Liberating Mind and Heart: A weeklong retreat on Cultivating Loving-Kindness, Compassion, Joy, and Equanimity

with Shaila Catherine

Monday, September 17, 2018 – Sunday September 23, 2018.
Partial attendance can be arranged for the first 3 or 4 nights.

DON’T WAIT! Registration closes August 31.

LOVING KINDNESS is a profound quality of friendliness toward all of life. Compassion is a deep commitment to non-harming. Joy highlights the blessings. Equanimity sees the truth with a balanced mind. This ancient practice called Brahma Vihara practice cultivates a heartful wish that all beings be well. It uproots tendencies toward ill will, harming, competitive discontent, and craving. It is a practice of happiness that heals the heart, meets the pains of life with sensitivity, and strengthens the inner serenity that is essential for concentration. The Brahma Viharas can lead to the absorption states of jhana, and to what the ancient Buddhist texts describe as a vast, exhaulted, and “immeasurable liberation of the mind.”

This retreat will include instruction, guided meditations, and teachings on cultivating these qualities of friendliness, compassion, joy, and equanimity. There will be alternating periods of sitting and walking meditation, dhamma teachings, question and answer sessions, self-scheduled practice periods, and teacher consultations.

This retreat will be held at Redwood Glen, a lovely retreat center nestled in a redwood forest between La Honda and Pescadero. It’s about a 15-minutes drive from Pescadero State Beach, and about a 1-hour drive from either the San Francisco Airport or the San Jose airport.

The retreat begins with registration at 2:00 pm on September 17; it ends at 11:30 am on September 23. Participants who are traveling from afar might need to check flight times carefully, and if necessary arrange to stay in a hotel the night before the retreat. Early-arrival accommodations are not available at the retreat center.

Register early! Space is limited.
