SUMMARY:Introduction to Insight Dialogue led by Bhikkhu Sukhacitto
DESCRIPTION:Awakening Together: Insight Dialogue Practice\nTonight will be a special extended event—a 2 hour workshop on Insight Dialog led by Bhikkhu Sukhacitto.\nThe meditation will begin at 7:15\, and the evening program will end around 9:15. Please try to attend the full program. \nEvening Schedule Overview (approximate times) \n\n7:15 Brief silent meditation and announcements\n7:30 Talk introducing Insight Dialogue practice\n7:45 Guided meditation on 6 guidelines of Insight Dialogue\n8:00 Insight Dialogue contemplation\n9:00 Sharing\n9:15 End evening program\n\nInsight Dialogue is an interpersonal meditation practice that brings together meditative awareness\, the wisdom teachings of the Buddha\, and the power of relationship. It has the same purposes and traditional roots as silent meditation: developing mindfulness\, compassion and liberating insight\, while investigating present moment experience.\n\nDuring this evening\, we will introduce the six guidelines of Insight Dialogue (Pause\, Relax\, Open\, Attune to Emergence\, Listen Deeply\, Speak the Truth) and explore the practice in small groups as a foundation of spiritual friendship in the whole of our lives.\nBhikkhu Sukhacitto is an Insight Dialogue Teacher. He was born in Germany in 1963 and first came into contact with Buddhism in 1986 in Thailand by attending a meditation retreat\, offered through Wat Suan Mokkh. He ordained there as a novice in 1989 and as a monk in 1990. He returned to the West in 1993. Since then he has lived at various monasteries\, including Dhammapala Monastery in Switzerland for six years and Amaravati Monastery in the UK for 4 years. On his first Insight Dialogue retreat in 2005\, he was amazed by the powerful experience of meditating together with other people and subsequently joined many more Insight Dialogue retreats. In 2010 he began his teacher training with Gregory Kramer and other teachers. In his experience\, interpersonal meditation is an extremely helpful aid for the development of wholesome qualities. It bridges the gap between traditional silent meditation and our everyday lives and relations with other people. Bhikkhu Sukhacitto sees Insight Dialogue as an important tool for liberation. In 2016 Bhikkhu Sukhacitto founded Kalyana Mitta Vihara\, or “House of Noble Friendship\,” where relational practice is part of the living. \n\nInsight Meditation South Bay offers two weekly meditation groups—Tuesdays evenings we offer an open drop-in sitting group in Mountain View\, and Thursdays we offer structured courses in Saratoga. \nThe Tuesday sitting group meets every Tuesday evening for a meditation and Dhamma talk in Mountain View. The principal teacher is Shaila Catherine and guest speakers are featured regularly. Thematic series are periodically presented\, but whether or not a topic has been advertised in advance\, Shaila or a guest teacher will lead the sitting and offer teachings. See also weekly sitting. \nNewcomers are always welcome. To help newcomers get acquainted with mindfulness meditation and IMSB\, a senior member or teacher offers a beginner’s orientation beginning at 6:30 on the first Tuesday of each month. \nIMSB relies upon the generosity of participants to support our teachers and cover organizational expenses. Dana is a word in the ancient Pali language that describes donations\, offerings and generosity. Two bowls will be available at an event to practice dana for the teacher and IMSB; we encourage you to give joyfully and generously\, according to your resources and means. IMSB is a 501(c) (3) organization. All donations are tax deductible as permitted by law.

SUMMARY:Overcoming Obstacles to Meditation
DESCRIPTION:A practical approach to working with five classic hindrances.\nA Six-week course led by Shaila Catherine and Sharon Allen \nOctober 25 – December 13\, 2018\n7:15 pm to 9:00 pm\nSilence begins at 7:00.\nArrive early (around 7:00) to enjoy the optional pre-class meditation period. \nMEDITATION PRACTICE cultivates inner peace\, clarity\, concentration\nand joy. However\, to experience these beautiful qualities we must overcome\nobstacles such as agitation\, dullness\, distraction\, obsessive thinking\, painful\nemotions\, and reactivity. Mastering these hindrances helps us work skillfully\nwith pain\, illness\, fear\, and a wide range of obstructive patterns.\nThis six-week course will include introductory mindfulness meditation\ninstruction and focus on practical strategies for identifying and working with\ncommon hindrances in meditation practice. We will nurture the skills that\nwill enable us to work with the hindrances and thereby transform negative\npatterns into positive states. \n\nOctober 25—Working with Obstacles as the Path with Sharon Allen\nNovember 1—Unseduced by the Desire for Pleasure with Shaila\nCatherine\nNovember 8—Overcoming Aversion\, Judgment and Anger with\nShaila Catherine\nNovember 15—Staying Awake in the Face of Dullness and Boredom\nwith Shaila Catherine\nNovember 22—No class tonight. Enjoy the Thanksgiving Holiday\nNovember 29—Calming the Restless and Distracted Mind with\nSharon Allen\nDecember 6 —Freedom from Doubt with Shaila Catherine\nDecember 13—Experiencing Mindfulness and Tranquility: A drop-in\nevening for meditation practice with Shaila Catherine\n\nWHO SHOULD JOIN: This course is open to all practitioners. \nCOURSE LEVELS: This is designed as a level 1-2 course. Click this link\nfor a key to course level designations . \nVisit our Teacher Page for teacher biographies and photographs. \nREGISTRATION: Registration is required for this course. Registration fees are non-refundable. To register\, select an option under the Tickets heading at the bottom of this page. (If you are viewing this page more than two months in advance of the course\, the Tickets heading might not yet appear\, so please check again later.) To register for a course\, you purchase one ticket\, which registers you for the entire class series. You only need to register once; you do not need to register separately for each class session. \nCourse Fee: The sliding scale fee range is from $360 to $90 and will be shared between IMSB and the teacher(s). The lower end of the sliding scale is intended for those with limited financial means. The low rate of $90 is estimated to cover the most basic costs such as rent and insurance for the specific class period. This base rate does not factor in compensation for teachers or ongoing administrative expenses for IMSB. If you pay at the mid to high range of the sliding scale\, your generosity supports those with limited income in attending our programs and also supports IMSB and the teachers\, enabling the dhamma to thrive in the South Bay area. We encourage you to choose the highest level that is appropriate for your economic situation. \nScholarship Assistance: A scholarship rate of $45 is offered for those with very limited financial means. If you need additional assistance and can volunteer to help\, please inquire with the registrar about service scholarships by contacting ThursdayClass. \nTax Deductions: The basic registration fee is not tax deductible. Donations above the base rate will be considered voluntary contributions and are deductible for any amount that is over the base rate. Each January\, the IMSB treasurer sends donors letters that acknowledge the amount given for the previous year that is above the basic rate; this serves as documentation for tax deduction purposes. \nCancellation Policy: All fees and payments are non-refundable. If it becomes necessary to cancel participation in a course\, and the registrar is notified prior to the start of the first class meeting\, your registration fee will be converted into a voucher creditable towards the fee for a future IMSB Thursday class. Vouchers must be used within one year of the initial course start date\, and may be transferred to only one future course. Cancellations that occur after the start of the first class are not eligible for the voucher credit.

SUMMARY:Monthly Day of Meditation with Shaila Catherine
DESCRIPTION:A day of meditation with Shaila Catherine. \nIMSB offers a day of meditation one Saturday each month. These monthly day long programs offer a consistent and easy opportunity for meditators to maintain a steady commitment to meditation\, deepen their practice\, explore various dhamma themes\, and cultivate relationships with the community—and still be home in time for dinner! \nThe day long programs are usually structured with alternating sitting and walking meditations\, augmented by meditation instructions\, reflections\, and teachings. Shaila Catherine leads most of the day longs\, complimented by periodic guest teachers or community events. At most day long events\, Shaila is available for individual consultations. \nShaila offers teachings at each event\, usually aimed at developing meditative skills. Whether or not a theme is announced in advance\, teachings will be offered to deepen understanding of the Buddhist path of practice. \nThere will be a pot-luck community meal around 12:30; please bring a food dish to share. \nEveryone is welcome. There is no registration. Folding chairs are provided. Bring a mat and cushion if you prefer to sit on the floor. Beginner’s to meditation are encouraged to come on time since both sitting and walking meditation instruction are usually offered in the mornings. \nThese monthly events may take place at any of the churches where we meet—in Los Altos\, Saratoga\, or Mountain View. Be sure to double check the website event listing to determine the correct location. \nIMSB relies upon the generosity of participants to support our teachers and cover organizational expenses. Dana is a word in the ancient Pali language that describes donations\, offerings and generosity.
