SUMMARY:Young Meditators Group
DESCRIPTION:Young Meditators Group\nBringing Practice to Modern Daily Life \nFor Ages 18 to 39\nAnthony Maes will be our special guest leader for tonight. \nMeets the second Tuesday of most months just prior to the usual IMSB weekly meditation and teaching program. Check the Event Calendar to confirm the meeting schedule. \nWe’re building a community of young practitioners\, ages 18 to 39\, around interest in practice as a source of strength and refuge. Gatherings will be used to build sangha and explore pertinent topics of navigating daily life as a young person in the modern world. \nThis group is usually facilitated by Aishin Leonard\, a passionate Buddhist practitioner\, mindfulness facilitator and consultant in the South Bay. Anthony Maes will be our special guest leader for tonight. \nANTHONY “T” MAES has practiced Theravada Buddhist meditation since 2003\, including long retreats and practicing in a monastery in Thailand. “T” graduated from UC Berkeley in 2004\, then worked in psychology research on mindfulness at UCSF before shifting careers toward teaching and seeing clients one-on-one. Today he is a Dharma teacher at Spirit Rock and East Bay Meditation Center. He also teaches secular mindfulness retreats for teens and young adults at Inward Bound Mindfulness Education\, and a Relational Mindfulness retreat in Panama in the summer. He completed the 3-year Organic Intelligence practitioner training\, which informs his approach to trauma-sensitive mindfulness. He is currently part of the Community Dharma Leaders training at Spirit Rock. Find him at anthonymaes.com \nAll levels of practice welcome. No registration required. \nFOR MORE INFORMATION: meditateyoung

SUMMARY:Meditation and Teachings in Mountain View
DESCRIPTION:Due to the coronavirus concerns\, we have converted our Tuesday evening meeting to an online format. Insight Meditation South Bay offers two weekly meditation groups—Tuesdays evenings we offer an open drop-in sitting group in Mountain View\, and Thursdays we offer structured courses in Saratoga. The Tuesday sitting group meets every Tuesday evening for a meditation and Dhamma talk in Mountain View. The principal teacher is Shaila Catherine and guest speakers are featured regularly. Thematic series are periodically presented\, but whether or not a topic has been advertised in advance\, Shaila or a guest teacher will lead the sitting and offer teachings. See also weekly sitting. Newcomers are always welcome. To help newcomers get acquainted with mindfulness meditation and IMSB\, a senior member or teacher offers a beginner’s orientation beginning at 6:30 on the first Tuesday of each month. IMSB relies upon the generosity of participants to support our teachers and cover organizational expenses. Dana is a word in the ancient Pali language that describes donations\, offerings and generosity. Two bowls will be available at an event to practice dana for the teacher and IMSB; we encourage you to give joyfully and generously\, according to your resources and means. IMSB is a 501(c) (3) organization. All donations are tax deductible as permitted by law. \n

SUMMARY:Online Course: Satipatthana. Mindfulness for Experienced Meditators
DESCRIPTION:Due to the coronavirus concerns\, we have converted our Thursday evening Satipatthana Course into an online format starting March 19. \nREGISTRATION HAS CLOSED.  \nSatipatthana:\nMindfulness for Experienced Meditators\nAn ONLINE 8-week course led by Shaila Catherine and Sharon Allen \nA practical training leading to the final goal. \nThursdays\, March 5 – April 30\, 2020\n5:30 pm to 7:30 pm (PDT) \nTHE FOUR ESTABLISHMENTS OF MINDFULNESS (Satipatthana) offer practical methods for developing mindfulness of body\, feelings\, and mind. This 8-week course will explore each of the primary Satipatthana practices that are emphasized in early Buddhist sources. Our explorations will follow Bhikkhu Analayo’s book\, Satipatthana Meditation: A Practice Guide. Supported by recorded guided meditations by Bhikkhu Analayo\, and online discussions led by Shaila Catherine and Sharon Allen\, this class will help participants embody and explore this traditional path to liberation. \nSHAILA CATHERINE brings a unique perspective to Satipatthana practice. She has explored Satipatthana for decades\, and has co-taught four retreats with Bhikkhu Analayo since 2014. Her deep love of meditation\, extensive experience with mindfulness practices\, and familiarity with Analayo’s teachings will create a rare opportunity for experienced meditators to expand and deepen their mindfulness meditation practices. \n\nMarch 5: Chapters 1-2 Mindfulness and Satipatthana\, with Shaila Catherine\nMarch 12: Chapter 3 Meditations on Anatomy\, with Shaila Catherine\n\nDue to the coronavirus we have moved our course online beginning March 19. We will use a conference call platform called Uberconference. Uberconference provides reliable and easy audio conferencing that you can access via computer or phone. There is no need to download software or create accounts. More information will be provided in the confirmation materials after registering.  \n\nMarch 19: Chapter 4 Meditations on Elements\, with Shaila Catherine\nMarch 26: Chapter 5 Meditations on Death\, with Shaila Catherine\nApril 2: Catch Up Discussion for those who joined the online course. The discussion will include an introduction to Satipatthana and all three exercises related to Mindfulness of Body (Anatomy\, Elements\, and Death).\nApril 9: Chapter 6 Meditations on Feeling\, with Sharon Allen\nApril 16: Chapter 7 Meditations on Mind\, with Shaila Catherine\nApril 23: Chapter 8 Meditations on Hindrances\, with Shaila Catherine\nApril 30: Chapter 9 Meditations on Factors of Awakening\, with Shaila Catherine\n\nWHO SHOULD JOIN: This course is intended for experienced mindfulness meditation practitioners. \nCOURSE LEVELS: It is designed as a level 2-3 course. Click this link for a key to course level designations. \nREQUIRED BOOK: Satipatthana Meditation: A Practice Guide\, By Bhikkhu Analayo\, published by Windhorse Publications. ISBN 978-1-911407-10-2 \n\nVisit our Teacher Page for teacher biographies and photographs. \nREGISTRATION: Registration is required for this course. Registration fees are non-refundable. To register\, select an option under the Tickets heading at the bottom of this page. (If you are viewing this page more than two months in advance of the course\, the Tickets heading might not yet appear\, so please check again later.) To register for a course\, you purchase one ticket\, which registers you for the entire class series. You only need to register once; you do not need to register separately for each class session. \nCourse Fee: The sliding scale fee range is from $440 to $150 and will be shared between IMSB and the teacher(s). The lower end of the sliding scale is intended for those with limited financial means. The low rate of $150 is estimated to cover the most basic costs such as rent and insurance for the specific class period. This base rate does not factor in compensation for teachers or ongoing administrative expenses for IMSB. If you pay at the mid to high range of the sliding scale\, your generosity supports those with limited income in attending our programs and also supports IMSB and the teachers\, enabling the dhamma to thrive in the South Bay area. We encourage you to choose the highest level that is appropriate for your economic situation. \nScholarship Assistance: A scholarship rate of $65 is offered for those with very limited financial means. If you need additional assistance\, or if you would like to volunteer to help out\, please inquire with the registrar by contacting ThursdayClass. \nTax Deductions: The basic registration fee is not tax deductible. Donations above the base rate will be considered voluntary contributions and are deductible for any amount that is over the base rate. Each January\, the IMSB treasurer sends donors letters that acknowledge the amount given for the previous year that is above the basic rate; this serves as documentation for tax deduction purposes. \nCancellation Policy: All fees and payments are non-refundable. If it becomes necessary to cancel participation in a course\, and the registrar is notified prior to the start of the first class meeting\, your registration fee will be converted into a voucher creditable towards the fee for a future IMSB Thursday class. Vouchers must be used within one year of the initial course start date\, and may be transferred to only one future course. Cancellations that occur after the start of the first class are not eligible for the voucher credit.
