SUMMARY:Emptiness in Buddhist Practice—Online
DESCRIPTION:Emptiness in Buddhist Practice—Online\nAn 8-week course led by Shaila Catherine \nMondays Online via Zoom\nDecember 7\, 14\, 21\, January 4\, 11\, February 1\, 8\, 15\n4:30 – 6:00 PM Pacific Time \nTeachings on emptiness point directly to the liberating potential of the Buddhist path. Although this topic may sometimes seem obscure in the context of modern lay life\, it is worthy of deep reflection and study. The Buddha urged his disciples to apply their minds to understand the teachings on emptiness. The experience of emptiness is so central to his message in fact\, that on one occasion he warned that the dhamma will disappear from this world if people do not lend an ear to the teachings that “are deep\, deep in meaning\, supramundane\, dealing with emptiness.” \nThis course is structured as a discussion of the book authored by Guy Armstrong titled “Emptiness: A Practical Guide for Meditators.” Shaila Catherine will lead guided meditations and discussions to facilitate a profound contemplation of emptiness. Together we will explore a variety of meditation practices that illuminate the insubstantial void nature of experience and incline the mind toward a direct realization of emptiness. \n\nDecember 7 — The World is Empty of Self — Chapters 1 & 2\nDecember 14 — What is Real? — Chapters 3 & 4\nDecember 21 — How We Create A Sense of Self — Chapter 5\nJanuary 4 — Beyond Self — Chapters 6\, 7 & 8\nJanuary 11 — Karma: Who Acts? — Chapters 9 & 10\nFebruary 1 — The End of Karma\, Abiding in Emptiness\, Cessation\, Nibbana — Chapters 11\, 12 & 13\nFebruary 8 — All Phenomena are Empty — Chapters 14\, 15 & 16\nFebruary 15 — The Empty Nature of Awareness. Compassion — Chapters 17 – 21\n\nREQUIRED BOOK: Emptiness: A Practical Guide for Meditators\, by Guy Armstrong\, published by Wisdom Publications. Paperback: ISBN 9781614295266. E-book: ISBN 9781614293798 \nWHO SHOULD JOIN: This course is open to all practitioners\, however\, it is designed for those who have already had an introduction to mindfulness meditation practices. \nCOURSE LEVELS: It is designed as a level 2 course. Click this link for a key to course level designations. \nPRECAUTIONS FOR IN-PERSON MEETINGS: The in-person meetings will be limited to a maximum of 20 participants. We will meet in a large sanctuary that under normal circumstances would seat 250. Your temperature will be taken before entering\, face masks that cover the nose and mouth are required\, and social distancing will be practiced. Please bring a sweater\, shawl\, or lap blanket to keep warm since we will increase ventilation by cracking open the doors. \nABOUT ONLINE MEETINGS: A Zoom link will be provided after registration. \nTO REGISTER: Go to NEW COURSE: Emptiness in Buddhist Practice for how to register.

SUMMARY:Tuesday Online—Rodger Kamenetz—The Medicine in Dreams: Healing "Afflictive States of Mind"
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday Online—Rodger Kamenetz—The Medicine in Dreams: Healing “Afflictive States of Mind”\nwith Rodger Kamenetz \nDecember 15\, 2020 \nThis talk will address afflictive states of mind and how they present themselves in images in our dreams. In Natural Dreamwork we do not interpret dreams\, we bring them to life. Instead of approaching dreams as riddles to be solved we treat the dream as an opportunity for deep feeling and sacred encounter. This helps us distinguish genuine feelings from reactive states. We will practice a contemplation of images. You are invited to bring recent dreams of your own to the discussion. \nDue to the coronavirus concerns\, we are holding our Tuesday meetings online.  \nPlease join us on Zoom. This event is appropriate for newcomers as well as experienced practitioners. The evening includes silent or guided meditation and teachings. \nTakes place on Zoom! \nJoin the Zoom Meeting\nWe now require you enter the Zoom passcode to join the meeting. \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/88266320362 \nMeeting ID: 882 6632 0362\nPasscode: metta4all \nOne tap mobile\n+16699006833\,\,88266320362# US (San Jose)\n+12532158782\,\,88266320362# US (Tacoma) \nDial by your location\n+1 669 900 6833 US (San Jose)\n+1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma)\n+1 346 248 7799 US (Houston)\n+1 929 205 6099 US (New York)\n+1 301 715 8592 US (Germantown)\n+1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago)\nMeeting ID: 882 6632 0362\nFind your local number: https://us02web.zoom.us/u/kcSiCSJ1bl \n\nTEACHERS: Please visit our Teachers Page for biographies and photos of our speakers. \nTUESDAYS ONLINE: Due to coronavirus concerns\, we have converted our Tuesday evening meeting to an online format with teachings offered by Shaila Catherine and an array of guest teachers. This online group meets 6:30 – 8:00 PM Pacific Time\, which makes it possible for local members to join us after their workday\, and for East Coast friends to sit with us before bed. \nEveryone is welcome. Please share this event with your friends. \nDANA/DONATIONS: IMSB relies upon the generosity of participants to support our teachers and cover organizational expenses that continue whether we are meeting in-person or online. Dana is a word in the ancient Pali language that describes donations\, offerings and generosity. We encourage you to give joyfully and generously\, according to your resources and means. IMSB is a 501(c) (3) organization. All donations are tax deductible as permitted by law. \nPlease support our programs and teachers with your donations. We especially encourage recurring monthly donations to help us through these difficult months of the pandemic. Donations can be made through our Donation Page. Recurring donations can be made through Network for Good or PayPal. \nFUTURE IN-PERSON GATHERINGS: When it is wise to do so\, Insight Meditation South Bay anticipates continuing our program of two weekly meditation programs. On Tuesdays\, we meet in Mountain View for our drop-in weekly program of meditation and teachings. Our Tuesday evening program usually includes a sitting meditation and Dhamma talk. The principal teacher is Shaila Catherine and guest speakers are featured regularly. Thematic series are periodically presented\, but whether or not a topic has been advertised in advance\, Shaila or a guest teacher will lead the sitting and offer teachings. On Thursdays\, we meet in Saratoga for our Dhamma Classroom\, for a series of structured courses with registration\, and periodic drop-in practice events.

SUMMARY:Course: Effort and Ease
DESCRIPTION:Balancing Effort and Ease in Meditation and in Life\nA 6-week course led by Shaila Catherine and _______________ \nDeveloping the energies that transform and awaken the mind! \nThursdays\, November 5 – December 17\, 2020\n7:15 pm to 9:00 pm\nSilence begins at 7:00. Arrive early (around 7:00) to enjoy the optional pre-class meditation period. \nRight effort – balancing energy and ease – supports the development of mindfulness\, concentration\, and insight. By learning to use our energies effectively\, we overcome obstacles\, transform mental habits\, open to a fresh and free way of engaging with experience\, and cultivate beautiful qualities that incline the mind toward profound peace. \nThis course will explore effort with an emphasis on the four modes of “right striving” described in the Sammappadhāna Samyutta\, The Connected Discourses on Right Striving (SN 49.1). This brief teaching presents a flexible four-part approach to refining and balancing energy that is relevant to formal meditation practice\, and can help us to skillfully meet the demands of daily life. \n\nNovember 5: Introducing Mindfulness and Effort: A Balanced Approach\nNovember 12: Effort to Protect\nNovember 19: Effort to Free\nNovember 26: No class tonight. Enjoy the Thanksgiving Holiday!\nDecember 3: Effort to Cultivate\nDecember 11: Effort to Maintain\nDecember 17: Reflections on Skillful Effort\, Confidence\, and Relaxation\n\nWHO SHOULD JOIN: This course is open to all practitioners. \nCOURSE LEVELS: It is designed as a level 1 course. Click this link for a key to course level designations. \n\nVisit our Teacher Page for teacher biographies and photographs. \nREGISTRATION: Registration is required for this course. Registration fees are non-refundable. To register\, select an option under the Tickets heading at the bottom of this page. (If you are viewing this page more than two months in advance of the course\, the Tickets heading might not yet appear\, so please check again later.) To register for a course\, you purchase one ticket\, which registers you for the entire class series. You only need to register once; you do not need to register separately for each class session. \nCourse Fee: The sliding scale fee range is from $360 to $120 and will be shared between IMSB and the teacher(s). The lower end of the sliding scale is intended for those with limited financial means. The low rate of $120 is estimated to cover the most basic costs such as rent and insurance for the specific class period. This base rate does not factor in compensation for teachers or ongoing administrative expenses for IMSB. If you pay at the mid to high range of the sliding scale\, your generosity supports those with limited income in attending our programs and also supports IMSB and the teachers\, enabling the dhamma to thrive in the South Bay area. We encourage you to choose the highest level that is appropriate for your economic situation. \nScholarship Assistance: A scholarship rate of $50 is offered for those with very limited financial means. If you need additional assistance\, or if you would like to volunteer to help out\, please inquire with the registrar by contacting ThursdayClass. \nTax Deductions: The basic registration fee is not tax deductible. Donations above the base rate will be considered voluntary contributions and are deductible for any amount that is over the base rate. Each January\, the IMSB treasurer sends donors letters that acknowledge the amount given for the previous year that is above the basic rate; this serves as documentation for tax deduction purposes. \nCancellation Policy: All fees and payments are non-refundable. If it becomes necessary to cancel participation in a course\, and the registrar is notified prior to the start of the first class meeting\, your registration fee will be converted into a voucher creditable towards the fee for a future IMSB Thursday class. Vouchers must be used within one year of the initial course start date\, and may be transferred to only one future course. Cancellations that occur after the start of the first class are not eligible for the voucher credit.

SUMMARY:Tuesday Online—Kim Allen—Speech from the Heart
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday Online—Kim Allen—Speech from the Heart\nan evening of meditation and teaching \nwith Kim Allen \nJanuary 19\, 2021 \nFrom where does speech originate? How does our speech feed back to affect our own heart (in addition to other people)? These are worthy investigations in Buddhist practice. Speech ties back to the three unwholesome roots of greed\, hatred\, and delusion\, as well as the three wholesome roots of non-greed\, non-hatred\, and non-delusion. Our choices in this realm have a major impact. At a time when the quality of public discourse is very low\, we can endeavor to speak in ways that are true\, unifying\, heartfelt\, and beneficial. \nPlease join us on Zoom. SUMMARY:Tuesday Online—Robin Boudette—Finding Freedom from Habitual Patterns
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday Online—Robin Boudette—Finding Freedom from Habitual Patterns\nan evening of meditation and teaching \nwith Robin Boudette \nFebruary 2\, 2021 \nIn the chaos of our everyday lives\, we often run on auto-pilot finding ourselves caught in unhealthy habit patterns. In our attempts to help ourselves\, we might watch too much news\, plan for every possible situation\, reach for our favorite comfort food or engage in other unhealthy behaviors\, unwittingly feeding our anxiety and making things worse. Fortunately\, mindfulness provides practices and skills that can help us change unhealthy habits and live in greater harmony with life. But how? The Buddha taught that disenchantment is key. In this evening session\, we will explore self-reflections to illuminate habit loops and explore how we can tap into the direct experience of disenchantment. The taste of disenchantment opens the space to let go\, without effort. We can develop the mind’s propensity to form habits to strengthen wholesome states and wise action and transform the roots of suffering. \nRecommended reading:  Judson Brewer\, MD\, PhD.\, The Craving Mind: From Cigarettes to Smartphones to Love – Why We Get Hooked and how We Can Break Bad Habits \nDana from this event will be offered to Southern Comfort Animal Rescue\, a small rescue in rural Georgia where there are no other resources for homeless dogs.\nSouthern Comfort Animal Rescue\, 1484 N. SUMMARY:Tuesday Online—Dawn Scott—Biological Imperatives for Freedom
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday Online—Dawn Scott—Biological Imperatives for Freedom\nan evening meditation and teaching \nwith Dawn Scott \nMarch 2\, 2021 \nAt times\, the aspirations of the biological imperative for freedom and the reactivity of the biological imperative to avoid pain can feel as if they are at cross-purposes. SUMMARY:Online Course - Developing Clarity; Discovering Mindfulness
DESCRIPTION:Developing Clarity; Discovering Mindfulness\nA training for living freely and wisely\nA 6-session ONLINE course with Shaila Catherine and Kim Allen\nThursdays\, March 18 – May 27\, 2021 \nThis course will introduce mindfulness meditation in the context of three primary trainings of the Buddhist path: ethical conduct\, mental development\, and discerning wisdom.  \nInstructions and guided meditations will teach how to cultivate mindfulness of breath\, sensations\, emotions\, thoughts and actions. Mindfulness refines our ability to focus attention\, balance energy\, remove distraction\, and develop clarity regarding all aspects of life. This series will include exercises that enhance mindfulness\, support the establishment of a daily meditation practice\, and highlight clarity in work\, relationships\, and daily activities.  \nThe course is designed with beginning and intermediate level practitioners in mind\, but would be appropriate for anyone seeking to refine fundamental meditation techniques and strengthen their daily practice. The course will meet every other week\, providing time for each participant to establish a strong daily at-home meditation practice.  \nClasses will include meditation\, teachings\, Q&A\, and discussion. Recordings of guided meditations will provide support between sessions. \n\nMarch 18 – Why Meditate? The benefits of mindfulness for a liberating path and happy life (Kim)\nApril 1 – Developing Concentration: The power of mindfulness with breathing (Shaila)\nApril 15 – Cultivating Presence: Mindfulness of the body\, on and off the cushion (Kim)\nApril 29 – Emotional Awareness: Mindfulness of mental states (Shaila)\nMay 13 – Calming the Restless Mind: Mindfulness of thoughts (Kim)\nMay 27 – Clearing the Path: Mindfulness of hindrances and intentions\, and making practice one’s own (Shaila)\n\nVIDEO CONFERENCES: We will use the Zoom video conference platform. Zoom is easy to access via computer or phone. More information will be provided in the confirmation materials after registering. \n\nVisit our Teacher Page for teacher biographies and photographs. \nREGISTRATION: Registration is required for this course. Registration fees are non-refundable. To register\, select an option under the Tickets heading at the bottom of this page. To register for a course\, you purchase one ticket\, which registers you for the entire class series. You only need to register once; you do not need to register separately for each class session.  \nCOURSE FEE: The sliding scale fee range is from $600 to $150 and includes registration fees and teacher dana. The lower end of the sliding scale is intended for those with limited financial means. The low rate of $150 is a basic administrative fee and does not include teacher dana. We encourage you to choose the highest level that is appropriate for your economic situation. By choosing to pay at the mid to high range of the sliding scale\, your generosity helps those with limited income to attend our programs\, and provides support for our teachers. \nSCHOLARSHIP ASSISTANCE: A limited number of scholarships at the rate of $75 are available for those with very limited financial means. To request this 50% discounted scholarship rate\, please inquire with the registrar prior to selecting a ticket by contacting ThursdayClass. The registrar will send recipients of scholarships a coupon code that will lower the base rate by half during the registration process.
