mountain View. Be sure to double check the website event listing to determine the correct location. \nIMSB relies upon the generosity of participants to support our teachers and cover organizational expenses. Dana is a word in the ancient Pali language that describes donations\, offerings and generosity. Two bowls will be available at an event to practice dana for the teacher and IMSB; we encourage you to give joyfully and generously\, according to your resources and means. IMSB is a 501(c) (3) organization. All donations are tax deductible as permitted by law.

SUMMARY:Guest Teacher Jon Joseph on The Great Koan No!
DESCRIPTION:Tonight’s guest speaker is Jon Joseph.\nTopic: The Great Koan No: An Invitation to Establish Intimacy With Our World\nKoans are ancient accounts of exchanges between teachers\, students and their surroundings\, which have some mysterious power to provide us with an invitation for freedom and transformation. In the Zen tradition\, the most fundamental of the gateway koans is just this No. “Does a dog have Buddha Nature\, or not?”\, asked a student of the teacher\, and the teacher simply replied “No.” No\, as a koan\, has no shade of meaning ~ negative\, positive\, or neutral ~ and because it has no meaning\, it has the power to make us free. To rediscover again and again the intimacy we have always enjoyed with our universe\, but have not always appreciated.\n\nAbout Jon Joseph:\nJon Joseph\, Roshi is the practice leader of San Mateo Zen (www.sanmateozen.org)\, and holding teacher for Desert Lotus Zen (www.desertlotuszen.org) in Phoenix. He began sitting Zen over 40 years ago with a group of high school friends\, led by their Spanish teacher. Jon then took his practice to the logging camps and fishing villages of Alaska and to the redwoods of California’s North Coast. After college\, Jon traveled to Kamakura\, Japan\, where he studied for eight years with Yamada Koun Roshi at the SanUn Zendo. In the late 1980s\, Jon returned to San Francisco and New York as a technology financial analyst\, and took up koan practice with John Tarrant\, Roshi\, the founder of Pacific Zen Institute (www.pacficzen.org). Tarrant Roshi (Bring Me the Rhinoceros) and Pacific Zen have become known for their innovative use of the ancient koans to transform our lives in the present world. In 2012 Tarrant Roshi gave Jon permission to teach. In 2016 Jon received full transmission.\n\nFor bios and pictures of our guest teachers visit our Teacher Page.\n\nInsight Meditation South Bay offers two weekly meditation groups—Tuesdays evenings we offer an open drop-in sitting group in Mountain View\, and Thursdays we offer structured courses in Saratoga. \nThe Tuesday sitting group meets every Tuesday evening for a meditation and Dhamma talk in Mountain View. The principal teacher is Shaila Catherine and guest speakers are featured regularly. Thematic series are periodically presented\, but whether or not a topic has been advertised in advance\, Shaila or a guest teacher will lead the sitting and offer teachings. See also weekly sitting. \nNewcomers are always welcome. To help newcomers get acquainted with mindfulness meditation and IMSB\, a senior member or teacher offers a beginner’s orientation beginning at 6:30 on the first Tuesday of each month.

IMSB is a 501(c) (3) organization. All donations are tax deductible as permitted by law. \n
