SUMMARY:Four Noble Truths
DESCRIPTION:Ways to realize the end of suffering.\nNo one wants to suffer\, and yet we do. The first sermon that the Buddha gave after his awakening addressed the issue of suffering. He articulated four basic tenants that have been remembered as the four noble truths. They include the full understanding of suffering\, the abandoning of the causes of suffering\, the realization of the end of suffering\, and the cultivation of the path leading to the end of suffering. It is through a wise relationship to suffering\, that freedom will be known. \n\nSeptember 29 – First Noble Truth with Sharon Allen\nOctober 6 – Second Noble Truth with Shaila Catherine\nOctober 13 – Third Noble Truth with Laura Lin\nOctober 20 – Fourth Noble Truth with Shaila Catherine\nOctober 27 – Deepening practice with Shaila Catherine\n\nRead teacher biographies on our Teacher Page. \nEveryone is welcome. Chairs are provided. Bring a cushion and mat if you prefer to sit on the wood floor. \nIMSB relies upon the generosity of participants to support our teachers and cover organizational expenses. Dana is a word in the ancient Pali language that describes donations\, offerings and generosity. Two bowls will be available at an event to practice dana for the teacher and IMSB; we encourage you to give joyfully and generously\, according to your resources and means. IMSB is a 501(c) (3) organization. All donations are tax deductible as permitted by law.

SUMMARY:Daylong in Saratoga – Cultivating The Meditative Path
DESCRIPTION:A day of meditation with Shaila Catherine. \nIMSB offers a day of meditation one Saturday each month. These monthly day long programs offer a consistent and easy opportunity for meditators to maintain a steady commitment to meditation\, deepen their practice\, explore various dhamma themes\, and cultivate relationships with the community—and still be home in time for dinner! \nIn IMSB’s monthly day-long programs between March and August 2016\, Shaila Catherine will explore five qualities that make the mind capable of deep meditation and empower us to live at ease in this world. See Anguttara Nikaya 5:110\, translated by Bhikkhu Bodhi\, published by Wisdom Publications. The five supports of virtue\, learning\, energetic effort\, concentration and jhana\, and liberation of mind offer a comprehensive training for living with peace\, happiness\, and wisdom. \n\nMarch – Virtue\nMay – Learning\nJune – Energetic Effort\nJuly – Concentration and Jhana\nAugust – Liberation\n\nYou will find our schedule on our Daylong and Half-day Practice Calendar. \nEach day-long in the series will stand alone.  You do not need to join the full series to participate — you are welcome to attend as many or as few Saturdays as you wish. \nThere will be a pot-luck community meal around 12:30; please bring a food dish to share. \nEveryone is welcome. There is no registration. Folding chairs are provided. Bring a mat and cushion if you prefer to sit on the floor. Beginner’s to meditation are encouraged to come on time since both sitting and walking meditation instruction are usually offered in the mornings. \nThese monthly events may take place at any of the churches where we meet—in Los Altos\, Saratoga\, or Mountain View. Be sure to double check the website event listing to identify the correct location. SUMMARY:Beautiful Mind – Five Faculties
DESCRIPTION:Nurturing the best in ourselves. \nThis series will explore the five spiritual faculties and their cultivation in meditation: faith\, energy\, mindfulness\, concentration\, and wisdom. SUMMARY:Guest: Jennifer Dungan - Right Action In The Face of Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:Right Action In The Face Of Climate Change: Can we practice non-harming?\nBefore he went forth\, Siddartha Gautama had a palace for the cold season\, one for the hot season\, and one for the four months of the rainy season. He lived over two and a half millennia ago during the Holocene epoch. We now live in what has been called the Anthropocene epoch\, in which global warming is occurring and disrupting the seasonal patterns that had been relatively stable since Gautama’s time. This disruption\, and the extreme weather events that go along with it\, pose threats to all living beings. Tonight’s talk will explore the concept of non-harming\, right action\, and the three marks of existence in the context of a world in which activities that involve fossil fuel perpetuate or worsen climate disruption. \nJENNIFER DUNGAN began her meditation practice in 2003 with a mindfulness-based stress reduction course (MBSR) and has been practicing the dhamma since joining IMSB in 2006. For nearly thirty years\, she has worked as a scientist at NASA Ames Research Center\, studying satellite imagery of Earth with a specialty in mapping vegetation patterns and how they are affected by human activity and climate change. This talk will bring together her experience in both arenas to explore the implications of climate change on a spiritual path. \n\n  \nInsight Meditation South Bay offers two weekly meditation groups—Tuesdays in Mountain View\, and Thursdays in Saratoga. \nThis group meets every Tuesday evening for a sitting and Dhamma talk in Mountain View. The principal teacher is Shaila Catherine and guest speakers are featured regularly. Thematic series are periodically presented\, but whether or not a topic has been advertised in advance\, Shaila or a guest teacher will lead the sitting and offer teachings. SUMMARY:Service Project: School Supplies Drive for Local Foster Kids
DESCRIPTION:IMSB is helping to provide local foster kids with needed school supplies.\nOne IMSB member (Farzaneh) has already purchased 28 backpacks. We now invite you to volunteer to fill one or more of these backpacks. \nFarzaneh writes: \nDear IMSB sangha members: \nThe practice of generosity is a basic way to experience happiness and freedom. Happiness\, inner calm and gratitude grow when they are fed by a compassionate and generous heart. \nGenerosity is not just about helping those less fortunate than us\, it is about giving freely\, without condition\, without judgment\, without need of explanation or glorification. Generosity is the act of selflessness\, and it is practice of renunciation. \nI would like to invite you to join me to send some of the foster children in our community to school in this coming school year with a brand new backpack and school supplies\, and perhaps plant a seed of kindness in the hearts of these youngsters. \nYou may down load the list of items needed for 2nd-5th graders\, and bring your donations to our IMSB weekly sitting group any Tuesday in July. \nOn behalf of the “HELP ONE CHILD “organization I will be more than happy to provide a tax deductible receipt. \nMay your giving hands and compassionate heart\, bring joy and happiness to your life and the life of others. \nFarzaneh Azadan\n IMSB member \nDownload this checklist of suggested items. You may purchase the specified items\, and any additional items you wish to add\, and bring the them to any IMSB Tuesday night meeting in July. \nPlease email Farzaneh at karuna to inform her of your intention to participate\, and specify how many backpacks you intend to fill. \nThank you!

SUMMARY:Daylong in Los Altos – Cultivating The Meditative Path

SUMMARY:Ethics\, Action\, and the Five Precepts
DESCRIPTION:For a life of harmony and clarity. \nThis series will explore virtue as the indispensable foundation of Buddhist practice. The series will emphasize the five training precepts\, and may explore action\, ethics\, kamma\, and cause-effect dynamics. The precepts are not rules to be obediently followed; they serve as guidelines for the intentional development of compassion\, mindfulness\, and wisdom. These five precepts offer us a joyful method to cultivate the heart\, nurture harmony in our relationships\, and free the mind from inner forces of greed and anger that if unrestrained may cause suffering for ourselves and others. \n\nJuly 7 – Refraining from Intoxication with Angie Boissevain\nJuly 14 – Refraining from Stealing with Shaila Catherine\nJuly 21 – Refraining from Sexual Misconduct with Drew Oman\nJuly 28 – Refraining from False Speech with Shaila Catherine\nAugust 4 – Refraining from Killing with Ayya Santussika\nAugust 11 – Deepening Practice with Sharon Allen\n\nRead teacher biographies on our Teacher Page. SUMMARY:Residential Retreat—Santa Rosa\, CA
DESCRIPTION:Mindfulness\, Concentration\, and Insight Meditation.\nA meditation retreat\nwith Shaila Catherine and Ann Dillon.\nThursday\, June 30\, 2016 – Sunday\, July 10\, 2016. \nThe retreat begins with registration at 1:00 pm on June 30; it ends at 11:30 am on July 10. Early arrivals can be arranged for Wednesday evening June 29. \nPartial attendance can be arranged\, but it must begin on the first day of the retreat. \nThe teachings on this retreat will be structured to support the development of concentration\, mindfulness\, and insight using the breath as the primary meditative object. Guided by group and individual meetings with the teacher\, students may work with a variety of meditative approaches to progress in a manner and pace appropriate to their individual needs. The daily morning instruction session will introduce mindfulness with breathing as a concentration practice and will systematically develop the skills that lead to the deep absorption states of jhana. Dhamma talks will explore a range of subjects to support the growth of wisdom and insight. This silent retreat is structured with alternating periods of sitting and walking meditation\, dhamma teachings\, question and answer sessions\, and teacher consultations. \nWith single rooms for everyone\, the facilities can support a range of practice approaches. This retreat may emphasize the cultivation of concentration\, but it is flexible enough to nurture a broad development of practices that are appropriate to the individual meditator. Students who are not inclined toward concentration or jhana may choose to emphasize mindfulness\, insight\, and loving kindness practices. As the retreat progresses\, some students may practice mindfulness of the body to enhance calm and presence; some students may intensify concentration to unify consciousness through the deep absorptions called jhana; some students may cultivate loving kindness and open the heart to the precious fragility of life; and other students may nurture insight into the functioning of perception and the nature of mind. \nTO REGISTER: Download and complete the AC2016 registration and waiver forms\, enclose a non-refundable deposit of $250 (payable to Bodhi-Retreats)\, and mail to: \nKatrina Bergbauer\n225 Second Avenue\nDecatur\, GA 30030 \nThe 10-day retreat is designed for experienced students. Previous retreat experience in the insight meditation tradition is required\, with a minimum of at least one week-long silent residential retreat. If you have less than one week-long silent retreat experience\, your attendance requires approval from the teacher(s). \nThe retreat facility is handicapped accessible. Accommodations are all single rooms. \nCOST: 10 nights with single accommodation is $1800 – $950 sliding scale\, plus a donation to the teachers at the end of retreat. The estimated actual per-person cost for this retreat (if we used a fixed rate) is $1400. By selecting an amount above $1400\, your generosity supports those who need to select a lower rate to attend the retreat. This sliding scale will allow scholarship needs to be handled by self-selecting an amount lower than $1400. \nPartial retreat option registration fees are below. Priority will be given to students who are registering for the full 10-days course.\n3 nights (Thursday–Sunday\, June 30–July 3) is $520\n4 nights (Thursday–Monday\, June 30– July 4) is $640\n5 nights (Thursday–Tuesday\, June 30– July 5) is $780\n6 nights (Thursday–Wednesday\, June 30– July 6) is $880\n7–9 nights (Thursday–Thursday\, Friday\, or Saturday\, June 30–July 7\, 8\, or 9) is the standard sliding scale of $1800 – $950 \nIn addition\, two or three people may register for a work-study retreat. These service roles have a registration fee of $675 and involve 3-4 hours of work per day (mostly kitchen work\, grocery shopping in advance of the retreat\, managing yogi jobs\, running errands). One service role for an experienced cook or kitchen manager may be available with no retreat fees. \nDANA: Compensation for the teacher is not included in the registration price. There will be an opportunity to offer donations to the teachers at the end of the retreat. \nCo-Sponsored by Bodhi-Retreats and Insight Meditation South Bay
