SUMMARY:Daylong in Los Altos – Cultivating The Meditative Path
DESCRIPTION:A day of meditation with Shaila Catherine. \nIMSB offers a day of meditation one Saturday each month. These monthly day long programs offer a consistent and easy opportunity for meditators to maintain a steady commitment to meditation\, deepen their practice\, explore various dhamma themes\, and cultivate relationships with the community—and still be home in time for dinner! \nIn IMSB’s monthly day-long programs between March and August 2016\, Shaila Catherine will explore five qualities that make the mind capable of deep meditation and empower us to live at ease in this world. See Anguttara Nikaya 5:110\, translated by Bhikkhu Bodhi\, published by Wisdom Publications. The five supports of virtue\, learning\, energetic effort\, concentration and jhana\, and liberation of mind offer a comprehensive training for living with peace\, happiness\, and wisdom. \n\nMarch – Virtue\nMay – Learning\nJune – Energetic Effort\nJuly – Concentration and Jhana\nAugust – Liberation\n\nYou will find our schedule on our Daylong and Half-day Practice Calendar. \nEach day-long in the series will stand alone.  You do not need to join the full series to participate — you are welcome to attend as many or as few Saturdays as you wish. \nThere will be a pot-luck community meal around 12:30; please bring a food dish to share. \nEveryone is welcome. There is no registration. Folding chairs are provided. Bring a mat and cushion if you prefer to sit on the floor. Beginner’s to meditation are encouraged to come on time since both sitting and walking meditation instruction are usually offered in the mornings. \nThese monthly events may take place at any of the churches where we meet—in Los Altos\, Saratoga\, or Mountain View. Be sure to double check the website event listing to identify the correct location. \nIMSB relies upon the generosity of participants to support our teachers and cover organizational expenses. Dana is a word in the ancient Pali language that describes donations\, offerings and generosity. Two bowls will be available at an event to practice dana for the teacher and IMSB; we encourage you to give joyfully and generously\, according to your resources and means. IMSB is a 501(c) (3) organization. All donations are tax deductible as permitted by law. \n

SUMMARY:Ethics\, Action\, and the Five Precepts
DESCRIPTION:For a life of harmony and clarity. \nThis series will explore virtue as the indispensable foundation of Buddhist practice. The series will emphasize the five training precepts\, and may explore action\, ethics\, kamma\, and cause-effect dynamics. The precepts are not rules to be obediently followed; they serve as guidelines for the intentional development of compassion\, mindfulness\, and wisdom. These five precepts offer us a joyful method to cultivate the heart\, nurture harmony in our relationships\, and free the mind from inner forces of greed and anger that if unrestrained may cause suffering for ourselves and others. \n\nJuly 7 – Refraining from Intoxication with Angie Boissevain\nJuly 14 – Refraining from Stealing with Shaila Catherine\nJuly 21 – Refraining from Sexual Misconduct with Drew Oman\nJuly 28 – Refraining from False Speech with Shaila Catherine\nAugust 4 – Refraining from Killing with Ayya Santussika\nAugust 11 – Deepening Practice with Sharon Allen\n\nRead teacher biographies on our Teacher Page. \nEveryone is welcome. Chairs are provided. Bring a cushion and mat if you prefer to sit on the wood floor. SUMMARY:Residential Retreat—Santa Rosa\, CA
DESCRIPTION:Mindfulness\, Concentration\, and Insight Meditation.\nA meditation retreat\nwith Shaila Catherine and Ann Dillon.\nThursday\, June 30\, 2016 – Sunday\, July 10\, 2016. \nThe retreat begins with registration at 1:00 pm on June 30; it ends at 11:30 am on July 10. Early arrivals can be arranged for Wednesday evening June 29. \nPartial attendance can be arranged\, but it must begin on the first day of the retreat. \nThe teachings on this retreat will be structured to support the development of concentration\, mindfulness\, and insight using the breath as the primary meditative object. Guided by group and individual meetings with the teacher\, students may work with a variety of meditative approaches to progress in a manner and pace appropriate to their individual needs. The daily morning instruction session will introduce mindfulness with breathing as a concentration practice and will systematically develop the skills that lead to the deep absorption states of jhana. Dhamma talks will explore a range of subjects to support the growth of wisdom and insight. This silent retreat is structured with alternating periods of sitting and walking meditation\, dhamma teachings\, question and answer sessions\, and teacher consultations. \nWith single rooms for everyone\, the facilities can support a range of practice approaches. This retreat may emphasize the cultivation of concentration\, but it is flexible enough to nurture a broad development of practices that are appropriate to the individual meditator. Students who are not inclined toward concentration or jhana may choose to emphasize mindfulness\, insight\, and loving kindness practices. As the retreat progresses\, some students may practice mindfulness of the body to enhance calm and presence; some students may intensify concentration to unify consciousness through the deep absorptions called jhana; some students may cultivate loving kindness and open the heart to the precious fragility of life; and other students may nurture insight into the functioning of perception and the nature of mind. \nTO REGISTER: Download and complete the AC2016 registration and waiver forms\, enclose a non-refundable deposit of $250 (payable to Bodhi-Retreats)\, and mail to: \nKatrina Bergbauer\n225 Second Avenue\nDecatur\, GA 30030 \nThe 10-day retreat is designed for experienced students. Previous retreat experience in the insight meditation tradition is required\, with a minimum of at least one week-long silent residential retreat. If you have less than one week-long silent retreat experience\, your attendance requires approval from the teacher(s). \nThe retreat facility is handicapped accessible. Accommodations are all single rooms. \nCOST: 10 nights with single accommodation is $1800 – $950 sliding scale\, plus a donation to the teachers at the end of retreat. The estimated actual per-person cost for this retreat (if we used a fixed rate) is $1400. By selecting an amount above $1400\, your generosity supports those who need to select a lower rate to attend the retreat. This sliding scale will allow scholarship needs to be handled by self-selecting an amount lower than $1400. \nPartial retreat option registration fees are below. Priority will be given to students who are registering for the full 10-days course.\n3 nights (Thursday–Sunday\, June 30–July 3) is $520\n4 nights (Thursday–Monday\, June 30– July 4) is $640\n5 nights (Thursday–Tuesday\, June 30– July 5) is $780\n6 nights (Thursday–Wednesday\, June 30– July 6) is $880\n7–9 nights (Thursday–Thursday\, Friday\, or Saturday\, June 30–July 7\, 8\, or 9) is the standard sliding scale of $1800 – $950 \nIn addition\, two or three people may register for a work-study retreat. These service roles have a registration fee of $675 and involve 3-4 hours of work per day (mostly kitchen work\, grocery shopping in advance of the retreat\, managing yogi jobs\, running errands). One service role for an experienced cook or kitchen manager may be available with no retreat fees. \nDANA: Compensation for the teacher is not included in the registration price. There will be an opportunity to offer donations to the teachers at the end of the retreat. \nCo-Sponsored by Bodhi-Retreats and Insight Meditation South Bay

SUMMARY:Speaker Series: Lesser Known Teachings
DESCRIPTION:Thus Have I Heard: Teachings Inspired by Lesser Known Discourses of the Buddha\nThe Pali Canon includes over 5\,000 discourses that document conversations and encounters that occurred during forty years of the Buddha’s ministry. Over the centuries\, certain teachings have risen to the surface with popularity and come to characterize our impression of what the Buddha taught. However\, the vast collection of source material reaches beyond these well known teachings. \nFor this speaker series\, IMSB has invited guest teachers to focus on teachings that have been largely neglected by contemporary Buddhist groups.
Each talk will share a lesser-known teaching\, event\, or instruction that will enrich our comprehension of what the Buddha taught. We will discover whether broadening our source material reinforces the dominant view of Buddhist practice or paints a different picture of meditation and the path of liberation. \n\nApril 12 — with Sean Feit — Two Bright Qualities: Shame and Dread (hiri and ottappa) — Teachings from AN 7:65\nApril 19 — with Diana Clark — Sustaining Relationships — Teachings from AN 4:32\, AN 4:256  and AN 9:5\nApril 26 — with Tony Bernhard — Lessons from the Quarrel at Kosambi — Teachings from MN 48 and MN 128\nMay 3 — with Kim Allen — From Scared-in-the-Woods to Liberated — Teachings from MN 4\, on Fear and Dread\nMay 10 — with Andrea Fella — Becoming Freedom — Teachings from the Atthakavagga in the Sutta Nipata\nMay 17 — with Nona Olivia — Discerning a Trustworthy Teacher — Guidance from the Therigatha and Canki Sutta\nMay 24 – with Shaila Catherine — The Buddha’s Practical Advice for Maintaining Material Gains and Wealth\n\nAN = Anguttara Nikaya\, The Numerical Discourses of the Buddha\nMN = Majjhima Nikaya\, The Middle Length Discourses of the Buddha\n— Sutta reference numbers are based upon Bhikkhu Bodhi’s translation\, published by Wisdom Publications. \nRead speaker biographies on our Teacher’s Page. \nEveryone is welcome.
