SUMMARY:Beyond Distraction: 10-night Retreat in Georgia
DESCRIPTION:Participants in this retreat must be vaccinated to prevent COVID-19. We have held retreats at this center in 2020 and 2021. We consider this site to be well designed for seclusion\, and the staff diligent in their efforts to lower the risk of infection. Please review the preventative measures taken by the center\, and read our guidelines: Guidelines for Retreat Practice in the Covid-19 Era \nBeyond Distraction: Five Ways to Focus the Mind\nled by Shaila Catherine\nMonday\, August 29\, 2022 – Thursday\, September 8\, 2022 \nThe retreat begins with registration from 2:30 – 4:00 pm on Monday\, August 29. The retreat ends after lunch at 1:00 pm on Thursday\, September 8. \nPartial attendance is possible in some cases\, but it must begin on the first day of the retreat and priority will be given to those registering for the full retreat. A limited number of commuter spaces may be available. \nMental restlessness is an insidious and pervasive hindrance that most practitioners struggle to overcome. We can refine our skills for working with the modes of thinking that distract us from being mindful: critical thoughts\, planning\, worrying\, lustful thoughts\, judging\, memories\, internal commentaries\, to name a few. The teachings on this retreat will present a sequence of strategies for dealing with obstructive mental patterns; these progressive instructions are found in two discourses in the Middle Length Discourses (suttas 19 and 20). Practitioners will be encouraged to develop a mindfulness-based meditation practice\, while exploring these strategies. The practice can free the mind from habitual distractions\, nurture calm\, concentration\, and jhana\, and incline toward a liberating understanding of emptiness.\n\nThis retreat is suitable for practitioners of any level\, providing you have attended at least one prior silent residential retreat.\n\nPreparation: Please read the following two discourses prior to the retreat. You may wish to bring a print out to the retreat for your personal reference.\n\nhttps://suttacentral.net/mn19/en/bodhi\nhttps://suttacentral.net/mn20/en/bodhi\n\nDaily group instructions will explore a multitude of ways to work with thoughts. Group and one-to-one guidance will tailor the practices to meet the needs and interests of individual students.\nThis silent retreat is structured with alternating periods of sitting and walking meditation\, dhamma teachings\, and teacher consultations. It will provide an ideal occasion for nurturing serenity and calmness\, removing distracting thoughts\, and inclining the mind toward a liberating realization of emptiness. This retreat is intended for meditators who already have an established mindfulness based practice\, and have previously attended at least one multi-day silent residential retreat. Students will be expected to practice a mindfulness-based approach to meditation practice.\n\nRegister early! Space is limited.  \nABOUT THE SITE: Situated in a quiet rural area just outside of Atlanta\, the Ingnatius House\, a Jesuit retreat center offers convenience and comfort to support deep meditative experience. \nTO REGISTER: Please use the online form at the link below to submit your registration and waiver forms. \nLink to registration form: IH 2022 Registration Form \nThis form will take approximately 20 minutes to fill out. You have the option of paying the non-refundable deposit of $250 or the full retreat payment either by mailing a check to the registrar or by making a Zelle bank transfer. The address and account information for making this payment will be included in the registration confirmation email. \nIf we must cancel the retreat for any reason (such as if we are under shelter-in-place orders at the time of the retreat)\, we will return your deposit and fees\, however\, the $250 deposit remains non-refundable if you cancel your reservation. Details of our cancellation policy are on the registration form. \nREQUIREMENTS: This 10-night retreat is designed for experienced students. Previous retreat experience in the insight meditation tradition is required\, with a minimum of at least one week-long silent residential retreat. If you have less than one week-long silent retreat experience\, your attendance requires approval from the teacher. \nACCOMMODATIONS AND MEALS: Ignatius House has been described as a hidden jewel in the Atlanta area. The estimated actual per-person cost for this retreat (if we used a fixed rate) is $2300. By selecting an amount above $2300\, your generosity supports those who need to select a lower rate to attend the retreat. SUMMARY:Concentration\, Metta and Jhana Factors: 10-night Retreat in Georgia
DESCRIPTION:NOTE. New requirement added May 14\, 2021: Vaccination against COVID-19 is required to attend this retreat. \nThis will be a very special retreat—a rare opportunity to practice with seclusion and intimacy. We will  limit attendance\, wear masks indoors\, practice social distancing\, have daily temperature checks and self-scheduled practice periods\, and thoroughly disinfect the property with daily disinfectant fogging. We believe the site of Ignatius House offers a responsible place for a small group retreat. There are private rooms with ensuite private baths\, outdoor seating along the river\, and a diligent staff. Even with our precautions\, any gathering will involve some degree of risk\, so we leave it to your good judgement to determine if this opportunity is appropriate for you.\nPlease review the preventative measures taken by the center\, our new guidelines for reducing the spread of the coronavirus\, and comments from students who attended a previous retreat in Georgia in September 2020.\n\nIH2021_Information-and-Guidelines-About-Covid-Precautions\nCOVID_Participant Quotes\n\n  \nCultivating Concentration\, Mettā\, and the Jhana Factors\na 10-day retreat led by Shaila Catherine\nMonday\, June 28\, 2021 – Thursday\, July 8\, 2021. \nThe retreat begins with registration from 2:30 – 4:30 pm on Monday\, June 28. The retreat ends with lunch on Thursday\, July 8. \nPartial attendance is possible in some cases\, but it must begin on the first day of the retreat and priority will be given to those registering for the full retreat. A limited number of commuter spaces may be available. To facilitate travel arrangements\, early arrivals on the prior day\, Sunday\, June 27 can be arranged with an additional fee. \nThis ten-day residential retreat will provide instructions in loving-kindness (metta) to cultivate concentration. The instructions will emphasize developing five factors that intensify focused attention and characterize the blissful states of meditative absorption known as jhana. The five factors are applied attention\, sustained attention\, joy\, happiness\, and one-pointedness of mind. Although these are called the Five Jhana Factors\, they are not exclusive to jhana states. The teachings on this retreat will provide practical instructions for developing and balancing these factors; distinguishing between the jhana factors and the states of jhana absorption; and examining the powerful role that concentration plays on the path of awakening. \nDaily group instructions will emphasize loving-kindness (metta)\, however\, students are welcome to practice mindfulness with breathing or satipatthana practices if they prefer. Group and one-to-one guidance will tailor the practices to meet the needs and interests of individual students. \nThis silent retreat is structured with alternating periods of sitting and walking meditation\, dhamma teachings\, and teacher consultations. It will provide an ideal occasion for nurturing serenity and calmness\, and introducing the basics of jhana practice. No previous jhana experience is required\, however\, this retreat is intended for meditators who already have an established mindfulness based practice\, and have previously attended at least one multi-day silent residential retreat. \nPrior to the retreat\, please read the first 11 chapters of Focused and Fearless by Shaila Catherine. \nREQUIREMENTS: The 10-night retreat is designed for experienced students who are fully vaccinated. SUMMARY:Concentration\, Jhana\, and Breath: 10-night Retreat in Georgia
DESCRIPTION:This retreat is open for registration. We currently have 17 participants registered\, and can accept up to 4 more participants. This will be a very special retreat—a rare opportunity to practice with seclusion and intimacy. Please review the preventative measures taken by the center\, and read our new guidelines: Guidelines for Retreat Practice in the Covid-19 Era \nTeachings on Sixteen Steps of Anapanasati Samadhi\nled by Shaila Catherine\nMonday\, August 31\, 2020 – Thursday\, September 10\, 2020. \nThe retreat begins with registration from 2:00 – 3:30 pm on Monday\, August 31. The retreat ends after lunch at 1:00 pm on Thursday\, September 10. \nPartial attendance is possible in some cases\, but it must begin on the first day of the retreat and priority will be given to those registering for the full retreat. A limited number of commuter spaces may be available. \nThis retreat will utilize the breath as the primary meditation object and will encourage the development of meditative skills that lead to deep concentration (samadhi) and insight (vipassana). Daily group instructions will focus on the sixteen steps in the Anapanasati Sutta as a route to jhana and/or liberating insight. Meetings with the teacher in small groups and one-on-one dialogs will tailor the practices to meet the needs and interests of individual students. Some students may choose to emphasize concentration practice throughout the retreat; others may emphasize vipassana; and some may practice both concentration and insight inconjunction with mindfulness of breathing. \nThis retreat offers a special opportunity to train in concentration and jhana practices with personal guidance from Shaila Catherine. It is one of the very few retreats each year in which Shaila systematically guides students to establish jhana by working step by step with the Anapanasati Sutta. Students who wish to embark on this training in concentration and jhana should read her book Focused and Fearless prior to the retreat. See our Concentration and Jhana FAQ page for more information about developing concentration and the absorption states of jhana. \nThis silent retreat is structured with alternating periods of sitting and walking meditation\, dhamma teachings\, and teacher consultations. \nPrior to the retreat\, please read Focused and Fearless by Shaila Catherine\, and the Anapanasati Sutta. You may download the sutta at: https://suttacentral.net/mn118/en/bodhi \nRegister early! Space is limited. We keep this retreat small (previously under 40 participants) to enable in-depth guidance from Shaila. Update 5/29/20: As a precaution to limit the spread of the coronavirus\, the retreat will be significantly smaller than the 40 that we originally planned. Currently attendance is restricted to 22 guests\, although this number might change slightly by Aug 31. See the Guidelines for Retreat Practice in the Covid-19 Era document for more information.  \nABOUT THE SITE: Situated in a quiet rural area just outside of Atlanta\, the Ingnatius House\, a Jesuit retreat center offers convenience and comfort to support deep meditative experience. \nTO REGISTER: Download and complete the IH2020 registration and waiver forms\, enclose a non-refundable deposit of $250 (payable to Bodhi Retreats)\, and return via email and/or postal mail to the address below. We are not currently accepting credit card transactions\, so please send your registration deposit and fees via check or money order made payable to Bodhi Retreats.
