SUMMARY:Registration closes today for Beyond Distraction\, an in-depth online course
DESCRIPTION:Beyond Distraction: Strategies to Free The Mind\nREGISTER: Now — Sep 27\, 2020\nCOURSE: Sep 30 — Dec 30\, 2020\nMental restlessness is an insidious and pervasive hindrance that most practitioners struggle to overcome. How many times have you let go of a thought\, only to find it morph into a similar story a few minutes later? \nMany kinds of thoughts can distract us from being mindful and disrupt our concentration: obsessive planning\, worrying\, lustful thoughts\, judging\, memories\, and internal commentaries\, to name a few. This course will explore a sequence of practical strategies for dealing with obstructive mental patterns derived from two discourses taught by the Buddha (MN 19 and 20). \n\nTwo Kinds of Thought\nThe Removal of Distracting Thoughts\n\nEach learning module in the course is enriched with lectures\, guided meditations\, exercises\, related sutta readings\, discussion forums\, and audio conferences with the teacher. A variety of reflective exercises will help you integrate these ancient strategies into daily life situations. \nFor more information and registration details go to BodhiCourses.org. \nCo-sponsored by Bodhi Courses and Insight Meditation South Bay

SUMMARY:Tuesday Online: Thanissaro Bhikkhu—The Present Moment Is Not the Goal
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday Online: The Present Moment Is Not the Goal\nwith Thanissaro Bhikkhu \nSeptember 29\, 2020 \nThere’s a common understanding that the purpose of meditation is to fully arrive in the present moment. However\, the Buddha taught people to focus on the present moment not as a goal\, but as a place where work is to be done to go beyond the present. This talk\, based on the essay\, “The Karma of Now”  will explore the Buddha’s understanding of the present moment\, and the implications of that understanding\, not only for the practice of meditation\, but also for Buddhist practice as a whole. \nPlease join us on Zoom. This event is appropriate for newcomers as well as experienced practitioners. The evening includes silent or guided meditation and teachings. \n  \nTakes place on Zoom! \nJoin the Zoom Meeting\nhttps://tinyurl.com/AjaanGeoff-IMSB \nMeeting ID: 962 2348 8118\nPassword: 929 \nOne tap mobile\n+16699006833\,\,96223488118# US (San Jose)\n+12532158782\,\,96223488118# US (Tacoma) \nDial by your location\n+1 669 900 6833 US (San Jose)\n+1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma)\n+1 346 248 7799 US (Houston)\n+1 929 205 6099 US (New York)\n+1 301 715 8592 US (Germantown)\n+1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago)\nMeeting ID: 962 2348 8118\nFind your local number: https://us02web.zoom.us/u/kcSiCSJ1bl \n  \n\n  \nTEACHERS: Please visit our Teachers Page for biographies and photos of our speakers. \nTUESDAYS ONLINE: Due to coronavirus concerns\, we have converted our Tuesday evening meeting to an online format with teachings offered by Shaila Catherine and an array of guest teachers. This online group meets 6:30 – 8:00 PM Pacific Time\, which makes it possible for local members to join us after their workday\, and for East Coast friends to sit with us before bed. \nEveryone is welcome. Please share this event with your friends. \nDANA/DONATIONS: Donations to this event will be shared between tonight’s teacher and IMSB. \nIMSB relies upon the generosity of participants to support our teachers and cover organizational expenses that continue whether we are meeting in-person or online. Dana is a word in the ancient Pali language that describes donations\, offerings and generosity. We encourage you to give joyfully and generously\, according to your resources and means. IMSB is a 501(c) (3) organization. All donations are tax deductible as permitted by law. \nPlease support our programs and teachers with your donations. We especially encourage recurring monthly donations to help us through these difficult months of the pandemic. Donations can be made through our Donation Page. Recurring donations can be made through Network for Good or PayPal. \nFUTURE IN-PERSON GATHERINGS: When it is wise to do so\, Insight Meditation South Bay anticipates continuing our program of two weekly meditation programs. On Tuesdays\, we meet in Mountain View for our drop-in weekly program of meditation and teachings. Our Tuesday evening program usually includes a sitting meditation and Dhamma talk. The principal teacher is Shaila Catherine and guest speakers are featured regularly. Thematic series are periodically presented\, but whether or not a topic has been advertised in advance\, Shaila or a guest teacher will lead the sitting and offer teachings. On Thursdays\, we meet in Saratoga for our Dhamma Classroom\, for a series of structured courses with registration\, and periodic drop-in practice events.

SUMMARY:Course: From Intelligence to Intuition with Kim Allen
DESCRIPTION:If you are interested in registering for this class\, please contact the registrar (ThursdayClass) to express your interest. It has not yet been determined if this class will be offered online\, cancelled\, or meet as an in-person course in the church garden due to Covid-19 precautions.  \nA six-week course led by Kim Allen and Shaila Catherine\nCultivation of Dhamma wisdom that benefits all beings. \nThursdays\, September 10 – October 15\nPlus bonus drop-in session October 22\n7:15-9:00pm\nSilence begins at 7:00. Arrive early (around 7:00) to enjoy the optional pre-class meditation period. \nModern life in the West encourages reliance on our “analytical” mind – that which does planning\, deciding\, evaluating\, analyzing\, and debating. This aspect of mind\, when untrained\, is prone to agitation\, aversion\, anxiety\, and other undesirable qualities. It can also be used in healthy ways\, such as discerning what is wholesome\, and learning and contemplating teachings. \nThrough various meditation practices and the additional nourishment of heart qualities\, the mind learns to reduce its reliance on “reason” as a more intuitive capacity strengthens. Eventually\, our mind can manifest the intuitive wisdom\, clarity\, and responsiveness that are truly beneficial for ourselves and the world. \nThis 6-week course explores practices that can help to mature the analytical mind. Each week\, we will focus on one practice. Together\, they form a mandala of skillful means. We will also learn how these practices fit into a path to liberation in Buddhist teachings. \nClasses will include meditation\, sutta study\, teachings\, and Q&A. \n\nSept 10: Arriving in the Present Moment\, with Kim Allen\nSept 17: Working with Discursive Thinking\, with Shaila Catherine\nSept 24: Skillful Use of Reflection\, with Shaila Catherine\nOct 1: Nourishment for the Path: Opening the Heart\, with Kim Allen\nOct 8: Clear Comprehension and Dhamma Investigation\, with Kim Allen\nOct 15: Intuitive Wisdom\, with Kim Allen\nOct 22: Bonus Drop-In Session – Sitting\, Walking\, and Reflection\, with Kim Allen\n\nWHO SHOULD JOIN: This course intended for people who already have a basic introduction to mindfulness. \nCOURSE LEVELS: It is designed as a level 1-3 course. Click this link for a key to course level designations. \n\nVisit our Teacher Page for teacher biographies and photographs. \nREGISTRATION: Registration is required for this course. Registration fees are non-refundable. To register\, select an option under the Tickets heading at the bottom of this page. (If you are viewing this page more than two months in advance of the course\, the Tickets heading might not yet appear\, so please check again later.) To register for a course\, you purchase one ticket\, which registers you for the entire class series. You only need to register once; you do not need to register separately for each class session. \nCourse Fee: The sliding scale fee range is from $360 to $120 and will be shared between IMSB and the teacher(s). The lower end of the sliding scale is intended for those with limited financial means. The low rate of $120 is estimated to cover the most basic costs such as rent and insurance for the specific class period. This base rate does not factor in compensation for teachers or ongoing administrative expenses for IMSB. If you pay at the mid to high range of the sliding scale\, your generosity supports those with limited income in attending our programs and also supports IMSB and the teachers\, enabling the dhamma to thrive in the South Bay area. We encourage you to choose the highest level that is appropriate for your economic situation. \nScholarship Assistance: A scholarship rate of $50 is offered for those with very limited financial means. If you need additional assistance\, or if you would like to volunteer to help out\, please inquire with the registrar by contacting ThursdayClass. \nTax Deductions: The basic registration fee is not tax deductible. Donations above the base rate will be considered voluntary contributions and are deductible for any amount that is over the base rate. Each January\, the IMSB treasurer sends donors letters that acknowledge the amount given for the previous year that is above the basic rate; this serves as documentation for tax deduction purposes. \nCancellation Policy: All fees and payments are non-refundable. If it becomes necessary to cancel participation in a course\, and the registrar is notified prior to the start of the first class meeting\, your registration fee will be converted into a voucher creditable towards the fee for a future IMSB Thursday class. Vouchers must be used within one year of the initial course start date\, and may be transferred to only one future course. Cancellations that occur after the start of the first class are not eligible for the voucher credit.

SUMMARY:Tuesday Online: Maria Straatmann—Confidence\, Uncertainty and the Five Aggregates
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday Online: Maria Straatmann—Confidence\, Uncertainty and the Five Aggregates\nwith Maria Straatmann \nOctober 27\, 2020 \nIn times of uncertainty we tend to reinforce those things that lend themselves to feeling safe and familiar\, usually by reaffirming a sense of self that says\, “This is right; this is who I am; this is how things should be.”  The way we do this is described in Buddhism with the five aggregates\, the ways we experience\, perceive\, and interpret reality. SUMMARY:Course: Effort and Ease
DESCRIPTION:Balancing Effort and Ease in Meditation and in Life\nA 6-week course led by Shaila Catherine and _______________ \nDeveloping the energies that transform and awaken the mind! \nThursdays\, November 5 – December 17\, 2020\n7:15 pm to 9:00 pm\nSilence begins at 7:00. Arrive early (around 7:00) to enjoy the optional pre-class meditation period. \nRight effort – balancing energy and ease – supports the development of mindfulness\, concentration\, and insight. By learning to use our energies effectively\, we overcome obstacles\, transform mental habits\, open to a fresh and free way of engaging with experience\, and cultivate beautiful qualities that incline the mind toward profound peace. \nThis course will explore effort with an emphasis on the four modes of “right striving” described in the Sammappadhāna Samyutta\, The Connected Discourses on Right Striving (SN 49.1). This brief teaching presents a flexible four-part approach to refining and balancing energy that is relevant to formal meditation practice\, and can help us to skillfully meet the demands of daily life. \n\nNovember 5: Introducing Mindfulness and Effort: A Balanced Approach\nNovember 12: Effort to Protect\nNovember 19: Effort to Free\nNovember 26: No class tonight. Enjoy the Thanksgiving Holiday!\nDecember 3: Effort to Cultivate\nDecember 11: Effort to Maintain\nDecember 17: Reflections on Skillful Effort\, Confidence\, and Relaxation\n\nWHO SHOULD JOIN: This course is open to all practitioners. \nCOURSE LEVELS: It is designed as a level 1 course.

SUMMARY:Tuesday Online — Shaila Catherine & Phil Jones — Relevance of Renunciation
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday Online\nRelevance of Renunciation for Practice Today\nA joint meditation group session bringing together practitioners from Insight Meditation South Bay and Show Me Dharma\nwith Shaila Catherine and Philip Jones \nTuesday\, November 17\, 2020\n6:00 – 7:30 PM Pacific Time\n8:00 – 9:30 PM Central Time \nNote that we have changed our usual meeting time to accommodate the differences between Pacific and Central time zones for this evening’s event. \nThe Dalai Lama was once asked by reporters\, “What does Buddhism teach that would promote happiness?” After a quiet thoughtful pause he smiled and replied\, “Renunciation!” \nContemporary lay practitioners might wonder how renunciation leads to happiness\, and how it could be relevant for their own spiritual path. Should renunciation be a part of lay practice\, or is it a discipline suited particularly for the ordained? How would renunciation manifest in a contemporary lay lifestyle\, and what forms would it take in our daily practice? What is the aim of renunciation for one who lives with the daily pressures\, responsibilities\, choices\, and possessions of a lay person? \nTonight’s session will take advantage of the online format by bringing two meditation groups and their teachers to together to explore this dhamma theme\, and simultaneously broaden connections with dharma practitioners across the country. \nProgram Sequence: \n\nGuided Meditation led by Shaila Catherine\nBrief Talk by Shaila Catherine\nBrief Talk by Phil Jones\nMixed Breakout Groups with participants from each sangha\nGroup Discussion\, Questions and Answers\n\nThis event is appropriate for newcomers as well as experienced practitioners. Although this topic may sometimes seem obscure in the context of modern lay life\, it is worthy of deep reflection and study. The Buddha urged his disciples to apply their minds to understand the teachings on emptiness. The experience of emptiness is so central to his message in fact\, that on one occasion he warned that the dhamma will disappear from this world if people do not lend an ear to the teachings that “are deep\, deep in meaning\, supramundane\, dealing with emptiness.” \nThis course is structured as a discussion of the book authored by Guy Armstrong titled “Emptiness: A Practical Guide for Meditators.” Shaila Catherine will lead guided meditations and discussions to facilitate a profound contemplation of emptiness. Together we will explore a variety of meditation practices that illuminate the insubstantial void nature of experience and incline the mind toward a direct realization of emptiness. \nSCHEDULE:\n\nDecember 7 — The World is Empty of Self — Chapters 1 & 2\nDecember 14 — What is Real? — Chapters 3 & 4\nDecember 21 — How We Create A Sense of Self — Chapter 5\nJanuary 4 — Beyond Self — Chapters 6\, 7 & 8\nJanuary 11 — Karma: Who Acts? — Chapters 9 & 10\nFebruary 1 — The End of Karma\, Abiding in Emptiness\, Cessation\, Nibbana — Chapters 11\, 12 & 13\nFebruary 8 — All Phenomena are Empty — Chapters 14\, 15 & 16\nFebruary 15 — The Empty Nature of Awareness. Our teacher relies upon the generosity of students for her livelihood\, so we encourage you to choose the highest level that is appropriate for your economic situation. Thank you for your generosity! The ticketing process will give you the option of paying by credit card\, Pay Pal\, or by mailing a check. \nTeacher Dana: Donations to support the teacher are much appreciated. SUMMARY:Tuesday Online—Allan Cooper—Householder's Vinaya
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday Online: A Householder’s Vinaya\nAn evening with Allan Cooper\,\nauthor of A Householder’s Vinaya \nDecember 8\, 2020 \n \nAuthor Allan Cooper will speak on making lay life one’s practice instead of trying to fit practice into lay life. \nAbout the book: \nThe Householder’s Vinaya is an accessible step by step ‘how to’ manual for anyone wishing to create an everyday life of meditative development. These new ways help cultivate and deepen meditative wisdom and establishes a deeper and more textured baseline when returning to the retreat center or monastery. \nA Householder’s Vinaya uses everyday life and our everyday practice and transforms chores\, distractions\, and any normal activity into the balance that is necessary to discover or deepen the promise of liberation. Our daily practice combined with our everyday activities become the field of practice. \nA Householder’s Vinaya is available for purchase in Kindle and paperback formats on Amazon. It can be accessed online and is available for free download at householdersvinaya.com. Choose the Featured Material option for download options. \n\nIn A Householder’s Vinaya\, Allan Cooper describes in detail and depth guidelines for realizing our highest dharma aspirations. Going beyond conventional notions of daily life practice\, Allan’s deep wisdom both challenges and inspires us to raise the bar of impeccability as we undertake the liberating teachings of the Buddha. In this unique work\, there is a wealth of practical advice for transforming everyday life experiences into a genuine path of awakening.  Highly recommended.\n— Joseph Goldstein\, author of Mindfulness: A Practical Guide to Awakening \n\n\n\nRecommended Reading:\nIf you would care to do a little reading in preparation for this event\, please read the section on Clear Comprehension (sampajanna in Pali) in The Heart of Buddhist Meditation by Nyanaponika Thera. The section on Clear Comprehension can be found on pages 36–49 in the version of the text found on Google Books. \nAllan also recommends:\nBhikku Bodhi\, The Noble Eightfold Path: The Way to the End of Suffering available online at https://www.accesstoinsight.org/lib/authors/bodhi/waytoend.html \nDue to the coronavirus concerns\, we are holding our Tuesday meetings online.  \nThis event is appropriate for newcomers as well as experienced practitioners. SUMMARY:Emptiness in Buddhist Practice—Online
DESCRIPTION:Emptiness in Buddhist Practice—Online\nAn 8-week course led by Shaila Catherine \nMondays Online via Zoom\nDecember 7\, 14\, 21\, January 4\, 11\, February 1\, 8\, 15\n4:30 – 6:00 PM Pacific Time \nTeachings on emptiness point directly to the liberating potential of the Buddhist path. \n\nDecember 7 — The World is Empty of Self — Chapters 1 & 2\nDecember 14 — What is Real?
