SUMMARY:Emptiness in Buddhist Practice—Online
DESCRIPTION:Emptiness in Buddhist Practice—Online\nAn 8-week course led by Shaila Catherine \nMondays Online via Zoom\nDecember 7\, 14\, 21\, January 4\, 11\, February 1\, 8\, 15\n4:30 – 6:00 PM Pacific Time \nTeachings on emptiness point directly to the liberating potential of the Buddhist path. Although this topic may sometimes seem obscure in the context of modern lay life\, it is worthy of deep reflection and study. The Buddha urged his disciples to apply their minds to understand the teachings on emptiness. The experience of emptiness is so central to his message in fact\, that on one occasion he warned that the dhamma will disappear from this world if people do not lend an ear to the teachings that “are deep\, deep in meaning\, supramundane\, dealing with emptiness.” \nThis course is structured as a discussion of the book authored by Guy Armstrong titled “Emptiness: A Practical Guide for Meditators.” Shaila Catherine will lead guided meditations and discussions to facilitate a profound contemplation of emptiness. Together we will explore a variety of meditation practices that illuminate the insubstantial void nature of experience and incline the mind toward a direct realization of emptiness. \n\nDecember 7 — The World is Empty of Self — Chapters 1 & 2\nDecember 14 — What is Real? — Chapters 3 & 4\nDecember 21 — How We Create A Sense of Self — Chapter 5\nJanuary 4 — Beyond Self — Chapters 6\, 7 & 8\nJanuary 11 — Karma: Who Acts? — Chapters 9 & 10\nFebruary 1 — The End of Karma\, Abiding in Emptiness\, Cessation\, Nibbana — Chapters 11\, 12 & 13\nFebruary 8 — All Phenomena are Empty — Chapters 14\, 15 & 16\nFebruary 15 — The Empty Nature of Awareness. Compassion — Chapters 17 – 21\n\nREQUIRED BOOK: Emptiness: A Practical Guide for Meditators\, by Guy Armstrong\, published by Wisdom Publications. Paperback: ISBN 9781614295266. E-book: ISBN 9781614293798 \nWHO SHOULD JOIN: This course is open to all practitioners\, however\, it is designed for those who have already had an introduction to mindfulness meditation practices. \nCOURSE LEVELS: It is designed as a level 2 course. Click this link for a key to course level designations. \nPRECAUTIONS FOR IN-PERSON MEETINGS: The in-person meetings will be limited to a maximum of 20 participants. We will meet in a large sanctuary that under normal circumstances would seat 250. Your temperature will be taken before entering\, face masks that cover the nose and mouth are required\, and social distancing will be practiced. Please bring a sweater\, shawl\, or lap blanket to keep warm since we will increase ventilation by cracking open the doors. \nABOUT ONLINE MEETINGS: A Zoom link will be provided after registration. \nTO REGISTER: Go to NEW COURSE: Emptiness in Buddhist Practice for how to register.

SUMMARY:Tuesday Online—Robin Boudette—Finding Freedom from Habitual Patterns
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday Online—Robin Boudette—Finding Freedom from Habitual Patterns\nan evening of meditation and teaching \nwith Robin Boudette \nFebruary 2\, 2021 \nIn the chaos of our everyday lives\, we often run on auto-pilot finding ourselves caught in unhealthy habit patterns. In our attempts to help ourselves\, we might watch too much news\, plan for every possible situation\, reach for our favorite comfort food or engage in other unhealthy behaviors\, unwittingly feeding our anxiety and making things worse. Fortunately\, mindfulness provides practices and skills that can help us change unhealthy habits and live in greater harmony with life. But how? The Buddha taught that disenchantment is key. In this evening session\, we will explore self-reflections to illuminate habit loops and explore how we can tap into the direct experience of disenchantment. The taste of disenchantment opens the space to let go\, without effort. We can develop the mind’s propensity to form habits to strengthen wholesome states and wise action and transform the roots of suffering. \nRecommended reading:  Judson Brewer\, MD\, PhD.\, The Craving Mind: From Cigarettes to Smartphones to Love – Why We Get Hooked and how We Can Break Bad Habits \nDana from this event will be offered to Southern Comfort Animal Rescue\, a small rescue in rural Georgia where there are no other resources for homeless dogs.\nSouthern Comfort Animal Rescue\, 1484 N. On Tuesdays\, we meet in Mountain View for our drop-in weekly program of meditation and teachings. Our Tuesday evening program usually includes a sitting meditation and Dhamma talk. The principal teacher is Shaila Catherine and guest speakers are featured regularly. Thematic series are periodically presented\, but whether or not a topic has been advertised in advance\, Shaila or a guest teacher will lead the sitting and offer teachings. On Thursdays\, we meet in Saratoga for our Dhamma Classroom\, for a series of structured courses with registration\, and periodic drop-in practice events.
