SUMMARY:Daylong: Loving Kindness - with Bhante U Jagara and Shaila Catherine
DESCRIPTION:with Bhante U Jagara and Shaila Catherine \nThere will be a pot-luck community meal offering at 11:15; please bring a food dish to share. \nLoving kindness (metta) describes a feeling of warmth and acceptance towards oneself and others. Cultivating loving kindness creates a profoundly generous state of mind in which the self disappears. As divisions between self and others dissolve\, the experience of non-conflict can put an end to grudges and patterns of anger\, resentment\, fear\, and suffering. As both a basis for happiness and a platform for insight\, loving kindness can be understood as a means and also as a goal on the meditative path. \nThe teachings in this day-long program will include a detailed study and analysis of the metta sutta in the context of meditation. There will be sitting and walking meditation\, guided meditations\, and instructions for developing loving kindness. It is appropriate for new and experienced meditators. \nEveryone is welcome. Chairs are provided. Bring a cushion and mat if you prefer to sit on the floor. The floor is not carpeted.

SUMMARY:Daylong in Santa Cruz with Shaila Catherine
DESCRIPTION:Living Without Enemies \nThe Buddha said\, “The world may quarrel with me\, but I do not quarrel with the world.” How can we live our lives without causing conflict—without making anyone into an enemy? This day long program will blend sitting and walking meditations with teachings and reflection to discover how unpleasant experiences might lead an untrained mind toward anger\, blame\, prejudice\, and hatred. We will consider how anger can develop into violence and learn ways to transform this tendency so that we meet pain\, and even abuse\, with a balanced\, kind\, and wise attention. Meditative insights can change our lives—they can free the mind from the underlying tendency to hate.

SUMMARY:Overcoming Obstacles to Meditation

This series will investigate hindrances to meditation\, and nurture the skills that will enable us to overcome the common obstacles to meditative insight. Through mindful inquiry we will recognize the presence\, absence\, and causal conditions for hindrances and thereby transform negative patterns into positive states. \nEveryone is welcome. SUMMARY:Online – Obstacles to Concentration: Registration March 1- April 27
DESCRIPTION:Overcoming Obstacles to Concentration \nMarch 1 – April 27: Registration period\nMay 3 – July 27: Course includes 6 content modules in ten-day sections\, plus welcome and wrap up modules. \nMeditation practice cultivates inner peace\, clarity\, concentration and joy. In order to experience these lovely qualities\, we must overcome the challenges of agitation\, dullness\, obsessive thinking\, physical pain\, difficult emotions\, and reactivity. In this course we will identify\, investigate\, and learn to skillfully overcome obstacles to concentration and insight. Through inquiry into how the mind functions we will recognize the presence\, absence\, and causal conditions for hindrances\, and transform habitual patterns that might obstruct wholesome states. Once the obstacles have been understood and overcome\, the path to deep and stable states of concentration will be clear\, and mindfulness of the processes of mind and body will be firmly established. \nThe course will include recorded lectures and guided meditations\, reading assignments\, sutta study\, discussion forums\, audio conferences with the teacher\, and a library of resources. This course is suitable for all levels of experience. \nOvercoming Obstacles to Concentration is the first in a series on cultivating concentration\, and is a pre-requisite for participation in successive courses. Additional courses in this series will include Cultivating the Jhana Factors\, Deepening Concentration\, and Jhanas as the Basis for Insight. \nFor more information and registration details visit BodhiCourses.org

SUMMARY:Developing a Kind Heart
DESCRIPTION:Developing a Kind Heart – A series that will open the heart and bring balance in relationships. \nThis series will nurture the development of four profound qualities of heart: loving-kindness\, compassion\, joy\, and equanimity. These four qualities express a powerful and immeasurable intention of kindness toward ourselves and all beings. They are traditionally called the Divine Abodes (Brahma Viharas) or dwellings of the gods. When these qualities are well developed the heart-mind will be liberated from ill will\, cruelty\, envy\, expectation and demand—one will dwell with a pure “divine” perception of all things. \nEveryone is welcome. No registration is required. Chairs are provided\, but bring a sitting mat and cushion if you prefer to sit on the floor; it is not carpeted. \n\nMarch 5 – Loving Kindness with Kim Allen\nMarch 12 – Compassion with Cheryl Branco\nMarch 19 – Empathetic Joy with Berget Jelane\nMarch 26 – Equanimity with Angie Boissevain\nApril 2 – Community Practice: Sitting and walking meditation with Sharon Allen\n\nSpeaker biographies are posted on our Teachers Page. \nEveryone is welcome. Chairs are provided. Bring a cushion and mat if you prefer to sit on the wood floor. \nIMSB relies upon the generosity of participants to support our teachers and cover organizational expenses. Dana is a word in the ancient Pali language that describes donations\, offerings and generosity. Two bowls will be available at an event to practice dana for the teacher and IMSB; we encourage you to give joyfully and generously\, according to your resources and means. IMSB is a 501(c) (3) organization. All donations are tax deductible as permitted by law.

SUMMARY:Online – Obstacles to Concentration: Registration opens
DESCRIPTION:Overcoming Obstacles to Concentration \nMarch 1 – April 27: Registration period\nMay 3 – July 31: Course includes 6 content modules in ten-day sections\, plus welcome and wrap up modules.
