SUMMARY:Emptiness in Buddhist Practice—Online
DESCRIPTION:Emptiness in Buddhist Practice—Online\nAn 8-week course led by Shaila Catherine \nMondays Online via Zoom\nDecember 7\, 14\, 21\, January 4\, 11\, February 1\, 8\, 15\n4:30 – 6:00 PM Pacific Time \nTeachings on emptiness point directly to the liberating potential of the Buddhist path. Although this topic may sometimes seem obscure in the context of modern lay life\, it is worthy of deep reflection and study. The Buddha urged his disciples to apply their minds to understand the teachings on emptiness. The experience of emptiness is so central to his message in fact\, that on one occasion he warned that the dhamma will disappear from this world if people do not lend an ear to the teachings that “are deep\, deep in meaning\, supramundane\, dealing with emptiness.” \nThis course is structured as a discussion of the book authored by Guy Armstrong titled “Emptiness: A Practical Guide for Meditators.” Shaila Catherine will lead guided meditations and discussions to facilitate a profound contemplation of emptiness. Together we will explore a variety of meditation practices that illuminate the insubstantial void nature of experience and incline the mind toward a direct realization of emptiness. \n\nDecember 7 — The World is Empty of Self — Chapters 1 & 2\nDecember 14 — What is Real? — Chapters 3 & 4\nDecember 21 — How We Create A Sense of Self — Chapter 5\nJanuary 4 — Beyond Self — Chapters 6\, 7 & 8\nJanuary 11 — Karma: Who Acts? — Chapters 9 & 10\nFebruary 1 — The End of Karma\, Abiding in Emptiness\, Cessation\, Nibbana — Chapters 11\, 12 & 13\nFebruary 8 — All Phenomena are Empty — Chapters 14\, 15 & 16\nFebruary 15 — The Empty Nature of Awareness. Compassion — Chapters 17 – 21\n\nREQUIRED BOOK: Emptiness: A Practical Guide for Meditators\, by Guy Armstrong\, published by Wisdom Publications. Paperback: ISBN 9781614295266. E-book: ISBN 9781614293798 \nWHO SHOULD JOIN: This course is open to all practitioners\, however\, it is designed for those who have already had an introduction to mindfulness meditation practices. \nCOURSE LEVELS: It is designed as a level 2 course. Click this link for a key to course level designations. \nPRECAUTIONS FOR IN-PERSON MEETINGS: The in-person meetings will be limited to a maximum of 20 participants. We will meet in a large sanctuary that under normal circumstances would seat 250. Your temperature will be taken before entering\, face masks that cover the nose and mouth are required\, and social distancing will be practiced. Please bring a sweater\, shawl\, or lap blanket to keep warm since we will increase ventilation by cracking open the doors. \nABOUT ONLINE MEETINGS: A Zoom link will be provided after registration. \nTO REGISTER: Go to NEW COURSE: Emptiness in Buddhist Practice for how to register.

SUMMARY:Tuesday Online—Robin Boudette—Finding Freedom from Habitual Patterns
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday Online—Robin Boudette—Finding Freedom from Habitual Patterns\nan evening of meditation and teaching \nwith Robin Boudette \nFebruary 2\, 2021 \nIn the chaos of our everyday lives\, we often run on auto-pilot finding ourselves caught in unhealthy habit patterns. In our attempts to help ourselves\, we might watch too much news\, plan for every possible situation\, reach for our favorite comfort food or engage in other unhealthy behaviors\, unwittingly feeding our anxiety and making things worse. Fortunately\, mindfulness provides practices and skills that can help us change unhealthy habits and live in greater harmony with life. But how? The Buddha taught that disenchantment is key. In this evening session\, we will explore self-reflections to illuminate habit loops and explore how we can tap into the direct experience of disenchantment. The taste of disenchantment opens the space to let go\, without effort. We can develop the mind’s propensity to form habits to strengthen wholesome states and wise action and transform the roots of suffering. \nRecommended reading:  Judson Brewer\, MD\, PhD.\, The Craving Mind: From Cigarettes to Smartphones to Love – Why We Get Hooked and how We Can Break Bad Habits \nDana from this event will be offered to Southern Comfort Animal Rescue\, a small rescue in rural Georgia where there are no other resources for homeless dogs.\nSouthern Comfort Animal Rescue\, 1484 N. SUMMARY:Online Course - Developing Clarity; Discovering Mindfulness
DESCRIPTION:Developing Clarity; Discovering Mindfulness\nA training for living freely and wisely\nA 6-session ONLINE course with Shaila Catherine and Kim Allen\nThursdays\, March 18 – May 27\, 2021 \nThis course will introduce mindfulness meditation in the context of three primary trainings of the Buddhist path: ethical conduct\, mental development\, and discerning wisdom.  \nInstructions and guided meditations will teach how to cultivate mindfulness of breath\, sensations\, emotions\, thoughts and actions. Mindfulness refines our ability to focus attention\, balance energy\, remove distraction\, and develop clarity regarding all aspects of life. This series will include exercises that enhance mindfulness\, support the establishment of a daily meditation practice\, and highlight clarity in work\, relationships\, and daily activities.  \nThe course is designed with beginning and intermediate level practitioners in mind\, but would be appropriate for anyone seeking to refine fundamental meditation techniques and strengthen their daily practice. The course will meet every other week\, providing time for each participant to establish a strong daily at-home meditation practice.  \nClasses will include meditation\, teachings\, Q&A\, and discussion. Recordings of guided meditations will provide support between sessions. \n\nMarch 18 – Why Meditate? The benefits of mindfulness for a liberating path and happy life (Kim)\nApril 1 – Developing Concentration: The power of mindfulness with breathing (Shaila)\nApril 15 – Cultivating Presence: Mindfulness of the body\, on and off the cushion (Kim)\nApril 29 – Emotional Awareness: Mindfulness of mental states (Shaila)\nMay 13 – Calming the Restless Mind: Mindfulness of thoughts (Kim)\nMay 27 – Clearing the Path: Mindfulness of hindrances and intentions\, and making practice one’s own (Shaila)\n\nVIDEO CONFERENCES: We will use the Zoom video conference platform. Zoom is easy to access via computer or phone. More information will be provided in the confirmation materials after registering. \n\nVisit our Teacher Page for teacher biographies and photographs. \nREGISTRATION: Registration is required for this course. Registration fees are non-refundable. To register\, select an option under the Tickets heading at the bottom of this page. To register for a course\, you purchase one ticket\, which registers you for the entire class series. You only need to register once; you do not need to register separately for each class session.  \nCOURSE FEE: The sliding scale fee range is from $600 to $150 and includes registration fees and teacher dana. The lower end of the sliding scale is intended for those with limited financial means. The low rate of $150 is a basic administrative fee and does not include teacher dana. We encourage you to choose the highest level that is appropriate for your economic situation. By choosing to pay at the mid to high range of the sliding scale\, your generosity helps those with limited income to attend our programs\, and provides support for our teachers. \nSCHOLARSHIP ASSISTANCE: A limited number of scholarships at the rate of $75 are available for those with very limited financial means. To request this 50% discounted scholarship rate\, please inquire with the registrar prior to selecting a ticket by contacting ThursdayClass. The registrar will send recipients of scholarships a coupon code that will lower the base rate by half during the registration process. \nTAX DEDUCTIONS: The basic registration fee is not tax deductible. Donations above the base rate will be considered voluntary contributions and are deductible for any amount that is over the base rate. Each January\, the IMSB treasurer sends donors letters that acknowledge the amount given for the previous year that is above the basic rate; this serves as documentation for tax deduction purposes. \nCANCELLATION POLICY: All fees and payments are non-refundable. If it becomes necessary to cancel participation in a course\, and the registrar is notified prior to the start of the first class meeting\, your registration fee will be converted into a voucher creditable towards the fee for a future IMSB Thursday class. Vouchers must be used within one year of the initial course start date\, and may be transferred to only one future course. Cancellations that occur after the start of the first class are not eligible for the voucher credit.

SUMMARY:Tuesday Online—Shaila Catherine—Refraining from Intoxication
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday Online—Shaila Catherine—Refraining from Intoxication\nan evening of meditation and teaching \nwith Shaila Catherine \nApril 6\, 2021 \nTonight’s talk will explore the fifth precept—the commitment to refrain from intoxicating the mind through the use of alcohol\, drugs\, or addictive desires. Originally this precept highlighted the dangers of home-brewed alcohol but can be expanded to address the many ways we may seek to excite\, dull\, distort\, or intoxicate our minds. By working with this precept\, we not only strengthen our capacity for restraint but importantly\, we investigate how the force of craving may be affecting our decisions and actions. \nPlease join us on Zoom. How can we find the fulfillment we always seem to be seeking but never seem to fully realize? Who are we? Meditation brings us closer to that process of creation and shows us how to participate in it\, in ways that are often unexpected\, rewarding\, and even fun. \nPlease join us on Zoom.

SUMMARY:Beyond Distraction - Retreat in California
DESCRIPTION:Due to the current shelter-in-place orders\, we have moved the retreat that was previously scheduled for January\, to new dates: May 4-14\, 2021.  \nThis retreat is open for registration! \nThis will be a very special retreat—a rare opportunity to practice with seclusion and intimacy. We will  limit attendance\, wear masks indoors\, increase ventilation\, practice social distancing\, have daily temperature checks and self-scheduled practice periods. We believe the site of Redwood Glen offers a responsible place for a small group retreat. There are private rooms with ensuite private baths\, an enormous dining hall and also outdoor seating in a beautiful Redwood forest. Even with our precautions\, any gathering will involve some degree of risk\, so we leave it to your good judgement to determine if this opportunity is appropriate for you.\nPlease review the preventative measures taken by the center\, our new guidelines for reducing the spread of the coronavirus\, and comments from students who attended our recent retreat in Georgia in September 2020.\n\nCOVID_Information-And-Guidelines_RedwoodGlen2021\nCOVID_Participant Quotes\n\nBeyond Distraction: Overcoming Distracting Thoughts\nA 10-day meditation retreat with Shaila Catherine\nTuesday\, May 4 – Friday May 14\, 2021.\nPartial attendance can be arranged but must start on the first day of the retreat. \nMental restlessness is an insidious and pervasive hindrance that most practitioners struggle to overcome. We can refine our skills for working with the modes of thinking that distract us from being mindful: critical thoughts\, planning\, worrying\, lustful thoughts\, judging\, memories\, internal commentaries\, to name a few. The teachings on this retreat will present a sequence of strategies for dealing with obstructive mental patterns; these progressive instructions are found in two discourses in the Middle Length Discourses (suttas 19 and 20). Practitioners will be encouraged to develop a mindfulness-based meditation practice\, while exploring these strategies. The practice can free the mind from habitual distractions\, nurture calm\, concentration\, and jhana\, and incline toward a liberating understanding of emptiness. \nThis retreat is suitable for practitioners of any level\, providing you have attended at least one prior silent residential retreat. \nPreparation: Please read the following two discourses prior to the retreat. You may wish to bring a print out to the retreat for your personal reference. \n\nhttps://suttacentral.net/mn19/en/bodhi\nhttps://suttacentral.net/mn20/en/bodhi\n\nDaily group instructions will explore a multitude of ways to work with thoughts. Group and one-to-one guidance will tailor the practices to meet the needs and interests of individual students. \nThis silent retreat is structured with alternating periods of sitting and walking meditation\, dhamma teachings\, and teacher consultations. It will provide an ideal occasion for nurturing serenity and calmness\, removing distracting thoughts\, and inclining the mind toward a liberating realization of emptiness. This retreat is intended for meditators who already have an established mindfulness based practice\, and have previously attended at least one multi-day silent residential retreat. Students will be expected to practice a mindfulness-based approach to meditation practice. \nSITE FEATURES: This retreat will be held at Redwood Glen\, a lovely retreat center nestled in a redwood forest between La Honda and Pescadero. It’s about a 15-minute drive from Pescadero State Beach\, and about a 1-hour drive from either the San Francisco Airport or the San Jose Airport. This retreat center is convenient to reach\, and yet offers a secluded and intimate environment for deep meditation practice. You will enjoy the benefits of natural beauty\, a spacious meditation hall\, comfortable accommodations\, delicious meals\, and access to walking trails. The center is nestled in a majestic redwood forest\, adjacent to county parks and open space preserves. Just a few minutes’ walk from the meditation hall you will find yourself strolling along creek side paths\, surrounded by the powerful serenity of the redwood forest. \nRegister now! Space is limited. \nWe usually keep this retreat small (under 36 participants) to enable in-depth guidance from Shaila. To increase social distancing due to the pandemic\, we are limiting attendance to 24 participants. \nThe retreat begins with registration at 2:00 pm on Tuesday\, May 4; it ends with an optional noon lunch on Friday\, May 14. Participants who are traveling from afar might need to check flight times carefully\, and if necessary arrange to stay in a hotel the night before the retreat. Early-arrival accommodations are not available at this retreat center\, and we must depart shortly after lunch on the closing day. \nTO REGISTER: Please use the online form at the link below to submit your registration and waiver forms. \n\nLink to registration form: https://www.imsb.org/RG2021/\n\nThis form will take approximately 20 minutes to fill out. Upon completion of the form you will receive an email with details for completing your payment. You have the option of paying the non-refundable deposit of $250 or the full retreat payment either by mailing a check to the registrar or by making a Zelle bank transfer. The address and account information for making this payment will be included in the registration confirmation email. \n\nIf we must cancel the retreat for any reason (such as if we are under shelter-in-place orders at the time of the retreat)\, we will return your deposit and fees\, however\, the $250 deposit remains non-refundable if you cancel your reservation. Details of our cancellation policy are on the registration form. \n\nThe retreat facility is somewhat handicapped accessible. Accommodations include comfortable hotel-style rooms with ensuite baths\, and a few dorm-style cabins. RV camping with hook ups are available. See the application form for accommodation details. \nCOST: 10 nights (includes accommodation and meals)\, plus a donation to the teachers at the end of retreat. \nDue to precautions regarding the spread of COVID-19\, the double occupancy rate is only available to couples or friends who are arriving together and agree to share the room. Most participants will need to select the single room option and a rate along the single room sliding scale.  \n\nDouble occupancy sliding scale: $1900 – $1250 (estimated actual cost is $1600)\nSingle occupancy sliding scale: $2800 – $1900 (estimated actual cost is $2300)\n\nOur estimated actual costs for double accommodations and camping is $1600\, and for single accommodations it is $2300. These represent the amounts that we would have charged to cover the cost of accommodations\, food\, and basic administrative expenses if we had used a fixed rate instead of a sliding scale. \nSelecting an amount above the estimated actual cost will support the retreat and enable those who need to select a lower rate to attend the retreat. Selecting an amount below the estimated actual cost self-selects a supported scholarship rate. This sliding scale will allow most scholarship needs to be managed by self-selecting an amount lower than the estimated actual costs. Inquire with the registrar if you need additional scholarship support to attend. \nPARTIAL ATTENDANCE: Partial attendance may be arranged for a stay of 3-6 nights\, but priority is given to full retreat participants. Partial attendees will likely be housed in double occupancy rooms. Contact the registrar to determine if single accommodations for partial attendance can be arranged. Retreats of 7-9 nights are priced using the sliding scale fee range for the full retreat\, and we discourage departures in the final days of the program. If a 7-9 night option is necessary for your participation\, contact the registrar in advance to determine if this will be possible at this retreat. \n\n3 nights (Tuesday–Friday) Double: $900 – $550 sliding scale; Single: $1080 – $690 sliding scale.\n4 nights (Tuesday–Saturday) Double: $1\,100 – $675 sliding scale; Single: $1440 – $920 sliding scale.\n5 nights (Tuesday–Sunday) Double: $1\,300 – $800 sliding scale; Single: $1800 – $1150 sliding scale.\n6 nights (Tuesday–Monday) Double: $1\,500-$950 sliding scale; Single: $2160 – $1380 sliding scale.\n\nContact the registrar for details about partial attendance. \nDANA: Compensation for the teacher is not included in the registration price. There will be an opportunity to offer donations to the teacher at the end of the retreat. \nQUESTIONS?: retreatregistration \nCo-Sponsored by Bodhi Retreats and Insight Meditation South Bay

SUMMARY:Tuesday Online—Lila Kate Wheeler—Practical Dharma
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday Online—Lila Kate Wheeler—Practical Dharma\nan evening of meditation and teaching \nwith Lila Kate Wheeler \nMay 11\, 2021 \nThe Buddha’s teachings are often compared to a finger pointing to the moon. Without that finger\, we might never lift our gaze and see for ourselves. Tonight’s talk offers encouragement to stay present and awake as a lived experience so that we can lead a more centered\, caring\, ethical life. As Dharma practitioners\, we make efforts to be more present for the experiences in ourselves and others. As we do so we’ll surely hear and see things we didn’t expect or want. Here\, the teaching of the five hindrances supports us to shift our gaze yet again\, recognize more clearly and respond differently when wisdom and caring are weakened. With these skills\, we will know for sure there is no bad habit or difficult situation that cannot be softened and worked with—even liberated. \nPlease join us on Zoom. This event is appropriate for newcomers as well as experienced practitioners. The evening includes silent or guided meditation and teachings. \nTakes place on Zoom! \nJoin the Zoom Meeting\nWe now require you enter the Zoom passcode to join the meeting. \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/88266320362 \nMeeting ID: 882 6632 0362\nPasscode: metta4all \nOne tap mobile\n+16699006833\,\,88266320362# US (San Jose)\n+12532158782\,\,88266320362# US (Tacoma) \nDial by your location\n+1 669 900 6833 US (San Jose)\n+1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma)\n+1 346 248 7799 US (Houston)\n+1 929 205 6099 US (New York)\n+1 301 715 8592 US (Germantown)\n+1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago)\nMeeting ID: 882 6632 0362\nFind your local number: https://us02web.zoom.us/u/kcSiCSJ1bl \n\n  \nTEACHERS: Please visit our Teachers Page for biographies and photos of our speakers. \nTUESDAYS ONLINE: Due to coronavirus concerns\, we have converted our Tuesday evening meeting to an online format with teachings offered by Shaila Catherine and an array of guest teachers. We encourage you to give joyfully and generously\, according to your resources and means. IMSB is a 501(c) (3) organization. All donations are tax deductible as permitted by law. \nPlease support our programs and teachers with your donations. We especially encourage recurring monthly donations to help us through these difficult months of the pandemic. Donations can be made through our Donation Page. Recurring donations can be made through Network for Good or PayPal. \nFUTURE IN-PERSON GATHERINGS: When it is wise to do so\, Insight Meditation South Bay anticipates continuing our program of two weekly meditation programs. On Tuesdays\, we meet in Mountain View for our drop-in weekly program of meditation and teachings. Our Tuesday evening program usually includes a sitting meditation and Dhamma talk. The principal teacher is Shaila Catherine and guest speakers are featured regularly. Thematic series are periodically presented\, but whether or not a topic has been advertised in advance\, Shaila or a guest teacher will lead the sitting and offer teachings. On Thursdays\, we meet in Saratoga for our Dhamma Classroom\, for a series of structured courses with registration\, and periodic drop-in practice events.
