SUMMARY:ONLINE COURSE: Intro to Sutta Study & Famous Similes
DESCRIPTION:Due to the coronavirus concerns\, we have converted our Thursday evening course into an online format starting May 21. Register Now! Scroll for tickets below.  \nLearning Through Examples: Images\, Illustrations\, and Similes in the Discourses of the Buddha\nAn ONLINE 6-week Introduction to Sutta Study with Shaila Catherine and Sharon Allen \nThursdays\, May 21 – June 25\, 2020\n5:30 pm to 7:30 pm (Pacific Time) \nThe Buddha’s teachings are peppered with images of mountains\, rivers\, oceans\, sun and moon\, lions\, jackals\, turtles\, quail\, fire\, archery\, craftsmanship\, gates\, bubbles\, mirages\, magic tricks\, ripening fruit\, purifying gold\, incubating eggs\, blind men\, sumptuous meals\, stumps\, creeping vines\, etched lines\, childhood games\, and more. What makes these images so effective? What can we learn from them today? \nThe Buddha’s teaching skill shines through the wide range of illustrations he used to convey subtle points of instruction. Ordinary people could comprehend deep topics because his examples related to ordinary aspects of daily living. Farmers would relate to the images of sowing seeds and yoking oxen to the plough; warriors would understand his stories of training horses and driving chariots. Today\, these striking similes continue to give us a vivid sense of the profound path taught by the Buddha. \nThis course will serve as an introduction to sutta study by presenting and discussing several traditional similes that illustrate important aspects of Buddhist practice.\n\nMay 21. Similes on Hindrances (AN 5:193 and MN 39.12)\nMay 28. Similes on Balanced Effort (AN 6:55 and MN 19)\nJune 4. Similes on Decision Making and Feeling (MN 46.18 and MN 45.4)\nJune 11. Similes on Views and Speculation (MN 63.5 and Udana 6.4-5)\nJune 18. Similes for Spiritual Urgency and Death Reflections (AN 6:60 and AN 7:74)\nJune 25. Similes for Calming and Concentrating the Mind (AN 3:101 and AN 3:102)\n\nWHO SHOULD JOIN: This course is open to anyone\, however\, since emphasis will be on the discourses of the Buddha rather than meditation\, participants should already have some mindfulness meditation experience. \nCOURSE LEVELS: It is designed as a level 2 course. Click this link for a key to course level designations. \nVIDEO CONFERENCES: We will use the Zoom video conference platform. Zoom is easy to access via computer or phone. More information will be provided in the confirmation materials after registering. \n\nVisit our Teacher Page for teacher biographies and photographs. \nREGISTRATION: Registration is required for this course. Registration fees are non-refundable. To register\, select an option under the Tickets heading at the bottom of this page. (If you are viewing this page more than two months in advance of the course\, the Tickets heading might not yet appear\, so please check again later.) To register for a course\, you purchase one ticket\, which registers you for the entire class series. You only need to register once; you do not need to register separately for each class session. \nCourse Fee: The sliding scale fee range is from $390 to $130 and will be shared between IMSB and the teacher(s). The lower end of the sliding scale is intended for those with limited financial means. The low rate of $130 is estimated to cover the most basic costs for the specific class period. This base rate does not factor in compensation for teachers or ongoing administrative expenses for IMSB. If you pay at the mid to high range of the sliding scale\, your generosity supports those with limited income in attending our programs and also supports IMSB and the teachers\, enabling the dhamma to thrive in the South Bay area. We encourage you to choose the highest level that is appropriate for your economic situation. \nScholarship Assistance: A scholarship rate of $75 is offered for those with very limited financial means. If you need additional assistance\, or if you would like to volunteer to help out\, please inquire with the registrar by contacting ThursdayClass. \nTax Deductions: The basic registration fee is not tax deductible. Donations above the base rate will be considered voluntary contributions and are deductible for any amount that is over the base rate. Each January\, the IMSB treasurer sends donors letters that acknowledge the amount given for the previous year that is above the basic rate; this serves as documentation for tax deduction purposes. \nCancellation Policy: All fees and payments are non-refundable. If it becomes necessary to cancel participation in a course\, and the registrar is notified prior to the start of the first class meeting\, your registration fee will be converted into a voucher creditable towards the fee for a future IMSB Thursday class. Vouchers must be used within one year of the initial course start date\, and may be transferred to only one future course. Cancellations that occur after the start of the first class are not eligible for the voucher credit.

SUMMARY:Tuesday Online: Kim Allen—Training in Opposites
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday Online: Training in Opposites\nWith Kim Allen \nJune 23\, 2020 \nThe developed mind is flexible and responsive\, able to adapt to changing conditions in a wise way. This quality can come about through many different styles of training; this talk focuses on one that could be called “training in opposites.” We deliberately engage contrasting functions of the mind in order to broaden and stretch\, or opposing viewpoints in order to hone our understanding. When training in opposites\, we will encounter our own resistance and bias\, as well as learn to hold our particular conditioning with acceptance and kindness. \nPlease join us on Zoom. In this series\, we will explore the five spiritual faculties (trust\, energy\, mindfulness\, concentration\, and wisdom) as reference points and doorways to finding balance and clarity amidst uncertainty. Each highlights a different approach to developing the mind and to acting with wisdom and compassion in our life. \n\nJul 16: The Spiritual Faculties as Indriya: Ways to Channel the Mind\, with Kim Allen\nJul 23: Trust\, with Kim Allen\nJul 30: Energy\, with Shaila Catherine\nAug 6: No class. SUMMARY:Online Course - Finding Balance - with Kim Allen
DESCRIPTION:Due to the coronavirus concerns\, we have converted our Thursday evening course into an online format. We changed the time to enable meditators in other time zones to join us. Register Now! Scroll for tickets below.  \nFive Doorways to Finding Balance\nThe Spiritual Faculties in Meditation and Life\nA six-week ONLINE course led by Kim Allen and Shaila Catherine\nWhen the ground shifts beneath our feet\, how do we orient? What is reliable\, both as an inner refuge and as a source from which to act? Buddhist teachings emphasize the impermanence and unreliability of the world\, and they also offer reliable means to navigate such a world skillfully\, such that our life becomes a path to Awakening. Mid-course Break.\nAug 13: Mindfulness\, with Kim Allen\nAug 20: Concentration\, with Kim Allen\nAug 27: Wisdom\, with Kim Allen\n\nVIDEO CONFERENCES: We will use the Zoom video conference platform. To register for a course\, you purchase one ticket\, which registers you for the entire class series. You only need to register once; you do not need to register separately for each class session. COURSE FEE: The sliding scale fee range is from $600 to $125 and will be shared between IMSB and the teacher(s). The lower end of the sliding scale is intended for those with limited financial means. The low rate of $125 is used for the most basic administrative costs. This base rate does not factor in compensation for teachers or ongoing administrative expenses for IMSB. Each January\, the IMSB treasurer sends donors letters that acknowledge the amount given for the previous year that is above the basic rate; this serves as documentation for tax deduction purposes. CANCELLATION POLICY: All fees and payments are non-refundable. If it becomes necessary to cancel participation in a course\, and the registrar is notified prior to the start of the first class meeting\, your registration fee will be converted into a voucher creditable towards the fee for a future IMSB Thursday class. SUMMARY:Concentration\, Jhana\, and Breath: 10-night Retreat in Georgia
DESCRIPTION:This retreat is open for registration. We currently have 17 participants registered\, and can accept up to 4 more participants. This will be a very special retreat—a rare opportunity to practice with seclusion and intimacy. Please review the preventative measures taken by the center\, and read our new guidelines: Guidelines for Retreat Practice in the Covid-19 Era \nTeachings on Sixteen Steps of Anapanasati Samadhi\nled by Shaila Catherine\nMonday\, August 31\, 2020 – Thursday\, September 10\, 2020. \nThe retreat begins with registration from 2:00 – 3:30 pm on Monday\, August 31. The retreat ends after lunch at 1:00 pm on Thursday\, September 10. \nPartial attendance is possible in some cases\, but it must begin on the first day of the retreat and priority will be given to those registering for the full retreat. A limited number of commuter spaces may be available. \nThis retreat will utilize the breath as the primary meditation object and will encourage the development of meditative skills that lead to deep concentration (samadhi) and insight (vipassana). Daily group instructions will focus on the sixteen steps in the Anapanasati Sutta as a route to jhana and/or liberating insight. Meetings with the teacher in small groups and one-on-one dialogs will tailor the practices to meet the needs and interests of individual students. Some students may choose to emphasize concentration practice throughout the retreat; others may emphasize vipassana; and some may practice both concentration and insight inconjunction with mindfulness of breathing. \nThis retreat offers a special opportunity to train in concentration and jhana practices with personal guidance from Shaila Catherine. It is one of the very few retreats each year in which Shaila systematically guides students to establish jhana by working step by step with the Anapanasati Sutta. Students who wish to embark on this training in concentration and jhana should read her book Focused and Fearless prior to the retreat. See our Concentration and Jhana FAQ page for more information about developing concentration and the absorption states of jhana. \nThis silent retreat is structured with alternating periods of sitting and walking meditation\, dhamma teachings\, and teacher consultations. \nPrior to the retreat\, please read Focused and Fearless by Shaila Catherine\, and the Anapanasati Sutta. You may download the sutta at: https://suttacentral.net/mn118/en/bodhi \nRegister early! Space is limited. We keep this retreat small (previously under 40 participants) to enable in-depth guidance from Shaila. Update 5/29/20: As a precaution to limit the spread of the coronavirus\, the retreat will be significantly smaller than the 40 that we originally planned. Currently attendance is restricted to 22 guests\, although this number might change slightly by Aug 31. See the Guidelines for Retreat Practice in the Covid-19 Era document for more information.  \nABOUT THE SITE: Situated in a quiet rural area just outside of Atlanta\, the Ingnatius House\, a Jesuit retreat center offers convenience and comfort to support deep meditative experience. \nTO REGISTER: Download and complete the IH2020 registration and waiver forms\, enclose a non-refundable deposit of $250 (payable to Bodhi Retreats)\, and return via email and/or postal mail to the address below. We are not currently accepting credit card transactions\, so please send your registration deposit and fees via check or money order made payable to Bodhi Retreats. If this is not possible for some of our international guests\, please contact the registrar for alternative payment arrangements. \nKatrina Bergbauer\n225 Second Ave\nDecatur\, GA 30030 \nretreats \nPlease complete either the Standard-Printable or Form-Fillable form\, and also the Waiver of Liability.\nImportant: If you use the form-fillable version\, download the form to your computer first. It is situated on 20 acres of lush secluded woodland overlooking the Chattahoochee River. The site boasts 1.5 miles of trail winding up and down through tall pines\, along the river\, over quaint bridges\, and has many places to sit and soak in the serenity of this environment as it nourishes the heart. Seclusion and quietude permeate the environment\, while it is conveniently accessible from the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International airport. \nAll accommodations are in comfortable modest single rooms; each room has a private ensuite bathroom. Three meals a day will be prepared by the center’s acclaimed chef and professional culinary team. The meals will include omnivore and vegetarian options\, plentiful salads\, and daily desserts. Snacks\, coffee\, and tea will be available throughout the day.
