DESCRIPTION:Tonight’s meditation group meeting is cancelled for the holidays.\nOur regular weekly meditation program will resume next week. \n\nInsight Meditation South Bay offers two weekly meditation groups— a drop in sitting group Tuesdays in Mountain View\, and a series of classes Thursdays in Saratoga. \nThis group meets every Tuesday evening for a sitting and Dhamma talk in Mountain View. The principal teacher is Shaila Catherine and guest speakers are featured regularly. Thematic series are periodically presented\, but whether or not a topic has been advertised in advance\, Shaila or a guest teacher will lead the sitting and offer teachings. See also weekly sitting. \nNewcomers are always welcome. To help newcomers get acquainted with mindfulness meditation and IMSB\, a senior member or teacher offers a beginner’s orientation beginning at 6:30 on the first Tuesday of each month. \nIMSB relies upon the generosity of participants to support our teachers and cover organizational expenses. Dana is a word in the ancient Pali language that describes donations\, offerings and generosity. Two bowls will be available at an event to practice dana for the teacher and IMSB; we encourage you to give joyfully and generously\, according to your resources and means. IMSB is a 501(c) (3) organization. All donations are tax deductible as permitted by law.

DESCRIPTION:Energy\, Effort\, and Ease\nAn Insight Meditation retreat led by Shaila Catherine\nDecember 27\, 2018 to January 1\, 2019 \nThis insight retreat will emphasize skills for developing Right Effort to support mindfulness\, concentration\, and insight. By learning to use our energies wisely\, we can set down the burden of competitive striving\, infuse our activities with ease\, cultivate balanced beautiful qualities\, open to a fresh and free way of engaging with experience\, and incline the mind toward profound peace. \nThe factor of effort is included in many of the most important Buddhist Lists including the Noble Eight-fold Path\, the Seven Factors of Awakening\, The Five Faculties\, The Five Powers\, and the Four Bases of Success. Morning instructions on this retreat will explore effort as described in the Sammappadhāna Samyutta\, The Connected Discourses on Right Striving (SN 49.1). This brief teaching presents a flexible four-part approach to skillfully meeting situations\, in life and in formal meditation practice. \nThis retreat is appropriate for both new and experienced practitioners. It will include group meditation instructions\, dharma teachings\, and either group or individual consultations with the teacher. \nThis residential meditation retreat will be held at the Margaret Austin Center in Texas.
