SUMMARY:Day-long near Indianapolis\, Indiana
DESCRIPTION:Intention and the Power of Thought\nA day of meditation with Shaila Catherine \nThe Buddha’s teachings offer practical instructions for working with thought\, freeing the mind from patterns that perpetuate suffering\, and cultivating intentions that will lead to deep happiness. In this daylong program\, we will explore the practical and liberating teachings of the Buddha\, learning to use thought skillfully\, rather than be overwhelmed by opinions\, judgments\, or conditioned mental patterns. \nRegistration Fee: \n$50 in advance\, $60 at the door. No refunds except if organizers cancel the event. There are two financial-need scholarships remembering Walt Bush\, a $10 discount for students and seniors. Fee does not include dana for the teacher. It includes facility rental and will help pay for the teacher’s transportation costs. \nPre-Registration is recommended. Mail your contact information (full name\, address\, email\, and phone number) and check made out to Cindy Brown to her address: 8865 Westfield Blvd\, Indianapolis\, Indiana\, 46240 \nYour place in the retreat is not secured until your payment is received. Please send your registration as soon as you decide to attend. Maximum attendees is 35. \nPre-paid vegetarian lunch at Benedict Inn cafeteria is available for those with no dietary restrictions. This is available only if we receive your additional $10 by September 24\, 2015. If not received by then or you pay at the door\, please bring your own vegetarian or vegan lunch. Bottled water will be available if needed. \nOn the Day of the Retreat: \nRegistration will start at 9:15 AM. Participants are encouraged to come early and enjoy the grounds at Benedict Inn. Sitting will be in chairs but feel free to bring your cushion if you prefer to sit on the floor. \nDana for the teacher is encouraged. In the Buddhist tradition\, the teachings are given freely because they are considered priceless. One of the easiest forms of Dana to practice is in the form of monetary donation. Dana is not payment for goods or services rendered; it is given from the heart. Your generosity is a gift that supports not just the teachers\, but also the Sangha\, the larger Dharma community\, and your own practice. \nRegister through the Indianapolis Buddhist Meditation Retreat’s MeetUp site.

This program gathers a group of committed practitioners to work more closely with Shaila during the year\, strengthen community\, and receive personalized guidance. The program includes monthly day-long retreats\, private interviews\, group discussions\, and the intention to attend one retreat with Shaila. \nThis year’s Walking The Path theme is inspired by the fourth Foundation of Mindfulness (in the Satipatthana Sutta). Although meditation is renowned for promoting tranquility and mental calmness\, meditation is not passive. Investigative methods play a vital role in the skillful development of liberating insight. Specific instructions for examining the mind feature prominently in the core teachings of Satipatthana\, and many early Buddhist teachings. This series of day longs will emphasize the development of a wise\, dynamic\, investigative approach to meditation. We will examine the quality of mind\, and come to understand how we might meet life’s experiences free from suffering. \nPARTICIPANTS SHOULD BE WILLING TO:\n1. Have an individual consultation with the teacher 2-4 times during the year either in-person or on the telephone.\n4. Participate in periodic discussion groups\, most often during the last hour of each day-long program in Saratoga or Los Altos (5:00 – 6:00 pm). \nREGISTRATION: \nSend registration fee of $140 made payable to ‘Bodhi-Retreats’ to Jennifer Dungan\, 565 Anza St.\, Mountain View\, CA 94041. \nAlso\, include a note\, or send a message to path describing:\n1. Bring a cushion if you prefer to sit on the floor. \nIMSB relies upon the generosity of participants to support our teachers and cover organizational expenses. Dana is a word in the ancient Pali language that describes donations\, offerings and generosity. SUMMARY:Daylong in Los Altos - What is your state of mind?
DESCRIPTION:A day of meditation with Shaila Catherine. \nAlthough meditation is renowned for promoting tranquility and mental calmness\, meditation is not passive. Investigative methods play a vital role in the skillful development of liberating insight. \nToday’s program will encourage self-examination and self-reflection to recognize the state of our own minds during meditation and activity. The teaching will be based on a text found in the Numerical Discourses (Sutta 10:51-52) that emphasizes the importance of self-examination. \nThis day-long program will include sitting and walking meditation\, instructions\, teachings\, and opportunities for individual meetings with the teacher. This practice day is appropriate for new and experienced meditators\, drop-in participants\, and dedicated Walking the Path members. Beginners are especially encouraged to attend the morning sessions when more meditation instruction is offered. \nThere will be a pot-luck community meal at 12:30; please bring a food dish to share. \nEveryone is welcome. Chairs are provided. Bring a cushion and mat if you prefer to sit on the floor.

SUMMARY:Author Event with Lama Surya Das
DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss this inspirational event with Lama Surya Das\, a best selling author and dharma teacher! \nLama Surya Das will speak about his latest book Make Me One with Everything: Buddhist Meditations to Awaken from the Illusion of Separation \n“If you’ve ever felt ‘at one’ with something—your beloved or your child\, a forest trail or a favorite song\,” shares Lama Surya Das\, “then you’ve experienced inter-meditation.” \nWe’re used to thinking of meditation as a solitary activity that occurs solely in our own minds: by turning inward we strive to dissolve obstacles through self-inquiry and find peace through concentration\, contemplation\, and self-emptying. But inter-meditation (or co-meditation) is the other half of meditation: it’s inclusive and instead of getting rid of things we embrace people\, feelings\, and events. \nBased on Tibetan Buddhism’s core insights into the inherent essence of who we are\, the teachings of shared spirituality in Make Me One with Everything offer both novice and seasoned meditators a better way to live—not just on the meditation cushion or the yoga mat\, but in every moment of their lives. \n\n7:00 pm — Doors open. Books will be available for purchase.\n7:30 pm – 9:00 pm — Meditation and teaching.\nLama Surya Das will be available to sign book before and after the teaching.\n\nTeacher biographies can be found on our guest teacher page. \nEveryone is welcome. Chairs are provided. Bring a cushion and mat if you prefer to sit on the floor. \nIMSB relies upon the generosity of participants to support our teachers and cover organizational expenses. Dana is a word in the ancient Pali language that describes donations\, offerings and generosity. SUMMARY:Retreat 3 – Netherlands
DESCRIPTION:Intention and the Power of Thought\nwith Shaila Catherine. \nAugust 20 – 23\, 2015 \nIntention is a powerful force underlying experiences of both suffering and joy. Our intentions affect decision-making\, communications\, relationship dynamics\, psychological perspectives\, meditative development\, kammic tendencies\, and our moment-to-moment encounter with life. Intention determines our actions; intention affects what we will become. The Buddha’s teachings offer practical instructions for working with thought\, freeing the mind from patterns that perpetuate suffering\, and cultivating intentions that will lead to deep happiness. In this weekend retreat\, we will explore the practical and liberating teachings of the Buddha\, learning to use thought skillfully\, rather than be overwhelmed by opinions\, judgments\, or conditioned mental patterns. This insight meditation retreat is suitable for new and experienced practitioners. \nAll levels from beginners to advanced practitioners are welcome at this weekend retreat in Cadzand\, in the Netherlands.
